Formatting

Syntax can be very difficult, and if you need help a good place to start is Help:Editing on Wikipedia (or even their Introduction page). This will explain basic wiki formatting and should provide quite a few useful links that explain more specific areas of wiki formatting. Help:Portal also provides detailed explanation of information important specifically to this community.

About Giants[edit]

Hi. I've noticed you've been editing just about every giant available, including some I made. I like some of the ideas but I've noticed you seem to change them quite often... perhaps you could create some giants of your own to put these abilities into? --Dinomaster337 (talk) 13:23, 9 May 2023 (MST)

Hyrule Spells[edit]

Why did you remove every polymorph and polymorph-adjacent spell from the Hyrule setting? I've replaced them, but I wanted to know what your motivations for doing so were, in case they ought to say removed. --Woahluigi (talk) 16:27, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Due to how called shots have been changed, they can only be made with stamina points (with a few exceptions). For this reason, I cannot think of any possibility where a character can both cast polymorph and have stamina points (such points would be removed due to their statistics being replaced by that of the beast. The only exception to this would be shifter, but that has been specifically balanced and is not even relevant, since they transform by means others than such spells).
I am deeply troubled by the idea of removing spells simply because you do not like them or want to deal with them in your own games. I suggest that you merely tell your players this, or even create a variant rule that lays it all out. But you should not remove spells from an entire setting (that you do not control) merely because of your personal distaste. --Woahluigi (talk) 05:43, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
Hey I saw that you removed the rest of your changes to Hyrule spells. I didn't mean to stifle your innovation, I was just focused on the singular issue of removing spells. Adding or changing spells won't be an issue in the vast majority of cases, so if you think you've got a good idea for one of them, go right ahead! --Woahluigi (talk) 06:37, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
(To be honest, I'm the only one that regularly edits the Hyrule setting, so I can't be pushing anyone away from it if I ever want it to be in a near-complete state.)

Shapechange Redesigned (5e Variant Rule)[edit]

I wanted to let you know that I've partially read through this variant rule, but I'm not currently able to go in and propose exact edits myself (I just don't have the time unforunately). However, here's some feedback that addresses what most stuck out to me:

1. Make sure wording is in a 5e-style. This can be a bit hard to nail down, but most of 5e is sort of written the same way, and I think its important for 5e homebrew to be written in this way as well. If you want help capturing this style, then look up the exact wording for a spell or ability that functions similarly (I use 5etools for this), and check the official wording.
2. Rules text should be clear and unambiguous. Only use wording that has an explicit mechanical explanation (such as "stunned" instead of "must spend one turn to rest"), or wording that is so clear that it could not be easily misconstrued. Specifically, I would avoid leaving things up the whims of the DM, as this bog the game down as the DM has to quickly rule on something they might not be prepared for, and players can really hate it when the DM rules differently than they would have. Better to establish clear rules
  • Specifically, I don't like double-effects (Ex: ...must spend one turn to rest. Or it must succeed a Constitution saving throw...) In this case, its hard to tell who makes the choice of either resting a turn or making a saving throw, so I'd just replace it with something like "...must make a Constitution saving throw or become stunned until the start of their next turn" or something.
  • Also, having three different hazards caused by different effects is confusing. I'd replace all of them with "Polymorph Fatigue" or something, where once a character becomes (willingly) polymorphed, they cannot transform again until they complete a long rest. Or if they do, they suffer some kind of punishment (maybe a Constitution save or they gain a level of exhaustion).
  • Finally, some things should just be formatted better. I think you should create a custom stat block for each polymorph form and then link it to the spell. It would give so much more space to explain abilities, AC, HP, etc. Avoid run-on sentences (when possible), use paragraph breaks (br/ surrounded by <>) when needed, and sort the headers of your rule by importance (by adding more = on either side of a header's text).
3. Add in links to appropriate pages. Some common examples (check the edit history to see how to do these) are Strength which works for all 6 abilities, saving throw which works for general 5e rules, and stunned for conditions. There are others as well, but you can always link a page directly using this format: Help (What you want to show up goes after the bar)
4. If you want any more help besides these guidelines, check out the official D&D wiki discord server (Found here: https://discord.gg/EnsRxSV). If you want to go down this route, you can link your rule in the 5e channel, as there's usually someone online in there who'd be happy to give you their honest opinion, and maybe even help out directly.
