Talk:5e Race Variants
I don't understand. There are plenty of variants for all kinds of content all across this wiki. Why is there a special distinction here for official 5e races? It doesn't seem to be consistent, or consistently used, even... - Guy (talk) 20:06, 3 December 2017 (MST)
- I would like to see a separate category for all variants of core content. I simply haven't gone to the trouble of rooting them all out and recategorizing. It'd be easier to just stop separating racial variants, but less helpful to our users. One of the major complaints levied against us by members of other communities, (including ENWorld, GiantITP forums, multiple subreddits, the other wiki, multiple Facebook groups, youtube, RPG stack exchange, RPG.net forums, the gaming den, DMs Guild commentors, and D&D Beyond forums) is that we allow variant content to parade about without very clearly distinguishing it as a variant rather than an online transcription of the original source material. That isn't as bad now that we have the homebrew/official banners, but apparently it's still an issue for some kids. I don't think we can be held responsible for the complete willful ignorance of another person, but I do feel that being able to click a button and get all variants of core content in a given category would be useful. --Kydo (talk) 09:21, 5 December 2017 (MST)
Homebrew Question[edit]
This is more of a question pertaining to variants of homebrew races. Say, hypothetically, I wanted to make a homebrew race for the wiki, but there are already several homebrew races on the wiki using all the varying names I can think to use for my race. If my race is of similar concept to one of these races, but fundamentally different enough, is it still okay to make this race as a variant of one of the preexisting races? - Alice-chan (talk) 11:06, 22 November 2018 (MST)
- The standard practice has usually been to use the "[name], Variant (identifier)" title. For example, Dullahan, Variant (5e Race). — Geodude (talk | contribs | email) . . 11:21, 22 November 2018 (MST)
- I'm aware of that, but I just wanted to confirm if there was anything wrong with calling it a variant for nothing more than the express purpose of using the already-taken race name. Maybe it was a silly question, but I asked anyway. - Alice-chan (talk) 11:37, 22 November 2018 (MST)
Missing Pages[edit]
I've noticed that there are pages that aren't appearing on this page despite meeting the criteria. For example, the Aarakocra has four race variants that should turn up but instead only two have. The dpl below displays all race variants without MT's so you can see the other two Aarakocra pages. Does anyone know what the issue is?

- It seems like the dpl did not like the optional categories order.
- I think a few of them are missing a race category. We should have a dpl on this page to list pages without any of the listed race categories. --Green Dragon (talk) 23:30, 5 March 2019 (MST)
- Thanks and I agree. I've added the dpl and cleaned up the page. I plan to go through all the pages and make sure they have the right categories. —ConcealedLight (talk) 04:08, 6 March 2019 (MST)
