Sandling

Physical Description

Sandlings have dark grey skin (from blue and tan, some may be dark brown from black skinned descendants), and are descendants of half-aquatic races, with the other half being humanoid. They have large, slightly frilled ears, similar to an elephant’s (to dissipate heat). They are smaller than most races, because smaller creatures generate less body heat. Additionally, they are covered in wrinkles (also to dissipate heat). Their fingers, feet, and other appendages are slightly webbed, because of their aquatic ancestry, which ended up being good, as it allows them to dig through sand. They have gills on the sides of their necks, which don’t work anymore, as they evolved to be land dwelling, but have some use in allowing them to breathe better. They re-evolved their haw so that they can better keep dust out of their eyes while maintaining visibility.

History

When Broadbarrel was scorched, many creatures were forced to flee underground, and then emerged to see Broadbarrel as how it is today. When humans, elves, halflings, dwarves, and other creatures first came to Broadbarrel and bred with it’s inhabitants, forming half-aquatic creatures, the descendants of Sandlings were born, slowly evolving to become their modern race.

Society

Sandlings live in nomadic tribes that wander the desert for survival. They don’t tend to one alignment very much, but like kobolds, their reliance on the tribe makes them tend towards law. They fairly low key when it comes to life and take it slow like an elf would, the difference being the fact that elves have a long lifespan while sand longs just have a low metabolism so that they don’t burn themselves from the inside out which leads to them perceiving things as fast as they act things: slow. They also call anybody younger than them “child” or “my child” for some reason.

Sandling Names

Sandlings have naming schemes similar to that of tritons, but much more fluid and natural sounding. The “s”that ends the male names is replaced with a “z” to do sound more fluid too. Most Sandlings have surnames that of their profession and tribe name. Ex. An herbalist in a tribe called Duni has the surname “Herbaduni.”

Male: Keraz, Molez, Nailz, Vodz, Zuniz, Soruz, Deliz, Jimaz

Female: Otain, Shalen, Laren, Wolen, Aren, Belen, Duthen, Felon
