If the ground the target stands on is not penetrable, the spell fails. The target can make a strength saving throw to pull their feet free from the roots. Upon failure, the target is immobilized. They are unable to expend their movement, and spells and other actions to cause the target to move fail. However, the target is allowed to mitigate 1d8 damage from any source as long as they are rooted in the earth. If the damage taken is Blunt, the target may mitigate the maximum amount without rolling.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the amount of die to mitigate damage increases by 1d8 per level.
