Tiefling, Variant[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Tieflings are humanoid creatures that resemble normal humans in just about every way except for three: tieflings have horns, tails, and their skin is typically a flat singular color. Some tieflings will have other exceptions as well, like sharp teeth, extra fingers, hooved feet, monochromatic eyes, or large wings. Almost every tieflings' horns are different from another tieflings; a fact often exemplified by the decoration or styling of ones horns. Tieflings horns also grow with age, with the oldest of all tieflings having the most extravagant horns of all.

History[edit]

There are two ways in which tieflings are brought into existence. The most simplistic one is the most normal; a humanoid creature and a tiefling naturally conceive a child which may end up being a tiefling, or may end up possessing a few tiefling traits. But the first tieflings were born out of an ancient pact with Satan herself. The finer details of this pact are lost to time, but it is at least known that, through this pact, Infernal blood was somehow infused into the human bloodline. The first tieflings were humans who partook in this pact and became tieflings.

Society[edit]

Tiefling societies don't often exist, at least in the normal corners of the world. Tieflings societies can typically be found across the planes, but most commonly in the circles of Hell itself. The exact political structure of Hell remains mostly a mystery, and is often subject to intense scholarly debate; especially around those that research the Archdevils themselves.

Tiefling Names[edit]

Tiefling names typically fall into two main categories. Tieflings will either take names derivative of the Infernal language, or they will adopt a name that is representative of a concept. Those that take these concept-names, called virtue names, will sometimes attempt to embody the name they’ve chosen. For some, it is a noble quest, and for others a grim destiny.

Tiefling Traits[edit]

Devil-like creatures created through the unholy matrimony of humans and devils of ages long past
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2
Age. Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.
Alignment. Most tieflings value the self and freedom to do as they wish, so many tend towards the chaotic alignments. Tieflings can be other alignments however; it is not common, but not exceptionally rare either.
Size. Tieflings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Hellish Resistance. You are resistant to fire damage.
Boiling Blood. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell once as a 2nd-level spell. You must finish a short rest to cast this spell again with this trait. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spells.
(Optional) Appearance. It is not uncommon for tieflings to possess strange physical traits. Choose 1d4+1 of the following features; a second set of smaller horns in addition to your set of regular horns, fangs or sharp teeth, a forked tongue, catlike eyes, six fingered hands, goat-like legs, cloven hooves, a forked tail, leathery or scaly skin, a lack of shadow or reflection, or a constant scent of brimstone.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Infernal

Bloodlines. Instead of subraces, tieflings may choose from a variety of bloodlines that discern how your Infernal heritage ties to various powerful figures of the Nine Hells.

Bloodline of Asmodeus[edit]

You draw your lineage from Asmodeus, the archdevil of Lust. Tieflings with the bloodline of Asmodeus, or luxuria tieflings, are typically immensely attractive or, at the least, capable of being immensely attractive. This is both a blessing and a curse, as you can get whatever you want with a little flourish of charm, but you attract attention like metal to a magnet.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1
Heredity of the Courtesan. You gain proficiency in the Persuasion skill. Whenever you are the target of an attack roll, you can expend your reaction to cause the creature targeting you to make a Insight check. This Insight check is contested against a Persuasion check that you make. If you succeed this contest, the creatures attack misses you. You can use this ability an amount of times equal to your proficiency bonus, after which you must complete a long rest to do so again.
Legacy of Lust. You know the friends cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the charm person spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the suggestion spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Beelzebub[edit]

Your lineage is taken from Beelzebub, the archdevil of Gluttony. Contrary to common belief, Beelzebub is not monstrously obese; in fact, he’s doing quite well these days. That fact is also apparent in gula tieflings, who possess the strength required to wrangle Infernal cattle and the impressive stomach acid to digest them too.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 1
Heredity of the Gourmand. You become proficient with cook's utensils. When making a melee attack against a creature, you may choose to attack the creature with your cook’s utensils. If the attack succeeds, you gain an amount of hit points equal to the damage dealt against the creature. Your cook’s utensils deal an amount of damage equivalent to a dagger. You can use this feature once, after which you must complete a long rest to do so again.
Legacy of Gluttony. You know the create bonfire cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the absorb elements spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the dragon's breath spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Mammon[edit]

Your heritage can be traced back to Mammon, the archdevil of Greed. Mammon, in addition to being Hell’s greedy little coin-keeper, is also quite considerably intelligent. Tremendously intelligent, by today’s standards actually. This clearly made its way into avaritia tieflings as well; tieflings so smart they can keep even the most ramshackle of firearms from exploding at least once.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1
Heredity of the Machine. You become proficient with tinker’s tools and firearms. When a weapon you are proficient with misfires, you can use your reaction to reroll the attack roll, potentially causing it to not misfire. Rerolling in this instance does not change if the attack roll successfully hits or not, it may only save the weapon from misfiring. You can perform this feature an amount of times equal to your proficiency bonus before you must complete a long rest to do so again.
Legacy of Greed. You know the mending cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the distort value spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the jim's glowing coin spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Belphegor[edit]

Belphegor, the archdevil of Sloth, stands at the end of your family tree. Most consider the archdevil of Sloth to be a slow, lazy creature, but most would be wrong. It takes a considerable willpower and constitution to bear the ineffable cold of the Sloth layer, and that same power is evident in tristitia tieflings.

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1
Heredity of the Frozen. You are resistant to cold damage.
Legacy of Sloth. When you take a short rest, you may choose one thing from the following: hit points and hit dice, class features, or spell slots. You regain the thing you chose as if your short rest had been a long rest. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Bloodline of Satan[edit]

Any ira tiefling is distinguishable with nary a thought. Their boiling blood and flawless combat prowess are clear signs of the lineage of Satan, the archdevil of Wrath and the sovereign of Hell. While ira tieflings do not possess his ability to inspire and rouse the limitless legions of Hell, they are granted a fraction of his strength.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2
Heredity of the Warrior. Choose a specific melee or ranged weapon, such as a crossbow or longsword. Your proficiency bonus doubles on attack and damage rolls made with the chosen weapon.
Legacy of Wrath. You know the sword burst cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the burning hands spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the flame blade spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Leviathan[edit]

Wandering eyes, shady figures, and thievings of the century are the telltale sign of a invidia tiefling. Leviathan, the archdevil of Envy, is a strange Infernal figurehead. Little is known of both him and his layer, except for his various exploits in which the unstealable is stolen. The same can be said for tieflings who share their lineage with him; little is known, except they steal exceptionally.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1
Heredity of the Coveter. When a creature that you can see and that is within 60 feet of you uses an ability that isn't unique to the creature's biology (like a dragons breath weapon or a beholder's antimagic cone), a legendary or lair action, or is a feature, spell, or ability that you already know you can expend your reaction to use that same ability. This mimicry of the initial ability deals half the damage of the real ability and uses your Charisma as the spellcasting ability if it is a spell. You can use this trait once, after which you must finish a long rest in order to do so again.
Legacy of Envy. You know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the ray of sickness spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Lucifer[edit]

Superia tieflings, the tieflings of Lucifer speak with a grand persuasion and even grander performance. They have inherited the archdevil of Pride’s innate ability to lie without hindrance, and they use it well; likely much to the Deceivers enjoyment.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1
Heredity of the Deceiver. You gain expertise in the Deception skill. The proficiency bonus of the first Deception check you make against any creature is doubled. You can use this trait an amount of times equal to your proficiency bonus, after which you must complete a short rest to do so again.
Legacy of Pride. You know the thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the disguise self spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the detect thoughts spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bloodline of Abaddon[edit]

Exitium tieflings are often confused with ira tieflings, for their boiling blood and similar physical features are enough to convince any that they are of Satan’s blood, that is until the exitium shows itself in combat. Ira tieflings are devastating and calculating, using a mixture of intelligence and brute strength to cleave their foes, while exitium tieflings use chaos and furied attacks to strike fear into the hearts of those not yet torn to pieces.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2
Heredity of the Destroyer. If you deal damage to a creature equal to one fourth of the creature's hit point maximum, or if you critically hit a creature, that creature is frightened of you for 1 minute. If the creature is resistant to the frightened condition, they may make a Wisdom saving throw in order to resist this effect. If the creature is immune to the frightened condition, they may make a Wisdom saving throw with advantage in order to resist this effect. Additionally, when you take the attack action against a creature that is frightened of you, you can make one additional attack as part of that attack.
Legacy of Ruin. You know the vicious mockery cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the cause fear spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the flaming sphere spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
