An orphan by the age of 16, Yamcha survived in the wastelands of the Diablo Desert, surviving alongside his companion Puar by stealing from passersby, honing his martial arts in the process, mastering the blade and developing his somewhat-legendary Wolf Fang Fist. One day, he ambushed three unsuspecting tourists. While the first two prepared to give up their money and capsules, the third challenged him to a fight. Despite having the boy, who bore a strange monkey tail and the name Goku, through boulders and ruined buildings and having him on the ropes, he fled the scene in embarrassment after realizing he was being watched by Bulma. After finding out their plans to collect the dragon balls, he attacked them the next morning, though Goku's weakness revealed itself to be hunger as the now-fed boy thoroughly thrashed him. After tailing them for a while, his intent transformed from greed to affection, ultimately joining them when they were attacked by Monster Carrot. Becoming an official member, he finally ultimately overcame his cowardice by rescuing Bulma, Oolong, and Puar from the combined threat of Pilaf's castle and Goku's terrifying Oozaru form. Finally getting together with Bulma, he wished Goku adieu before training to prove his strength to the young boy during the next World Martial Arts Tournament. |
