Sourcing Images[edit]
Hey, just popping in to ask you to link the page images come from too. It makes my job of hunting down the source a lot easier, since you likely know where it comes from. Thanks. --SwankyPants (talk) 08:44, 5 March 2021 (MST)
- Hey, me again. I appreciate the attempt to source it, but we gotta do these things right, so I'll give you the steps to actually pulling it off the first time.
- This is the formatting
<div class="externalimage-holder" style="width:100%">{{5e Image|center|<!--Link to image-->|<!--Caption, art credit, link to source-->}}</div>
- First, you see the image part? If you get it from a wiki, you have to open the image in a seperate browser, grab the link for that, and cut everything off until you hit the first .jpg or .png. Next, take the link of the page you took it from, and put it into this, "[ Source]", putting the link beside the left bracket. Left bracket is the link, right bracket is what it shows up as, like so. Following these steps, you have a credited image that's also formatted properly. Good luck! --SwankyPants (talk) 11:08, 9 March 2021 (MST)
Okay dude, seriously, why do you struggle to use the formatting so much? Do we have to spam you constantly to remind you that this very easy-to-use, effective method of giving pictures to pages exists? It's not that hard? I don't mean to sound rude, but it is incredibly frustrating that we keep telling you what to do and not only do you not do it, you seem to actively ignore it. Also, not to sound biased as the guy who found the picture for the Utahraptor, but why do you have to replace those images? But the previously stated thing is more important than that, so please just use the format that we keep telling you about, over and over. --Dinomaster337 (talk) 12:12, 16 March 2021 (MST)
LeToastyBoi: Im bad at the proper formatting because I am not very smart, and also due to the fact that i cant grab links from certain places like deviantart due to the age restrictions my parents put on the device that I work on, so for those I try to credit the artist and hope someone else can make the formatting in the way that i cannot
- It’s not too hard, man, just copy the formatting above. The “link to image” doesn’t actually work with DA, so you can also avoid that. Just remember to at least put their username in the credit, as that makes sourcing with links significantly easier for us. --SwankyPants (talk) 11:07, 16 March 2021 (MDT)
- Hi. First off I would like to apologize. I was incredibly rude and didn't mean to make you feel lesser about yourself if that was what I did. It's obvious your young and I judged you unfairly because of it. I assumed that you were either a late teenager or an adult and I treated you as such. With that in mind, you are not stupid, you're just young. You'll learn with practice and it's quite simple. All you have to do is copy and paste the link into the formate. Like this:
<div class="externalimage-holder" style="width:100%">{{5e Image|center|https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/79/Chubutisaurus.jpg/220px-Chubutisaurus.jpg|<[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chubutisaurus Source]}}</div>
But yes, it doesn't work with DeviantArt. --Dinomaster337 (talk) 1:20, 16 March 2021 (MST)
Fictional Dinosaurs[edit]
Hi. Just so you know we aren't just removing some animals from the Dinosaurs category, we are creating a category dedicated specifically to fictional dinosaurs. --Dinomaster337 (talk) 10:59, 17 March 2021 (MST)
ToastyBoi: I feel like they should stay as it adds a little more variety and life to the page, I implemented some of the fictional dinosaurs from media like Jurassic Park and Ark: Survival Evolved because they are classed as dinosaurs and it just feels right to have them there. Because all of the Fictional Dinosaurs I linked onto the page were looked at for around 10 minutes and then i decided whether it was an actual dinosaur/Mesozoic Reptile or if it was a dragon with no wings.
- I mean, they are still on the page, just in a separate section below the real ones. They aren’t going anywhere, so there’s nothing to be worried about. At least, that’s how it’s set up so far. --SwankyPants (talk) 12:14, 17 March 2021 (MDT)
Just noticed that. But just to clear the mud, Dracorex is technically real, but the debate is whether or not it is its own genus, the same goes for Nanotyrannus and Stygimoloch—The preceding unsigned comment was added by LeToastyBoi (talk • contribs) . Please sign your posts.
- Ah, I just figured by the name that it wasn't a real dinosaur. Didn't have a lot to go off of, with that previously empty statblock too. Oh well, move the stuff if you see fit, you've probably got a better idea of where to put it. --SwankyPants (talk) 07:00, 18 March 2021 (MDT)
LeToastyBoi It's all good. Dracorex does sound like a fictional creature, name meaning Dragon King and all that.
- Speaking of fictional dinosaurs, I made Brontosaurus a fictional dino because it was fabricated with the body of an apatosaurus and the head of a camarasaurus. --MythicActions2000 (talk)
Creature creation and balance[edit]
Hey, just dropping a note here to tell you that damage dice are calculated using the average of the dice, not the maximum. The average of a die is equal to half of its maximum plus one half, so the average of a d10 is 5.5. When calculating a creature's damage, you add the average of all dice plus the relevant modifier. For example, a CR 3 creature with a +3 in strength that deals 2d6 damage would have the following attack pattern:
+5 to hit (str plus proficiency bonus), 10 (2d6+3) damage
I recommend reading The Angry GM's series on putting statblocks together, as well as using 5etools's CR calculator. It can look complex at first, but there's an excellent and sensible formula used to make most monsters and ensure they're balanced. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 14:14, 18 March 2021 (MDT)
Ok, thanks m8. I never understood that and thought that a random number in that range was barfed out and slapped on.
- No, no, there's a method to the madness that is creature stat blocks. It just takes a bit of time to get used to. --IntellectMaster (talk) 12:39, 25 March 2021 (MDT)
- I've also been reading through some of those creatures and wanted to share some tips regarding common mistakes between those (and to recommend you to read the DMG, particularly the part about creating monsters between pages 273 and 283).
- Hit dice size is determined by class levels or, most commonly, creature size. From 1d4 for tiny creatures to 1d20 for gargantuan creatures (page 276 of the DMG). Moreover, the cons modifier is added to each individual dice, so a creature with N hd with a dS size and C cons will have hp equal to NdS+N*C (for a tiny creature with 3 hd and a cons mod of +1 it would be 10 (3d4+3), for example). Ah, we use the average roll here too.
- to hit and damage modifiers are (usually) calculated using one of its stats (only one per attack), and as PCs do, creatures get a proficiency mod to add to their proficiencies (DMG, page 274).
- The minimum AC a certain creature can have is 10+dex (with +3 dex you have a minimum of 13 AC and with -5 dex you have a minimum of 5 AC (and yes, there are creatures with 5 AC))
- Those are the most common issues I've found, if you need more info feel free to ask (or read the DMG :P). In general for CR calculation I would recommend 5e.tools (as Nuke mentioned) but you can also do it by hand using the already mentioned chapter of the DMG if you so prefer. Draelm (talk) 09:45, 25 March 2021 (MDT)
- Time to add my two cents: A lot of your dinosaur stat block both use terminology not found in this system (except maybe on other homebrews, which isn't supported either), and some of your features are trying to re-invent the wheel: as in, there's already a feature that does what you want, but in a better and more balanced way. And some of your dinosaurs have very strange powers aren't well defined and that they shouldn't have in the first place, like the amargasaurus. (Using this example, what does "flee and disengage from combat" mean? Does it take the Disengage action and then move? Or does it teleport far enough away to effectively end the combat?) For a comparison, the MM has a huge section of "Miscellaneous Creatures", most of which are beasts and of those, none have unique powers or abilities. Unique abilities like those are given to monstrosities instead, which can look very similar to beasts but are not "natural" like a beast is.
- You also seem to have a lot of campaign-specific lore contained in your dinosaur descriptions, which should be relegated to DM and campaign notes instead of the general stat blocks. Otherwise, I do generally enjoy these expansions on the 5 dinosaurs found in the MM. Ah, and thinking of those found in the MM, I feel I should mention that none of the "normal" dinosaurs should be stronger than the tyrannosaurus: what natural (land-based) creature could possibly top the land carnivore with the highest bite force that has ever lived? CR 8 is the highest any of these should go, period. --IntellectMaster (talk) 12:39, 25 March 2021 (MDT)
ToastyBoi: The powers part of the dinosaurs is to make them stand out from the rest, there is no need for their existence. And besides, why can't a dinosaur have magical powers, I felt that it made them unique. And for the "Campaign specific details". I just through those in their to give a little bit accounts of the terror/power of these creatures. I never made a campaign about this, I just saw someone had done that for Diplodocus, and thought it gave the creature a little more personality. Also, the Base Rex is not really to strong, it should be buffed. I just don't want to confuse people by making a thing called BUFF REX
- With the Campaign specific details bit, he meant that Chuult is a part of the Tome of Annihilation campaign and the Forgotten Realms setting of DND, the which could make it difficult to adapt if it’s tied to such a specific place (as opposed to fiends from the Nine Hells, which is a place found in multiple dnd settings). --Dinomaster337 (talk) 12:39, 25 March 2021 (MDT)
ToastyBoi: I remember that now, I made new creatures tied to Chuult, and just made Arkamata as a big island, however, each biome can be taken and thrown somewhere else.
- It's still an extra step or two for anyone not familiar with the setting (like myself, who never cared) to figure out what kind of environments all these seemingly randomly named areas with strange bits of lore I couldn't care less about actually are. Also, I don't know if you are signing your posts differently on purpose or what, but the typical signature is two dashes ("-") followed by four tildes ("~") in a row. I myself (for a very long time, stopped only recently) used to only use the tildes before I saw the difference between what I was doing and what I was supposed to be doing. :3 --IntellectMaster (talk) 12:06, 29 March 2021 (MDT)

CR30 Sauropod Dinosaurs[edit]
Hello, my name is The Wizened Throne and I wanted to talk to you about a couple of the dinosaur pages you created.
I have been looking through the higher CR homebrew creatures and I noticed that there were three very similar CR 30 creatures listed on this site: The Amphicoelias, the Titanosaurus, and the Argentinosaurus are all CR 30 and are all almost identical. The Titanosaurus and the Argentinosaurus have the same Max HP. The Titanosaurus and the Amphicoelias have the exact same Ability Scores and the exact same number of damage dice in their stomp attacks.
Below are the links so you can see what I am talking about:
I know these are all inspired by some super-powerful dinosaur creature in a past edition (which I unfortunately do not know the name of). I love the idea of these creatures, but I feel they should be better distinguished from each other, for the benefit of the site and also for the benefit of DMs, looking for something particular. There aren't that many CR28 or 29 creatures after all.
Would you take objection to me making minor changes to the ability scores and changing the CR of the Titanosaurus and Argentinosaurus? The last time I tried to change some aspects of the Amphicoelias, someone just undid all of my work, so I want to make sure you are okay with me doing this, before I do it.
If you think I am being overly pedantic, feel free to tell me and I will drop the subject. I don't want to step on any toes and its not that big of a deal, I just thought it might be a quick edit that wouldn't damage the authorial intent of the creatures.
Have a good day!
- 1. Sign your posts. 2. The Amphicoelias is not his work. It existed before he was on the platform I'm pretty sure. --Dinomaster337 (talk) 11:34, 27 October 2021 (MDT)
- Sorry, I know that the Amphicoelias wasn't created by him, that's why I only asked permission to edit the pages that LeToasty has created. I brought up the Amphicoelias because it's an important part of the issue. I never meant to imply that he had created all three of them. --The Wizened Throne (talk)
ToastyBoi: You are good to edit some of my stuff, I based the Titanosaurus and Argentinosaurus stats on Amphicoelias, however I scaled them up as the former two are much larger in size, so i made them better
Question of editing[edit]
Hi. I know in principle the Dand Wiki allows anyone to edit anything, but I still have to question why you feel the need to edit other people's work to make the dinosaurs fit into a setting that was clearly not in mind when the creator made them, instead of making your own version. All you have to do is put (Variant) in the name and do whatever you with complete creative control. I hope I don't come off as a dick, but I couldn't hold it in anymore. --Dinomaster337 (talk) 12:27 31 April 2022
Yeah, I gave up on the setting and keep forgetting to re-edit them, I was mostly just trying to give lore to the dinosaurs because of the fact that storytelling is my strong suite, and I feel like the lore just adds a little bit more personality to the dinosaurs. And don't worry about feeling like a dick, I take get worse shit from people all the time, constructive criticism is welcome as it allows me to see what I'm doing wrong instead of just saying that I'm doing something wrong--LeToastyBoi (talk) 1:23 6 April 2022
