Tetrachromat Dragonborn (5e Race Variant)
Tetrachromat Dragonborn[edit]
“ | We couldn't believe our eyes. After years of crossbreeding and magically fusing different types of humanoid dragons, an egg was finally birthed. When it hatched, it was breathtaking—displaying every possible color known to existence, yet at times appearing colorless or showing hues beyond our comprehension. Experiment D-57278… no, it deserves a proper name for its race, and for him as an individual.
Five years after hatching, it began to breathe beams. None of the humanoid dragons we managed to create could do this, and it seemed to have no control over the ability. I am naming it the Tetrachromat Dragonborn. Sixteen years after its hatching, it… changed sex? I’m not sure how this is possible, but it can alter its sexual organs overnight. We had no idea this was even possible. I wonder if it is capable of asexual reproduction. Eighteen years after its hatching, we decided to observe what would happen if it experienced love and "married" a partner. Unbeknownst to me, its partner was part of another project. On the day of their supposed union, it witnessed its partner's death. The dragon reacted almost human, collapsing to its knees and crying for hours until it passed out from grief. This is Alexander Zenith. It has been just 10 days since the death of its partner. This is a warning to anyone who finds this: DO NOT INTERACT WITH THIS THING. T-This was a mistake. Mortals should never attempt to break the laws of nature. We've lost countless men. I must escape before he finds me. |

Physical Description[edit]
Similar to the dragonborn from which they were bred, Tetrachromat Dragonborn are humanoid in form, roughly the same size as typical dragonborn. They have sleek faces, beautiful wings, long tails, and horns that resemble a crown. When it asexually laid five eggs for the first time, all hatched into offspring nearly identical to their parent. The only physical differences were in their skin patterns: males had rougher skin, while females had smoother, softer skin.
When reproducing with others, females almost always laid eggs that hatched into more Tetrachromat Dragonborn. Rare live births resulted in offspring of the other parent's race, but with random color splotches on their bodies. Males fathering children with non-dragonoid creatures produced offspring of that species but with the father's coloration. When mating with dragonoid creatures, they produced eggs similar to Tetrachromat Dragonborn eggs, though the hatchlings lacked the full capabilities of a true Tetrachromat Dragonborn.
History[edit]
Before the first Tetrachromat Dragonborn was laid and hatched, there were roughly 70 years of kidnappings and crossbreeding different humanoid dragons in an effort to create a dragon of every race and color, even using real dragon sperm. Many lives were lost, but the resulting creation was perfection.
When the Tetrachromat Dragonborn hatched, it had wings and a tail—unlike most of the species of dragons used. Later in life, it began to shoot beams from its mouth. We initially thought this was a new form of dragon breath, and indeed, the beams turned out to be just that, much to the scientists' delight.
Eighteen years later, it escaped the facility with three other experiments, now its friends. They went their separate ways for the next 30 years. During this time, the Tetrachromat Dragonborn learned to use magic in unprecedented ways and successfully reproduced asexually, laying and hatching eggs.
Society[edit]
Tetrachromat Dragonborn strive to avoid killing sentient beings unless absolutely necessary. They established a village on the same hill where the first naturally born Tetrachromat Dragonborn was laid. It is a custom for every Tetrachromat Dragonborn to lay their eggs in this village, ensuring the safety of their young and preventing them from becoming subjects of experimentation like the First.
Once a year, all Tetrachromat Dragonborn return to this village to celebrate a festival commemorating the First's escape from the laboratory.
