Design Guides

Hey there Marasmusine. I recently created the 5e Feat Design Guide and the 5e Epic Boon Design Guide. I know they're a little sparse at the moment, but could you take a look at them and add some insight? SirSprinkles (talk) 22:53, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Inserting pictures

Hey mara ive been wondering how does one properly insert a picture into a page? Bannanameds (talk) 13:47, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

{{5e Image|center|link to image|caption}}
The link can be a wikilink for an image uploaded to dandwiki, or an external link.
If you upload an image, please respect whatever license it is under. If you use an external link, please make sure the target page is hosting the image with respect to its license, and attribute the artist in the caption. Marasmusine (talk) 15:05, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Archiving

How do you archive discussions on your talk page? Bannanameds (talk) 20:02, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Create a page in your userspace (e.g. User:Bannanameds/Archive 1). Copy over what you want to archive. Marasmusine (talk) 20:35, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

How? Bannanameds (talk) 20:44, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

  1. Go to the edit screen of your talk page.
  2. Move your mouse cursor to the start of the text you want to copy.
  3. Hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse cursor to the end of the text you want to copy.
  4. Hold down the right mouse button and from the menu select "Cut" (or on your keyboard press Ctrl + X)
  5. Click "Save page"
  6. In the search box (to the left), type in the name of your archive page, click "Go", then click the "create" tab at the top the screen (or you can use the link I made for you above)
  7. In the edit box press the right mouse button and from the menu select "Paste" (or on your keyboard press Ctrl + V)
  8. Click "Save page"
  9. Optionally go back to your talk page and add a wikilink to this newly created archive.

Re: Images

Sorry, I wasn't exactly thinking about that stuff, I'll try to get more familiar with it for any images I upload in the future...

I replaced the one image with one I found on wikipedia's commons for now.

thanks!

Magic the Gathering in D&D

Hey mara i just had a completley insane idea. Magic the Gathering decks as spellcasting in D&D. something like a deck of illusions or deck of many things. Bannanameds (talk) 16:37, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

I say it's insane alright. If we allow Magic the Gathering, why not allow Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon decks. In fact, why not allow Huntik oc Chaotic Decks. --209.97.85.48 19:10, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Well i suppose your right. At this point though im just fitting the color/mana mechanics into the 5e setting. The deck mechanic is going to be done by next week probably. Probably. The whole thing could take more than a month. Bannanameds (talk) 22:38, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Harry Potter

Has anyone tried to do a 5e campaign setting based upon Harry Potter? --209.97.85.48 19:13, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

I (Cedric) have been working on integrating some of that. The thing is, the wizard class if very different and it's not a good match with existing D&D spellcasting. So I'm also re-vamping the wizard class (for a homebrew v6) that will integrate many of the great lessons from that world. Cedric (talk) 22:50, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
You could base the wizard archetypes on the Hogwarts houses(Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin). --Redrum 16:49, 12 July 2017 (MDT)

In Regards to Anarmors

I've eagerly been watching this Race be edited and decided to see if there is anyway I could help it along as I always had an affinity for their concept and was saddened by the recent "Vandalism" on it's page the sessions will be coming around in a moth or so, so I would enjoy giving feedback on how the Race preforms; but in the meantime was there anything that you or the other curators of the page needed assistance work shopping? TargetLost (talk) 04:38, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Lost Dragon

Did a quick fix. Not sure if it is what you meant but it should scratch the itch.

Invitation to review

I really like your work and would appreciate your feedback on a feat I wrote. The feat is named "Magical Striker" Thanks if you have the time! P.S. it's a 5e combat feat.

Evolution

Is it possible, to create a race that can shift through subraces at the DM's discretion? ShiroYami (talk) 08:12, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

A "subrace" is a set of traits that the player chooses at character creation. If they can change, then it's not a meaningful choice.
You could have a set of traits that can change, but don't call it a "subrace". I also advise against including ability score changes, as recalculating all the secondary statistics is a pain. Marasmusine (talk) 08:18, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
Ok I wanted to do something like trait changing in anyways so it's good. 105.186.215.72 08:21, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Revenant Missile Launcher

Hey Marasmusine. Someone performed some minor vandalism at Revenant Missile Launcher (5e Equipment) and I reverted it. Can I do that, considering I'm a player in your current campaign in the setting where it belongs? SirSprinkles (talk) 23:41, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes of course, thanks. Marasmusine (talk) 07:56, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Anthromal race 5E

I really needed that, I literally have a new player wanting to play a fox beastfolk, and that page was the one I was using for my campaign setting. Are there any archives of it?

I have temporarily restored Anthromals (5e Race). Please make a copy. Marasmusine (talk) 16:14, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

Half-Vampire race

Hi Maramusine, I noticed that you deleted the talk page of Half-Vampire (5e Race) with the reason that it is the talk of a deleted page, but the main page is still around. Just thought I should mention it. --Geodude671 (talk) 01:06, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

I must have herp derped, thanks. Marasmusine (talk) 07:47, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Your cool race-review system

Hi Marasmusine, a while ago I saw you had reviewed a race using a system whereby every trait had a value, and the aim was to have a total value of 4.5 for a truly balanced race. If you have the time, would you be so kind as to send me a copy of the system you use? I'd like to compare new races I make to it.

-AngelsAndAarakocra, 19:58

Hello, it's at 5e Race Design Guide#Marasmusine's Meter. If you'd like me to go through one of your races applying it step-by-step, let me know. Marasmusine (talk) 21:25, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Brilliant!

-AngelsAndAarakocra, 6:45

Dread Wraith still in the works?

Hey Mara!

I noticed that you have a monster in your "In the Works" section named Dread Wraith (5e Creature). Is there anything in particular that still needs to be done with that particular creature? I'd be interested in helping out with that, depending on what the lingering issue is. Clockwerk66 (talk) 18:33, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

I'd be willing to help as well. --Geodude671 (talk) 19:39, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

??? --Geodude671 (talk) 19:39, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes, thank-you, it's actually the "dread specter" that's currently redlinked that needs doing. It should be a truly horrid version of the 5e SRD:Specter of CR somewhere between 10 and 20. It must not have many complex features, as they act as the dread wraith's minions. Marasmusine (talk) 20:00, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
You could try using just regular wraiths? They're threatening enough at high levels that the players would need to pay attention to them, but not so strong that they would easily overwhelm high-level players in large numbers. --Geodude671 (talk) 22:09, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Well maybe, but I still want the CR to be higher. There aren't going to swarms of them. And wraiths themselves can make specters. Marasmusine (talk) 07:34, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Well, since you're looking for a higher-CR Specter, I've gone ahead and made a CR 12 "Dread Specter" in Homebrewery (http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/r1bHuGqh-Z). If you'd like, you can use my first-draft statblock, and make whatever changes you see fit to it to better suit what you're actually looking for. Clockwerk66 (talk) 19:04, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll take a look! Marasmusine (talk) 19:20, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
No problem! Hope it helps you take at least one thing off of your "In the Works" list. :) Clockwerk66 (talk) 19:22, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

So...what do you think of my dread spectre Mara? Is it at least close to what you're looking for? Clockwerk66 (talk) 10:43, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

The link didn't work :) It says "Can't get that". Marasmusine (talk) 10:48, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Not a problem. Just emailed you a .png of the statblock now. Clockwerk66 (talk) 14:23, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

D&D Wiki Magazone Content Submission Admission

Hey, Mara, I was wondering if it's too late to submit an ooze-themed 5e equipment for the magazine? Do I just post it on the issue page, the discussion page, here, or what? I wanted to submit Ochilles' Heels (5e Equipment) for potential admission. How do I go about that?--GamerAim (talk) 21:59, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes, you can add it to the list on the front page. I got a bit burned out on the magazine, due to a lack of help with 3.5e. I'm tempted to dump it and make it 5e only, but one of the positive comments about past magazines is that it was multi-edition. What to do. 22:27, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Is it a problem with finding or reviewing 3.5e/4e content? I can try to help, but I don't think you should try and force 3.5e content if you can't find it. Just do whatever gets stuff found for it.--GamerAim (talk) 23:56, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Reaper

Hey, you deleted my race and told me to make it in classes? But it wasn't a class, it was a race, so I don't understand why you wanted me to put it in classes.

I'd appreciate it if you could possibly give me back the page, since I worked hard on it and you just erased the whole thing. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Theqwertyup7 (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts.

I didn't see the race before it was deleted, so take this with a grain of salt, but I imagine Mara perceived the Reaper to be more about what you do than who you are. In that case a class would be more appropriate. — Geodude671 (talk | contribs)‎ . . 17:47, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
What was the name/link of the race? I can look into it if Mara doesn't restore it first.--GamerAim (talk) 18:47, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
I dug through the deletion log all the way back to 2014 and couldn't find anything resembling a "Reaper" race. — Geodude671 (talk | contribs)‎ . . 19:06, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
I did misread it as a class rather than a race, because we already have so many reaper classes. I guess now we can have a reaper reaper.
It's not that I deleted the page: you overwrote a disambiguation page and I reverted it.
The content is still there in the page history.
Here
Please use the "add new" link at 5e Races so that the correct template, formatting and categories are used. Marasmusine (talk) 21:17, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. Sorry I got upset, I just couldn't find the page.--Theqwertyup7 (talk) 22:36, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

That's okay, I didn't explain well enough. Marasmusine (talk) 22:46, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Assasin

About the assasin what do you think would be okay? i made it so that the rouge needs another stealth check so its harder for him to stay hidden but if he manage to stay hidden and to find a good place to hit he gains a reward of dmg but how much do you think would be good ? half you sneack atack dmg ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thornack (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts.

Personally I think it would be better if it were more inclusive i.e. not just good for rogues. Perhaps if it granted proficiency in the Stealth skill? SirSprinkles (talk) 21:13, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
I'm not really sure, I'm a bit bored of feats that deal moar damage. People keep making shadowy sneaky stabby feats. Look, here's another, Silent Kill(5e Feat). That's not very good either.
I would change the name. "Assassin" is the name of a rogue archetype. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Marasmusine (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts.
Why can't you just use the Skulker feat? — Geodude671 (talk | contribs)‎ . . 22:52, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Marasmusine, I spotted someone asking to join on the talk page. Have you seen that?

First Angels ~ Im back

Hi, I created the First Angels race you commented on a while ago suggesting I add references or footnotes. I've added references (as I couldn't figure out footnotes) and would like you to check if its been done correctly and if so to lock the page. I'd also like to thank both you and Green Dragon for suggesting improvements and reverting the page to former versions after it was badly edited. Heres what I hope is a link, First Angels (3.5e Race). "Alexus 20:19, 10 June 2017 (UTC)"

Sniper, Variant

Sorry for the hassle. For the record, that other Sniper isn't showing up on the Homebrew Prestige Class list. That's the only reason I took the time to make one, to be honest. -Ah, thanks, and again, sorry for the hassle. Hopefully I'll have this one finished and tweaked soon.

Class changes

If you could do me a favor and not change classes that don't need changed, I would appreciate it. I noticed on your page that you are extremely busy, thus, it follows that you shouldn't have time to ruin other people's ideas simply because you don't like them. Adding simple adjustments is fine, but I have seen you entirely rewrite the structure of classes on a whim, which makes me think you have more time than you know what to do with. I appreciate that you are trying to fix things that are broken, but the vast majority of the time they don't need complete overhauls, merely fine tuning adjustments. Thank you.

Could you do me a favor and tell me what class you are talking about? I'm in the dark here.
Furthermore, when you submit content to this site you are releasing it under a license that allows others to change it. As it says on every edit page: " If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here." Marasmusine (talk) 16:47, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I can't even find out by looking at your history, since this is your only edit. I don't recall doing any class "complete overhauls" recently. Marasmusine (talk) 16:57, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

3.5e feats

Was there ever a Craft Living Construct posted on this site? --209.97.85.48 23:40, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Not as far as I can tell. 08:22, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
I like the idea of a Craft Living Construct Feat. It would allow you to "create" Warforged offspring. --Redrum 13:50, 1 July 2017 (MDT)
Actually, I'm gonna disagree. Remember that feats are optional, they might not be being used at all. It follows that if the campaign allows the creation of living constructs, it needs to be done without a feat.
In Eberron, a "creation forge" was used to create warforged, which sounds like a big magic item to me (also compare with the manual of golems) Marasmusine (talk) 14:15, 1 July 2017 (MDT)
Oh, you said 3.5e. Nevermind then whatever. Marasmusine (talk) 14:19, 1 July 2017 (MDT)
I wrote that I liked the idea of the feat. I didn't write that I was going to use it. --Redrum 16:39, 5 July 2017 (MDT)

5e Gemstones

Is it possible to MAKE a 5 GP gemstone using Glassblower's tools and volcanic glass? --209.97.85.48 23:40, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello, fellow wikian! I guess that's up to your local DM's discretion - if he/she allows it, yes, you may; if not, you can't. Even then, crafting is specified in SRD, under "Downtime Activities". According to the rule, if you want to craft a 5 gp worth of something, you must pay 2 gp and 5 sp for it.
This is just my personal opinion, but crafting for the sake of making money is best to be discouraged. If a player is allowed to make money without going out adventure, his/her motivation for adventures might be decayed, as I have experienced with one of my players. --WeirdoWhoever (talk) 23:46, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
If you are making gemstones to earn a living, this is abstracted into the "Practicing a Profession" downtime activity (PHB p. 187)
If you are making a one-off, you use the "Crafting" downtime activity (PHB p. 187), as WierdoWhoever says. If the player already has the volcanic glass, then the supplies are already paid for. See the PHB for how long this takes and what lifestyle you can support.
However, since you are making a gemstone, and not a bottle, you should be proficient with jeweler's tools, not glassblower's tools. Marasmusine (talk) 08:18, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
Marasmusine, I didn't think about jeweler's tools. Thanks for that point. Mostly, I was wondering if you could (create) gemstones. Making a one-off (or several one-off) was an idea (sorta) to get a enough gems for a "bribe" for a minor official. --209.97.85.48 13:15, 1 July 2017 (MDT)
209.97.85.48, was that gemmaking deal inspired by that Mount St. Helen's gem deal(Helenite)? --Redrum 16:42, 5 July 2017 (MDT)

/* Servant of the Gods */

Thank you so much for your input, I'm going to continue to attempt to change it until it is able to be balanced. I admit that a lot of the class is very wishy washy at the moment, and I am very welcome to any assistance or criticism that anyone that knows this game as well as you has to give me. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 107.77.215.233 (talkcontribs) . Well let's not step on each other's toes, please let me continue with it. I will make notes on the talk page there. Marasmusine (talk) 07:30, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Template:5e Class Features 5 Levels

Hello Mara, I know you're busy with admin works, but I would like to ask for a small request. It's on the 5e Special Classes template, namely the Template:5e Class Features 5 Levels. The template does not show any prerequisites or class descriptions for five-level classes. For instance, the Arcanist (5e Class) page does not list any prerequisites and class description on the 5e Special Classes list, even when it has one in its code.

Oh, and while I'm at it, I would like to ask for another small request. I found that for five- and ten-level class template, the Ability Score Improvement class feature is often obsolete, but the current template still assues that all classes have ASI on 4th and 8th level, leaving a rather disturbing comma in front of the class feature table. Can you please check it out and modify it a bit? --WeirdoWhoever (talk) 11:35, 25 June 2017 (MDT)

I've been meaning to sort that out, now you've forced my hand, I'll take a look. Marasmusine (talk) 12:18, 25 June 2017 (MDT)
I've sorted the comma out.
Prerequisites are not part of "class features", they should be displayed above like they are with the 10-level prestige classes. Marasmusine (talk) 12:26, 25 June 2017 (MDT)

Spell Design

How does one balance a spell in 5th edition? I don't mean simple ones like damage dealing, restoration, or protection. (I can figure that out by looking at damage ranges per spell level and following precedent) I'm talking about spells that add new practical functions to the Magic system. Examples include:

  • Creating whole new planes from scratch.
  • Interacting with the literal souls of living creatures as objects.
  • Actual time travel.
  • Aging creatures, draining youth, etc.
  • Interfering with the action economy and initiative.

I want to be able to expand what magic can be used to do from time to time, but I have no idea how these things are made. I've never been a fan of D&D magic, so I always just left it as-is, but 5e has a very limited repertoire of effects, dominated primarily by tangible power spells, like damage outputs and heals. The DMG is essentially useless for advice in this regard. --Kydo (talk) 16:36, 27 June 2017 (MDT)

It's hard, right? :) I can only try and compare the effects with existing spells.
With the "exploration" effects, it's a case of asking yourself when you expect it to be introduced to players, and this goes all the way back to 1e: for example, flight at 5th level, outer planes at 13th level, ethereal plane at 17th level, astral plane at 18th level.
So creating a new plane will depend on what's going in it. Spellcasters can create "demiplanes" with 8th-level spells (demiplane, maze) that serve one specific function, so I'd imagine something more fleshed out is going to be a 9th-level spell.
If time travel can change something that's already happened, this is a bit like wish.
If aging a creature can incapacitate or kill it with old age, disregarding how many hit points it has, that might be on the level of flesh to stone if it happens over several turns (with a saving throw), or like a power word' if there's no saving throw.
Haste grants an extra (limited) action. Marasmusine (talk) 02:28, 28 June 2017 (MDT)
So I've spent some time thinking about what level these spells might be, and I realize that's not the same as "balancing" them. I would have to take things on a case-by-case basis. Marasmusine (talk) 02:30, 28 June 2017 (MDT)

Ebon Blade

Whoever wrote it to begin with took the original concept idea from D&D 2 and butchered it... ill put explenations and notes in brackets Memory serves me well it should be:

Weapon, Death Knight only, given at induction (Bonded to Death Knight)

This blade was created in the great runeforges of the Death Knights.

On the hilt of the sword, it reads "Woe to any Fiendish or Undead creature that touches this blade," in Celestial and Abyssal.

An Ebon Longsword does 2d6 slashing (one handed), extra 1d10 versatie (using both hands to use)

This weapon can only be wielded by a Death Knight.

When someone with a evil alignment tries to pick up this weapon, they take 3d6 Radiant damage and they are unable to lift it.

Against fiends and undead, this sword does an extra 3d6 radiant damage.

This weapon has 10 charges,

As an action you can expend 1 charge to give advantage of +5 on attacks against Undead and Fiends for the following hour, while imposing disadvantage of +5 to AC on attacks made by a fiend or undead creature against the wielder.

(Just explain this part here, you sacrifice 5 of your own AC to get +5 on your chance to hit the monster, usually only good for those very tank monsters that are hard to hit.)

(Example.. Fiend has 21 AC, your total roll to hit was only 18, you activate sword effect to take your ac from 22 to 17 (22AC - 5AC = 17AC on Deathknight) to raise your hit by 5 to garentee hits. (18 hit + 5 hit = 23 hit, goes from a miss or a parry to a hit and damage the monster. easier wy to see it is you activte an ability that lets you Leeroy Jenkins against undead or fiends)

As a bonus action, you can expend a charge to activate the hilt for an hour and any ally that starts their turn in a 15 foot radius gains 2d6+2 hitpoints at the start of their turn.

It regains 2d4+2 expended charges every day at dawn. (so morning) --121.215.14.214 You can include your signature with four tildes(~).

Hello, fellow wikian! I'm not Mara, but from what I understand, this comes from Ebon Blade, right? I'll leave my comments on the talk page, you can find it there. --WeirdoWhoever (talk) 18:12, 29 June 2017 (MDT)
All the errors I mentioned in the deletion proposal are still there in your description. Marasmusine (talk) 01:48, 30 June 2017 (MDT)

New Weapons

Yea, hey, sorry 'bout all of that. However, the source I've gotten this from: http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/ryxzmHAmx considers these weapons of a mundane nature(Relatively). They've simply got a new property added to them called "Trick" which causes the weapons -- as I'm sure you've noticed by now -- to transform. I will admit that some have some form of magical transformation, but most others seem to be of a mechanical sort. I was just porting these weapons to the wiki so that other individuals could have more choices of martial weapons to choose from. Sorry if that caused any inconvenience.

Okay. Giving them a cost is probably campaign-specific. Did you get the author's permission to copy them over? Marasmusine (talk) 16:15, 30 June 2017 (MDT)

I did not. I just figured the author wouldn't have minded if I moved his creations over to this wiki due to its popularity. If that's a problem, you're more than welcome to remove them from the Martial Weapon's List.

FallenStar's Request: Blade Mage of questionable balance...?

I hopped onto the chat room to see FallenStar (They created an account recently for this issue, so they don't have a page yet) having issue with the Blade Mage, citing it as "Unbalanced." They weren't sure when any admin was going to show up to bring this up, so I told them I was going to do it for them, as they had to leave soon.

Anyways, since they, as a DM had issue with the balance, could you look at the Blade Mage class and see if the balance is questionable?

I apologize if I'm bothering you. Nightmares are dreams too... (talk) 01:50, 1 July 2017 (MDT)

There was a suggestion on the talk page to roll it back, so I've done that. It's still got too many features. Marasmusine (talk) 02:19, 1 July 2017 (MDT)
