Geography (Shinobi World Supplement)
A Unified World, Divided[edit]
The Shinobi world consists of a single supercontinent with a spattering of islands along its coasts, the greatest consistency and size of which are just out from its southeastern shore. Amidst this land lies numerous “lands”, or countries that claim an element of chakra their own. Each land is lead by a Daimyō, or feudal lord, but leaves all military matters to the head of its respective hidden village, towns specifically founded to raise and train soldiers, and are typically hidden as their name implies. The nations are only held from war by each others' strength, and while treaties have been signed, they rarely hold more value than the paper they're written on. Among the nations, five stand as the greatest in military might. Dubbed the Five Great Shinobi Nations, they include the lands of Fire, Lightning, Water, Wind, and Earth.
Nations[edit]
Land of Fire[edit]
The Land of Fire is the centermost nation in the Shinobi World and is covered in lush forests and warm weather. It was the first to adopt a ninja village, the Hidden Leaf Village, which is lead by the Hokage and founded by the Senju and Uchiha clans. Being surrounded by three of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, it has been engulfed in every Shinobi World War. The Land of Fire lives by the Will of Fire: an ideology centering on love as the key to peace started by Asura Otsutsuki.
Hidden Leaf Village[edit]
Lead by the Hokage, the Hidden Leaf Village has a cliff bearing stone images of the Hokages' faces to its back and a massive circular wall surrounding it. Most of its buildings are simple one- or two-story wooden constructs, often with paper walls in house interiors, though larger, more important buildings are typically concrete. It was founded and constructed by the Senju and Uchiha clans, but has since become home to many others, the most powerful physically and politically among them including the Hyuga and Sarutobi clans. It has withstood many catastrophes, including being completely destroyed by the Nine-Tails during the Fourth Hokage's era and Pain during the Fifth's, and the destruction of the Uchiha clan during the Third's second term.
Akagahara[edit]
In a large clearing along the Bay of Fire sits a stone outcropping. Long ago, in the earliest days of the Hidden Leaf Village, Chunin Exams were held here, with it eventually gaining a reputation as the single best place to train in the Land of Fire, though few made the journey. This reputation in turn became a legend that whoever overcame its challenges would fulfill their dream. When the ninja monk statue at its center is removed, a squad of autonomous puppets springs forth. If they can not be defeated, the only way to stop them is to return the statue to its place.
Fire Temple[edit]
High within the mountains near the Land of Rivers, the Fire Temple is a monastery for ninja monks. In the past, it has been lead by Chukaku, and later Chiriku, two of the most renown ninja monks in history, together rivaling the Sage of Six Paths in their contributions to chakra spiritualism. Its iron, fuinjutsu-enhanced walls are said to be unbreakable, though Sora's full power was able to open its gates. Years later, they were breached again by Hidan and Kakuzu, where the monks present were slaughtered for their bounties before the monastery itself was leveled, after which only four monks remained.
Forest of Death[edit]
Just outside of the Hidden Leaf Village, the No-Hunting District is a small, caged plot of land officially owned by the Hokage that serves as a training ground for combat and survival. Most plants and animals within its gates are giant, poisonous, venomous, or any combination of the above. It has been used as the forum for Chunin Exams many times in the past, typically revolving around reaching the tower at its center. Its official designation is the Forty-Fourth Training Ground.
Mount Jofuku[edit]
While its peak is within the Land of Fire, the slope of Mount Jofuku forms one of the many glens and dales of the Land of Valleys. Along its slopes lies Jofuku Forest, the "Lost Forest", a supposedly haunted woods home to the Jofuku flower. These seven-colored flowers have many medicinal properties, being equivalent to a blood increasing pill and chakra pill and curing effects that can be cured by greater restoration, but when they are picked, their pollen creates a potentially lethal genjutsu within the picker's mind that summons the image of their greatest enemy. The wounds this illusion cause affect their real body, but they only have abilities the target knows they have. It is thought that these flowers are the source of the Kurama clan's Kekkei Genkai.
Nikko Inn Town[edit]
A small civilian village, Nikko Inn is primarily a half-way stop for ninja on their way to or from the Hidden Leaf Village taking part in operations to the west, primarily due to the Land of Fire's historic conflicts with the Lands of Wind, Earth, Rivers, and Rain.
No-Hunting District[edit]
Just outside of the Hidden Leaf Village, the No-Hunting District is a small, caged plot of land officially owned by the Hokage that serves as a wildlife preserve for rare animals. It has been used as a training ground in the past, typically for tracking and search-and-rescue skill refinement, but was originally designated to be used in Chunin Exams. As it has been discontinued as a village-wide training area, it has been dubbed the "Zeroth Training Ground".
Ryuchi Cave[edit]
One of the Three Great Unexplored Sage Regions, Ryuchi Cave lies high in the north of the Land of Fire, only being accessible through a single entrance in the side of a hill, its ancient ornate doorways covered in moss and age. It is protected by a subtle genjutsu that, while not as strong of a deterrent as the winding path to Mount Myoboku, ensures that only those actively seeking it can find the entrance. Within, the three handmaidens ensure that only those willing to sacrifice everything for power ever see the White Snake Sage; those that do not are devoured.
Ryutan City[edit]
For much of its history, Ryutan Town was a small weapons manufacturing town, with its citizens making a living at its large forge complexes. However, with the dawn of Scientific Ninja Tools after the Fourth Shinobi World War, it became the premier SNT manufacturer in the Land of Fire, if not in the world, mainly due to being the home of the Advanced Technology Research Institute. While the institute's main facility is vast and spacious, its underground portions dwarf it.
Tanzaku Town[edit]
The furthest town from the Hidden Leaf Village in the Land of Fire, Tanzaku is a place of excess. Many come to the town on vacation, particularly during their many festivals. Generally, there are four kinds of people that make their homes in Tanzaku Town: the limited royalty of Tanzaku Castle, those who made it rich gambling, those who run the various halls and hotels of the town, and those who have lost everything to its gilded smiles.
Tonika Village[edit]
In the middle of a barren, stony wasteland along the border of the Land of Fire and Land of Lightning sits a perfectly-circular indent; the Hole. Lush and vibrant, it is an oasis of life, and at its center is Tonika Village. Many cultures believe the Hole to be sacred, with Tonika bearing the duty to defend its many treasures and secrets. The most powerful and hidden of these secrets is the Ama no Hoko; the Spear of Heaven, a hidden tower that amplifies the sound-based energy of the Saezuri. While the tower was destroyed after Naruto and his clone, the Hole continued to flourish.
Valley of Judgement[edit]
Along the forested plains of the Land of Fire lies a deep, misty crack in the earth. Within the mist, which counts as heavily obscured for any creatures without the Path of the Assassin, lies an extremely valuable medicinal plant, eyebright, along with a dangerous guardian: the Valley Judges. The blind guardians' numbers make it a dangerous place, even for experienced jonin.
Valley of the End[edit]
Long ago, after unearthing forbidden knowledge, Madara Uchiha turned his back on the Hidden Leaf Village, believing that the future of peace among shinobi lied in destruction, not unification. Controlling the Nine-Tails, he challenged Hashirama Senju to one final duel. Starting near the edge of the village they had created, their fight took them to the border of the Land of Fire and the Land of Sound, where their final attacks dug out a massive valley, through which a great river now runs. Shortly after the battle, two statues were constructed along the mouth of the valley's waterfall of the two combatants that stood until the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Land of Lightning[edit]
Located in the peninsula to the northeast of the Land of Fire, the Land of Lightning is a generally mountainous region. At its center lies the largest mountain range in the Shinobi World, upon which brews a constant lightning storm, while at its bases run various rivers. While the glaciers to the north are a constant topic within the war room, it is largely agreed that even another great nation would be easier to invade than the icy north. The Land of Lightning lives by the Will of the Lightning: an ideology centering on decisiveness as the key to protecting what one cares about.
Hidden Cloud Village[edit]
Lead by the Raikage, the Hidden Cloud Village consists of a multiple saucer-like platforms nested around the tops of the country's mountains. The Raikage's manor wraps around the tallest, with its blue glass surface looking upon everything within the village. These peaks were the ancestral home of the First Raikage, and when the Lightning Daimyo began searching to create his own hidden village, many clans flocked to it.
Allied Shinobi Forces' Headquarters[edit]
Shortly before the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Five Kage came together and founded a unified force in an ultimately successful attempt to stop the Akatsuki. As part of the Fourth Raikage's terms, its HQ was placed less than a day's travel from the Hidden Cloud Village, even for a genin. During the war, the Ten-Tails fired a tailed beast ball that reduced the headquarters to ashes. Post-war, a monument was placed at the crater's center, which became a common place for civilians and ninja alike to pay their gratitude to those that lost their lives during the war.
Genbu[edit]
Genbu is a massive turtle that dwarfs many islands. While it has existed long before even the Sage of Six Paths, it has seemingly allied itself with the Land of Lightning, allowing itself to be used as their equivalent to the Forest of Death, as well as a migratory safehouse, though it can spend years sleeping in a cove near the Sea Route of Silence. In the center of its back lies the Falls of Truth. By meditating, one can come face-to-face with the manifestation of their "true self". Only by coming to terms with this manifestation can they enter the Tailed Beast Temple behind the falls, a spacious holy site with a chamber designed to allow a jinchuriki to master their tailed beast, or contain it if they fail.
Saiyuki Valley[edit]
At the foot of the Land of Lightning's highest mountain, Saiyuki Valley is the largest sage region to not be one of the Three Great Unexplored Sage Regions, as it has experienced conflict with humanity many times in the past, which makes its pacifistic stance all the more impressive, especially when their sage elder, the tailed beast Son Gokū, has been stolen and sealed multiple times. While most of its inhabitants live within hidden caves with surprisingly modern interiors along Mount Saiyuki's surface, the lesser royalty lives in an ornate palace in the center of the valley, with each room being built by hand by its inhabitant as part of their coming of age ritual.
Sea Route of Silence[edit]
Running between the Land of Lightning and Land of Sky, this area is the fastest route to and from the eastern oceanic subcontinent despite its total lack of currents or wind, which keeps it eternally shrouded in mist. Additionally, a strange magnetic field disables any ships in the area, save for those in a small strip between continents, which it accelerates. Neither birds nor fish can survive in this area for long, leaving its only inhabitants to be ghost ships and the occasional corpse crab.
Valley of Clouds and Lightning[edit]
This cove has been the training ground for the Eight-Tails' jinchuriki since the founding of the Hidden Cloud Village, being far enough away for any destruction to not affect the village, but close enough for detachments to take down the jinchuriki should they lose control. In addition to its decorative training cave, there are various hidden trails its guardians, the Yotsuki clan, watch from.
Land of Water[edit]
The Land of Water is composed of many islands in the Mist Sea. Its islands are usually covered in thick mist and cool weather, and often contain lakes. Snow is quite common in the northern part of the nation. Each island has its own tradition, though they are unified by the Will of the Water: an ideology centering on sacrifice being superior to defeat. However, during the time of the Third and Fourth Mizukages, this ideology was twisted a way of "might makes right".
Hidden Mist Village[edit]
The Hidden Mist Village is a sprawling metropolis island lead by the Mizukage. Its tall, concrete buildings typically have some form of visible greenery, typically a small orchard on their rooftop. It was founded by Byakuren after the subjugation of the Hoshikage and Yuki clans. Due to the Land of Water's natural defenses, most of its ninjas train primarily as assassins and they rarely declare wars, though they are known to opportunistically join wars. Additionally, they have had multiple conflicts throughout history with the Kaguya and Funato clans.
Benisu Island[edit]
Benisu Island is a large island near the border of the Land of Hot Water. Sharing much of Nanakusa Island's ecology, its smaller size has allowed the Land of Water to claim full control over it. While Team Bando, a team consisting of the jonin Bando and the twin genin Kiji and Sada have declared independence of the "Land of Benisu", a single jonin and his lackeys aren't enough to dissuade the Land of Water, who mostly leaves them be for convenience.
Doto Island[edit]
Doto Island is a large fishing island to the south-east of the main island. From its peak, the entire island can be seen. After the Fourth Shinobi World War, the discovery of gold within the island caused its population and presence in the eyes of the public to explode, though its complex and soft ground made mining dangerous.
Whirlpool Island[edit]
This small island was once the Land of Whirlpools, home of the Uzumaki clan and the Hidden Eddy Village. However, during the Second Shinobi World War, it became a battlefield much like many other minor nations bordering the Five Great Shinobi Nations. After an intense battle between the Hidden Leaf and Cloud left much of the island in ruins, the Cloud and Mist decided to finish the job, fearing the power of the Uzumaki clan, leaving only a handful alive. Since then, a consensus on whose control the island falls under has never been reached, with even the Lands of Valleys and Hot Water vying for control, though by region it belongs to the Land of Water.
Messenger Island[edit]
A tiny, fortified island, Messenger Island is one of the few Land of Water islands not covered in mist. What few buildings make up the island's "town" are mainly temporary residences for deployed ninjas and an occasional local business to keep them fed and prepared. As its name implies, its primary use is receiving and sending messages, typically to the other great nations due to the Hidden Mist Village itself having a "kill on sight" policy for other countries' ninjas.
Mount Myoboku[edit]
Hidden deep within the Mist Sea around the Land of Water lies the sunsoaked Mountain of Bewilderment; Mount Myoboku. Its inhabitants, the sage toads, prefer to keep to themselves, only allowing a select few non-toads to know the hidden path to the mountain, along which one must travel for months on end. While falling within the region of the Land of Water, it's likely neither the Mizukage, nor the Water Daimyo, knows of its existence or location. It bears many waterfalls, quite a few of which the toads have built their distinct shelled buildings around. Additionally, the island's unique atmosphere allows the Sacred Oil Fountain to produce a unique form of oil that allows a creature to create twice as much senjutsu chakra when they meditate for 1 minute, though the oil evaporates if it leaves the island.
Nanakusa Island[edit]
A large, fertile island in the northern Mist Sea, Nanakusa Island is the sole home of many plants that can be used to create powerful curatives or poisons. Due to the bounty of the island, the lack of any settlements, and its proximity to the mainland, the Five Great Nations consider it neutral territory, though its location in the Mist Sea leaves it in the region of the Land of Water.
Purple Moon Island[edit]
A cold island to the north, Purple Moon Island gets its name from the plankton that dye its coasts red during the autumn, making the moon reflected on it appear purple. Its first settlers, of which there are currently ~3,000, formed a religion in awe of this phenomenon, believing nature to be the safeguard of humanity, and science to be an extension of nature. Due to this and their disapproval of mass transit and colonization, they do not consider themselves a part of the Land of Water and are largely unknown beyond it. Having been founded by ninja, its guardians wield firearms, bombs, and Lightning Sytle ninjutsu, though no single guardian of the Purple Moon is stronger than a chunin, though their ferocity and self-sacrificial nature must always be taken into account.
Sea of Death[edit]
A significant route to Nagi and Ouzu Island, Moon Island, and the Land of Tea, the Sea of Death is as fast as it is deadly due to turbulent currents and fierce winds. Additionally, its proximity to Funato Island and the Land of Silence means piracy is a persistent threat.
Shinonome[edit]
Once nothing more than a rough patch of sea known by a few for its beauty at dawn, the technological advancement following the Fourth Shinobi World War allowed the Land of Water to construct eight offshore power station platforms, calming the waters in the process allowing for new trade routes. This structure was the final straw for the Funato clan, who declared war, starting the Great Sea Battle of the Mist Village.
Summoning Island[edit]
Just off the coast of the Land of Valleys, Summoning Island is a small volcanic island the Land of Water uses to research and develop unique summoning animals, though other nations have purchased use of their laboratories in the past. However, the island was nearly destroyed when the Ultimate Summoning Beast broke free shortly after its creation, and while the lab has been rebuilt since, it has yet to fully return to full capacity.
Land of Wind[edit]
To the southwest of the Land of Fire lies the Land of Wind. While it covers a vast amount of land, most of it is desert. Due to the lack of rainfall, almost all of its villages surround an oasis. Despite their past rivalries, they have maintained a decent amount of trade and diplomacy with the Land of Fire. The Land of Wind lives by the Will of Wind: an ideology viewing all matters as a trade, with the one indispensable resource being one's family.
Hidden Sand Village[edit]
The Hidden Sand Village, lead by the Kazekage, has been almost untouched by foreign powers due to its harsh desert surroundings, the likes of which only shinobi native to this land can traverse, and its large crater-like walls believed to have been created by a god or the Sage of Six Paths. It was founded by Reto by declaring his clan to be natural royalty, using his control of Shukaku as proof. Its gourd-like, baked clay buildings create confusing, winding alleyways only split by its massive main road.
Ceramic Village[edit]
Near the Land of Rivers, Ceramic Village uses its surprisingly wet terrain to farm, forest, and most importantly make clay and other ceramics for houses, vessels, and buildings. It has historically been lead by the "Ceramic Gods", a powerful family living in a mansion at the village's center who master and store centuries of ceramic techniques. However, the terrorist Deidara destroyed the village in search of the last reserves of a special type of clay only found in the village, though a few survived and rebuilt the village.
Demon Desert[edit]
The driest patch of desert in the Land of Wind, the Demon Desert is a common training site for the Hidden Sand Village, and has been used for their Chunin Exams for generations. Behind its fortress walls are poisonous cacti, quick sand, and ancient ruins full of giant scorpions and ants.
Eastern Great Sand Dune[edit]
A hardened stone plateau near the border of the Land of That, this sand dune is a mysterious hideout full of various traps, poisonous snakes, and intentionally-confusing hallways. Even those from the Hidden Sand Village avoid it, but the Akatsuki has shown strange interest in it.
Okuriokami Oasis[edit]
At the center of Hell Desert, the hottest region of the Land of Wind capable of spontaneously igniting fires and boiling some creatures alive that takes days to even cross halfway, lies a beautiful oasis. Only accessible in the darkness of night, Okuriokami Oasis sits in constant night, with the moon bright and full enough to cast shadows under the large palms that border the lake. Its wolves are known in Hidden Sand Village archives to be capable of leading those they trust, or have received suitable payment from, to any location. While too small and explored, if marginally, to be considered as a Great Unexplored Sage Region, what few documents of its existence in the world have come from only a handful of sages who had survived the trip.
Roran[edit]
Once a great city in the Hidden Sand Village in the time of the Third and Fourth Kazekage, Roran's grand towers were only made possible by the great power beneath the city. However, when the Ryumyaku was sealed off, the city became vulnerable, and was destroyed during the Third Shinobi World War.
Land of Earth[edit]
To the northwest of the Land of Fire is the Land of Earth. Mostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas, its border runs along a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with other countries. The northern winds carry rocks from this range to the surrounding areas, resulting in a phenomenon known as “rock rain”. The Land of Earth lives by the Will of Stone: an ideology centering on inner strength and community as the enemy of hate.
Hidden Stone Village[edit]
The Hidden Stone Village, lead by the Tsuchikage, was once a series of mountain peaks, but have since been whittled down into large stone towers with massive sloped bases. It was founded by Ishikawa after organizing numerous small clans into formal military ranks.
Sanzu Plains[edit]
A hallowed training ground for the Hidden Stone Village, the Sanzu Plains are protected by an ancient force that keeps anyone within it from leaving or casting jutsu until they find what they came looking for, in most cases their "heart stone", a stone representing the Will of Stone. In the past, it has been used for the Stone's Chunin Exams, with the goal being to survive for a certain period of time rather than achieve a certain objective, which is only made harder by the giant wolf inhabiting the plains.
Shikkotsu Forest[edit]
Despite primarily being a desolate place, the northern Land of Earth bears a massive forest. Shikkotsu Forest is covered in a constant storm and protected by a ring of stone pillars known as the "damp bone ring" notorious for attracting lightning strikes at the slightest disturbance, especially when chakra-bearing lifeforms come close. The only known way to bypass this defense is for Katsuyu herself to allow one through.
Yosuga Pass[edit]
Yosuga Pass is an important location for the Hidden Stone Village; it is the main route to the Land of Waterfalls, the Earth Bay, and the numerous other countries that can be reached through them. To the rest of the Shinobi World, it is most known for the Tragedy of Yosuga Pass, a joint Stone-Mist operation to steal important documents from the Hidden Cloud Village for the betterment of both villages, but the Hidden Stone Village betrayed their agreement, accidentally leaving a single survivor who was able to escape with the documents.
Land of Ancestors[edit]
The oldest known country in the Shinobi World, the Land of Ancestors is said to predate even the Sage of Six Paths. Its pacifist agrarian culture is said to be protected by mysterious forces, which may explain or be explained by their abundance of ancient, powerful weapons. Regardless, none of their neighbors, even the Land of Wind, have dared to risk an invasion. It is home to Sora-ku, an abandoned city mostly inhabited by shady black marketers and ninja cats.
Land of the Arctic North[edit]
The coldest region in the world, the Arctic North is often considered completely uninhabitable. Thick ice sheets stretch in all directions. While every country in the northern glacial islands experiences shortened days, the arctic north spends all but one month a year in total darkness, turning the uninhabitable into an active danger zone as its ice sheets crack at the slightest provocation.
Land of Bamboo[edit]
One of the few nations still ruled by a formal king and his court rather than a daimyo. Facing potential invasion from the Land of Noodles, Ships, Wind, and Jungle, they have allied themselves with the Land of Fire, even using the great nation as a means to evade assassination. As its name implies, it is largely covered in thick bamboo forests, causing every village to appear hidden to less seasoned travelers.
Land of Bean Jam[edit]
One of many countries along the land bridge from the central subcontinent to the western subcontinent, the Land of Bean Jam produces all sorts of confections. It is largely demilitarized, making enough income to afford platoons of shinobi should an invasion begin. Much of the country is costal, with even the most inland regions having a sandy, sun-bleached atmosphere.
Land of Bears[edit]
Bridging the Land of Earth and Wind, the Land of Bears is named after its large numbers of predatory wildlife hidden within its pine forests. Its ninja village, the Hidden Star Village, is empowered by an artifact from the skies, and is protected on all sides by the Devil's Ravine; a deep valley filled with a natural poisonous gas.
Land of Birds[edit]
The Land of Birds is the only piece of land truly connecting the central and western subcontinents. A marshy land, its many rivers connect the lakes spawned by the Mountain Strait and Secret Strait, and without much solid land, it is mostly populated by birds. While it often seems like an easy country to invade and industrialize to many rogue nin, in particular the Watari Ninja, its daimyo lineage is surprisingly wily and makes enough from ferrying cargo across their rivers to afford ninja missions.
Land of Calm Seas[edit]
Historically, the Land of Calm Seas has lied in ruins, milked for all it was worth by the Lands of Silence and Haze. However, after the Fourth Shinobi World War, the country's daimyo made a hard decision, if they could not keep their neighbors from stealing from them, they would simply steal it back. With this new policy, the nation was reinvigorated. Its terrain is generally flat, occasionally broken up by sheer cliffs stretching up into strange hills. Atop one particular set of hills lies Nadeshiko Village, a small, matrilineal village of strong, taijutsu-using kunoichi.
Land of Claws[edit]
Bitter rivals with the Land of Fangs, the Land of Claws farms around the many rivers that run through it. It oversees the Secret Strait, a useful channel to quickly reach the Mountain Inlet and Gulf of Wind. It is home to many ninja cats, even containing the Cat Fortress of Nekomata.
Land of Demons[edit]
The greatest country of the western subcontinent, the Land of Demons was founded to create a system to protect the priestess of the shrine containing Moryo's body. The country is generally overcast, with many of its forests and hills covered in mist.
Land of Fangs[edit]
Bitter rivals with the Land of Claws, the Land of Fangs's rivers feed into the lake at the center of the land bridge connecting the western and central subcontinent. Its name is in reference to the many shear mountains that dot its surface, looking like fangs to some.
Land of Flowers[edit]
The Land of Flowers' soft, rich soil, fed by the salty ocean along its eastern coast, makes it perfect for growing its namesake and main export. Additionally, it produces a large surplus of food, almost single-handedly feeding the Land of Earth. Additionally, it is home to Sugi Village, a small ninja village. While it is largely comprised of medical nin who assist in farming, it had a few researching ninjutsu powerful enough to force the Land of Lightning to organize a mission involving the Fourth Raikage to steal it. In response, they hired the Nokizaru Group to retrieve the scroll, but they were ultimately unsuccessful.
Land of Forests[edit]
The Land of Forests is covered coast-to-coast in thick forests, only broken by the occasional rivers. Within this country is the Forest of Bewilderment, a patch of woods under very similar effects as the Sea Route of Silence. Unless a specific path is followed, one can become completely lost. Due to these conditions, it's been used as a hideout for the Shinobazu.
Land of Frost[edit]
Just north of the Land of Hot Water, cold currents from the frigid north chill the Land of Frost to a near-permanent cold. The Hidden Frost Village within is the country's primary source of revenue for what few residents the nation has. Its highest point, the great Mount Shumisen, is considered to be the center of the world for some.
Land of Frozen Islands[edit]
The Land of Frozen Islands are a series of free-floating glaciers near the northern glacial islands. It is home to a handful of nomadic ninja groups who use Water Style to stabilize the ice blocks long enough for Fire and Wind Style users to carve out temporary homes within, typically reshaping the leftover ice into a glacial seed.
Land of Grass[edit]
The Land of Grass is a fairly modernize country, with all of its buildings being built like small fortresses to protect them from the crossfire of the Shinobi World Wars. It is home to grassy plains, bamboo forests, and forest-like patches of giant mushrooms, all of which often contain rivers or ravines. Its ninja village, the Hidden Grass Village, is considered exceptionally powerful for a minor nation, leading to an alliance with the Hidden Leaf Village. It is home to two major bridges necessary for the Land of Fire to travel to the northeast: Kannabi Bridge, once the biggest bridge in the world, and Tenchi Bridge, a small wooden suspension bridge.
Land of Graves[edit]
The Land of Graves is believed to be a cursed land, in part due to the massive bone structures that dot its landscape. While some theorize them to be from an even larger species of dragon, others believe them to be remnants of the Sage of Six Paths' fight with the Ten-Tails. Its mossy, mountainous land is sparsely populated, with most of its human inhabitants living in and around Mount Katsuragi, and the nearby Tsuchigumo Village, a quaint ninja village founded by En no Gyoja. Deep within the country is a mine, dubbed the Mountains' Graveyard, with ruins said to date before the Sage of Six Paths.
Land of Gelel[edit]
The furthest east of any nation, the Land of Gelel is home to the legendary Stone of Gelel. Between the stone's power and their isolationist tendencies, they are completely ignorant in the ways of ninjutsu. The country has been ruined by war time and again, leading to most of its people becoming nomadic. Across the entire nation, only a single location has withstood time and battle: the Sealing Room. This great stone chamber contains the seal for the Vein of Gelel, the greatest source of the stone, that can only be undone and redone by the country's dwindling royal bloodline.
Land of Haze[edit]
A cold, swampy country, the Land of Haze is one step removed from the criminal Land of Silence, being commanded by a formal government that supports and benefits from raiding neighboring nations. Its shinobi are known to have access to esoteric techniques. It is thought that Hinode Bridge is the only safe way between the Lands of Haze and Silence.
Land of Honey[edit]
One of many countries along the land bridge from the central subcontinent to the western subcontinent, the Land of Honey mainly produces raw materials for the Land of Bean Jam. The two countries have a very strong relationship, with them even being the Land of Bean Jam's main export route out through the Mountain Strait.
Land of Hot Water[edit]
The Land of Hot Water, much like the Land of Fire, is a warm, forested region. It has many hot springs, with their uses ranging from tourism to medicine production, to their surprisingly plentiful potato crop. The Hidden Steam Village reluctantly provided defense for the small country, having turned away from shinobi missions after the Third Shinobi World War. After the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Hidden Steam Village entirely demilitarized, becoming a very popular tourist destination. Additionally, it is home to Bamboo Village, a hot spring-based town that uses its warm mineral water to farm vast amounts of bamboo in short amounts of time, and the Valley of Hell, the forced home of the Chinoike thought to flow with blood, though in reality it is iron-rich spring water.
Land of Ice[edit]
The Land of Ice is a series of frozen hills constantly pelted by hail. Its people are said to be some of the toughest in the world, building grand, ornate ice buildings in the midst of these conditions, and thriving against all odds. They primarily fish, though hunting bears and whales is also common among its people.
Land of Ice Caves[edit]
The Land of Ice Caves is considered the forbidden land of the north. Blanketed in constant snowfall that heavily obscures the terrain, it is home to the greater onbaa, a species of onbaa said to hunt bears and resist ninjutsu casually. If given the chance, they will always hunt humans.
Land of Iron[edit]
The Land of Iron is protected by formidable warriors known as samurai, whose harsh lifestyle is only matched by the harsh winter that blankets their homeland. Due to their immense strength and differing ideology from shinobi, there is an agreement among the other nations to not interfere. Due to this, it is often used as a neutral meeting ground among the shinobi nations. Even if one were to attempt an invasion of the Land of Iron, the only known gap in their surrounding mountain range is Samurai Bridge and the other nearby bridges, which limit troop movements and are constantly watched. In the wake of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Shinobi Union Headquarters was founded in this nation. Its capitol is the Three Wolves, three mountains with unnatural overhangs that make them appear like howling wolves.
Land of Islands[edit]
The Land of Islands is an alliance formed by three smaller nations: Nagi Island, Ouza Island, and Funato Island, which is technically a pair of smaller islands. The region is a dreary, overcast rainforest, and the people of Nagi and Ouza are surprisingly religious, maintaining two of the grandest shrines in the world. The Funato clan on the other hand is a prideful militarized nation, often taking to piracy as the "natural way of the sea"
Land of Jungles[edit]
Similar to the Land of Islands, though on the opposite side of the Land of Tea, the Land of Jungles is a humid, dreary rainforest. While logging is one of the land's major industries, it moves slowly due to the abundance of medicines and foods that can be extracted from even a single tree. It is home to the Tree Felling Village, a secluded town once ruled by Black Shadow.
Land of Keys[edit]
Home to rolling, grassy hills dotted with small boulders, the Land of Keys is home to Jomae Village, which trains some of most skilled shinobi when it comes to infiltration and espionage. It is through this nation-level blackmail that the Land of Keys has prospered without harm, even when caught between the Lands of Earth and Wind.
Land of Medicine[edit]
Close allies with the Land of Iron, the Land of Medicine produces cures stronger than any military pill, which is almost exclusively purchased by the Land of Iron in exchange for protection. If one follows the easter-most of the Three Wolves Mountains' maws, they will find themself as Howling Wolf Village, a small mountainside village from which most of the land's ingredients come from, and home to the great beast Roen.
Land of the Moon[edit]
Lying between the Land of Tea and Nagi Island, the Land of the Moon, less formally known as Moon Island or formerly Mokuzu Island, is a crescent shaped tropical island. Owing loyalty to a king rather than a daimyo, it is a paradise to some, and a nightmare for others. For the rich, good food is plentiful, and one can find no end to excitement. For the poor, the only way to pay such high taxes and survive is to sell weapons or become a pirate. However, after the deaths of its king Kakeru Tsuki and his successor and assassin Shabadaba, his son King Michiru Tsuki took great strides in bringing equality to his land.
Land of Mountain Streams[edit]
As water from the frigid north melts, it eventually runs through the Land of Mountain Streams, where it travels through the Lands of Mountains and Vegetables before pooling in the locks south of the Mountain Strait. It is home to only a few sustenance farmers and a daimyo, allowing rogue nin to use it as a hideout.
Land of Mountains[edit]
The Land of Mountains is home to many mineral deposits, and thus many mines, making it an invaluable resource to any weapons manufacturer. Due to this, their own Kagero Village was a major seller of ninja tools during the Second Shinobi World War, but due to mostly selling to the Lands of Earth and Wind, the Hidden Leaf Village organized a surprise attack. With their means of production destroyed for the remainder of the war, a ceasefire was called, only for the Hidden Valleys Village to finish the job two weeks later. Only a single bitter survivor remained: Genno.
Land of Neck[edit]
The Land of Neck was once a thriving country, though it lay beyond the purview of the Five Great Nations. However, while the central subcontinent enjoyed an unstable peace following the First Shinobi World War, a much smaller war was brewing to the south. While the Lands of Fangs and Claws cemented their rivalries, and another from the Land of Swamps attempted to slay the Land of Demons' priestess, the Land of Redaku slaughtered the Land of Neck. With the country now a scorched wasteland, leaving its final weapon, the gargantuan chameleon Shiromari, disguised as Daimyo Koza's castle, to protect the barren plains.
Land of Noodles[edit]
A major importer of the Lands of Hot Water and Flowers' food surpluses, the Land of Noodles is a costal region covered in all kinds of kitchens. Exporting all kinds of foods from their own Noodle Bay ranging from basic military pills to bowls that rival the Curry of Life, they are the primary source of the rare cooking-nin.
Land of the Poles[edit]
The Polar Region, more commonly referred to as the Land of the Poles, is a frigid region similar to the Land of the Artic North with one exception, its total lack of life, currents, or wind, and a strange magnetic field that slows and confuses anything in the area, man or machine. Additionally, unlike the Sea Route of Silence and the Forest of Bewilderment, there is no known route of safe passage.
Land of Rain[edit]
The Land of Rain is a small, near-endlessly rainy region of mossy plains and vast rivers. Even its smallest villages consist of tall metal towers with all matters of lightning redirection, humidity control pipes, and metal chimneys running along their exterior. Its Hidden Rain Village has been considered relative to the Five Great Nations in strength, but even still the countryside has been ravaged by every war waged across it.
Land of Redaku[edit]
A relatively lifeless wetland, the Land of Redaku was once covered with all manner of "dragons", ranging from genryu to sauropods. Its ancient, ornate stone buildings are said to have been a favorite of the Sage of Six Paths, as did its typically peaceful manner, having only waged a single war against its only neighbor, which was considered monstrous at the time. Even jutsu are considered a form of fictitious magic to its current residents. To its north is Nagare Village, its capital, and just north beyond the border, into the wilderness, is the Astronomy Research Institute. Here, all manner of research the rest of the Land of Redaku couldn't dream of is done, sometimes involving human prisoners. Its prized possession is hidden at the bottom of a nearby lake; the only known remaining Polar Particles.
Land of Rivers[edit]
A colorful, marshy country with many rivers, the Land of Rivers is a perfect example of a nation regularly trampled on during the Shinobi World Wars, with few permanent structures and an unkillable grudge. Their Hidden Valleys Village, with what few shinobi why had, destroyed the Land of Mountains' Kagero Village for the sole purpose of sewing dissent between them and the Hidden Leaf Village, which is only one in a number of such operations. Additionally, it is home to Katabami Gold Mine, a mining town that could have made them rich enough to defend themselves had Raiga Kurosuki not taken over, and later destroyed it. To the south, Takumi Village produces most of the country's weapons and once acted as a second ninja village before its founder's failed resurrection. To make matters worse, the first Akatsuki hideout to be discovered was within the Land of Rivers, only leading to more invasions.
Land of Rock[edit]
Stony like the Land of Earth and flat like the Land of Wind, the Land of Rock is nearly inhospitable, only in part by the collateral damage caused with each Shinobi World War. An order of priests act as the nation's daimyo equivalent, leading to an abundance of temples in and around its capital. The country also has a small ninja village, the Hidden Rock Village, though they typically act as the sharp knife of the priesthood rather than taking on shinobi missions. Additionally, it is home to the rogue-nin haven Shangri-la, a surprisingly large wooden village shrouded under the Valley of Lies, a region that picks up the pleasant scent of the nearby lake that the village's inhabitants use as a medium for a genjutsu that turns non-rogues away.
Land of Sand[edit]
The Land of Sand is far to the west, separating the Land of Swamps from the Land of Gelel. For unknown reasons, particles of gold are littered among its hot desert terrain. Due to the surprising affluence of the country, the Sand Daimyo is known far and wide as an eccentric, if surprisingly trustworthy and well-traveled, individual.
Land of the Sea[edit]
A small archipelago to the south of the Land of Tea, the Land of the Sea never truly had its own government. Instead, Orochimaru posed as a prospective land magnate while secretly turning the islands into his own unethical laboratory, allowing his subjects to come right to him. However, this ruse was quickly found out, and the archipelago lies uninhabited to this day.
Land of Silence[edit]
Once a mountainous costal region led by a daimyo who wished to recreate the success of the Land of Iron, the Silence Daimyo was overthrown by Gengo and his cult trying to spread their control in hopes of one day conquering the great eastern island, and then using their numbers to invade and destroy the Five Great Nations. However, after Gengo himself was deposed, the country devolved into lawlessness. Its capital, Curtain Village, is a misty metropolis that has since become an impenetrable den of thieves the Shinobi Union could never hope to rebuild.
Land of the Sky[edit]
Long ago, the great eastern island's peoples came together to create a perfect city which they called the Land of the Sky: a great flying machine powered by chakra. But as the island split into warring nations, the Land of the Sky fell, becoming its own warring nation in turn; a sparsely forested plain with a great treasure slowly being buried. While the original Land of the Sky would fly only once more, being powered by the Zero-Tails instead of ground-based chakra generators, its people would become more well known for their advanced technology, often considered the second step to Scientific Ninja Tools.
Land of Snow[edit]
The Land of Snow is a small, peaceful nation to in the far north. Its landscape is a veritable tundra, being covered in snow and ice year round. Most of the coastline is covered in mountains and glaciers, thus making an invasion by sea nigh impossible. Like the Land of the Sky, the Hidden Snow Village's advanced technology is often considered the second step to Scientific Ninja Tools. The country is ruled from Kazahan Castle, a traditional fortress once burnt down, but since rebuilt with assistance from this technology. Following the Fourth Shinobi World War, Boro and his cultists built a secret base near the polar north unknown to even Kara.
Land of Sound[edit]
Formerly the Land of Rice Fields, the Land of Sound a small nation boarding the lands of Fire and Snow. As its former name suggests, it is covered in fertile farmland, enabling it to ensure a modicum of peace with its neighbors through trading. The Hidden Sound Village was only founded in the wake of the Third Shinobi World War by Orochimaru, one of the legendary Sannin, as a personal experimentation laboratory after he took control, much to the chagrine of the warrior clans already inhabiting the country.
Land of Swamps[edit]
The Land of Swamps is a marshy land with few villages. Still, it has caught itself up in a bitter rivalry with the Land of Demons after many attempts to unite the body of Moryo with its spirit. It is home to the Genjutsu Tree Village, a miniscule shinobi village protected by its surroundings, which produce all kinds of natural genjutsu.
Land of That[edit]
A country nearly as ancient as the Land of Ancestors, the Land of That is entrenched in a bitter rivalry with the Land of This. Much like its rival, it is a humid, forested area with many lakes and small swamps. To its eastern border with the Land of Wind lies the small village of Green Banks. While poor for much of its life, the increased travel and decreased threat of war after the Fourth Shinobi World War allowed them to build a bridge, revitalizing the town.
Land of This[edit]
A country nearly as ancient as the Land of Ancestors, the Land of This is entrenched in a bitter rivalry with the Land of That. Much like its rival, it is a humid, forested area with many lakes and small swamps. Despite its necessary defensive capabilities, it was once a popular tourist destination before Sasori of the Red Sand destroyed the village under orders from the Land of That shortly before the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Land of Valleys[edit]
A place of barren mountains and rich, woody valleys beneath them, the Land of Valleys has withstood the Shinobi World Wars thanks to all of its villages being effectively hidden. While it has produced pharmaceuticals for much of its life, Victor's company caused this industry to skyrocket. Along its border with the Land of Fire is Mount Koryu, home to the last genryu and a field that disrupts chakra in people outside of specially designed suits, keeping them from casting jutsu.
Land of Vegetables[edit]
The Land of Vegetables is covered in rich, yellow soil and warm, pleasant weather that makes it ideal for farming. It is largely a demilitarized village, being able to afford ninja teams when needed, though this has left it vulnerable on multiple occasions, such as when the Janin overthrew the Vegetables Daimyo for an extended period of time.
Land of Waterfalls[edit]
A land of sparse forests broken up by large mineral-infused lakes upon which trees the size of cities grow, the Land of Waterfalls is a proud nation. The Hidden Waterfall Village, built within the roots of one of its great trees, has held control of the Seven Tails even during the First Hokage's quest to round up the tailed beasts, and prides itself on having singlehandedly fended off every invasion that has threatened their nation.
Land of Waves[edit]
The smallest country in the Shinobi World, the Land of Waves consists of a single island covered in various misty fishing hamlets. Its history is one of exploitation, being vulnerable to pirates for much of its history, and in recent history being under the tyrannical thumb of Gato Company. It wasn't until Tazuna, a bridge builder, finished the Great Naruto Bridge, the largest bridge in the world connecting it to the Land of Fire, that the Land of Waves was finally free.
Land of Woods[edit]
This untamed forested area has been home to the Prajna Group, a large team of chunin-level mercenaries, for generations. The savage wildlife within the Land of Woods has necessitated that they become equally cunning, often betraying alliances for personal gain.
Other Locations[edit]
The Moon[edit]
Long ago, Hagoromo and Hamura sealed the Gedo Mazo within a large stone prison high in the atmosphere. With a barren surface but sustainable atmosphere, Hamura stayed on the moon, shaping his own clan that would one day become the Hyuga and Otsutsuki clans. There is only one portal through which to reach the moon easily, and even it is guarded by the Gatekeeper.
Core Dimension[edit]
One of the many dimensions known to the Otsutsuki clan, the Core Dimension is sometimes believed to be the origin of existence. Its rough, red baked ground and putrid yellow sky stretch into infinity, and the dimension itself is overflowing with energy, allowing any creature on this plane to regain 5 chakra as a bonus action. Accessing this dimension with jutsu costs twice as much chakra.
Acid Dimension[edit]
One of the "second generation" of dimensions, the Acid Dimension is an endless sea of acid. Any creature that ends their turn within this dimension must attempt a DC 20 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they take 2d6 acid damage and are blinded until the end of their next turn. On a success, they take half as much damage.
Desert Dimension[edit]
One of the "second generation" of dimensions, the desert dimension is an infinite expanse of sand dunes without even a drop of moisture. Creatures suffer dehydration ten times as quickly within this dimension.
Gravity Dimension[edit]
One of the "second generation" of dimensions, though sometimes believed to be the opposite of the Core Dimension, the Gravity Dimension is a series of rolling hills covered in small, perfectly formed pyramids. Any creature that ends their turn within this dimension must succeed a DC 20 Strength saving throw or spend 10 chakra to avoid becoming paralyzed until the end of their next turn.
Ice Dimension[edit]
One of the "third generation" of dimensions, only one generation separated from Earth's, this dimension is an endless expanse of ice-covered mountains. It bears many regions similar to the Lands of Poles, Ice, Ice Caves and Arctic North. Its only permanent structure is a single castle used long ago as an Otsutsuki base. Creatures have disadvantage on saving throws against extreme cold in this dimension.
Lava Dimension[edit]
One of the "third generation" of dimensions, only one generation separated from Earth's, this dimension is an endless expanse of volcanoes and lava lakes that turn the sky black with ash. There is very little solid ground, with the only long-term survivable region bearing a single castle used long ago as an Otsutsuki base. Creatures have disadvantage on saving throws against extreme heat in this dimension.
Kamui Dimension[edit]
The Kamui Dimension is a unique plane of reality that is most easily accessible through Kamui. While it's relatively small in terms of dimensions, it is large enough that even the fastest shinobi could never hope to reach its edges within their lifetime. It is covered in dim light and filled with a vast amount of 20 foot gray cubes of varying height.
Dead Dimension[edit]
A parallel dimension to Earth's, this dimension once had a multitude of planets bearing all kinds of alien life. However, one by one, God Tree by God Tree, each of these planets had its life drained from it by the Otsutsuki, resulting in dry, barren landscapes with black, dusty skies. Should the skies clear, however, it can be ascertained that this dimension lacks stars, instead having bright bands of light stretching across each planetary system.
Drained Dimension[edit]
Similar to the Dead Dimension, this dimension has had most of its life taken from it by the Otsutsuki. Unlike it, however, small amounts of life have been allowed to survive on each of its planets, keeping its atmospheres a luminescent purple. In a few millennia, these worlds may once again flourish.
Underworld Dimension[edit]
Another fourth generation dimension, this dimension is a series of caves made of root-like stone in all directions. These caves contain all sorts of life, with many even becoming similar to mangrove swamps. It was first discovered by ROOT as part of their research, and was used to empower and house Nue. It was named due to its similarity with many legends of the underworld across the Shinobi World.
