Spartan-Is, originally designated ORION, were chosen from the top performing UNSC infantry during the Insurrectionist War to be the first foray into human super-soldiers. After training that would make an ODST weep, each ORION soldier was given biological augmentation and a rudimentary suit of ORION Exoframe Load Carrier power armor. However, the of the original test group, all 5 suffered a unique form of advanced degenerative disorders, or simply disappeared, presumably under ONI orders, but not before creating rumors of a squad of mythical heroes who could flip tanks and punk a hole through an armored barricade. Years later, when science had advanced to a certain point, ORION began again, this time topping out at 300 active super soldiers who quickly collapsed the Insurrection in dedicated squads, though overwhelming military force was not enough to bring the outer colonies back into the UNSC entirely. However, while the degeneration was no longer killing ORION soldiers at such an extreme rate, many still suffered far more sever PTSD than average or unusual medical complications. When ORION was shut down in 2506, the remaining 106 soldiers were distributed across the UNSC, still able to serve at least on-par with ODSTs and marines far after most would age out. ORION Project set the ground work for Dr. Catherine Halsey to create the Spartan-II program and its subsequent incarnations, retroactively naming ORION the Spartan-I program.
