Category changes[edit]

Hey Geodude, I removed that category because it unprettys the breadcrumbs when users don't input the category they want. Seems easier for users to add TO the categories than editors to tidy pages up because the category was untouched. Open to ideas. BigShotFancyMan (talk) 11:30, 15 June 2018 (MDT)

Users don't enter a breadcrumb for it, the category is automatically updated to whatever weapon type users enter for a page(for example simple ranged weapons on Blowgun, Variant (5e Equipment)). I asked an admin to revert the edit because it just make 100+ pages not appear on the dpl's of 5e Traditional Nonmagical Weapons, 5e Anachronistic Weapons, Incomplete 5e Weapons, ect. because it removed the weapon's type category.--Blobby383b (talk) 12:22, 15 June 2018 (MDT)
So if users don't put in a weapon type, then the category doesn't update? Causing that ugliness to occur that I was trying to avoid? BigShotFancyMan (talk) 12:28, 15 June 2018 (MDT)
Yes, if users don't put in a weapon type, then it just shows a blank category([[category:]]) as shown when you create a new weapon on 5e Weapons and don't fill out its category. This is how all the equipment templates work and how all equipment pages are properly categorized. If you were to blank the type when creating a magical weapon for example you would again get a blank category([[Category:]]).--Blobby383b (talk) 12:43, 15 June 2018 (MDT)
Alrighty then. Sorry for that Blobby and I will add weapon types when they're missing vs deleting the category. BigShotFancyMan (talk) 12:48, 15 June 2018 (MDT)
It's alright, I just wanted to be sure you understood why the template is the way it is. Either way, good job on sorting all those uncategorized pages, though I would imagine it seems like they never end.--Blobby383b (talk) 12:56, 15 June 2018 (MDT)

So, I was skeptical because I felt automated categories could create a problem somehow but didn't know. Well, I've found an issue or at least it is something I don't know how to "fix". User:TheRealSlimShady placed an artifact on their userspace using the artifact preload. The item shows up on lists because it has categories do to the preload or automatedness of categories. Are there any ideas how to remove the categories? BigShotFancyMan (talk) 07:14, 30 June 2018 (MDT)

I see three options.
  1. You could add Category:Supplement to that page, and pages like it.
  2. Someone could edit the relevant dpl to exclude the namespaces "User," "Talk," and "User talk." I am relatively unfamiliar with dpls but I imagine namespace exclusion is something that could be done. I could be wrong with that guess, though.
  3. I could basically make a "nocat" parameter for this template. If any text is filled in that parameter, any of the normal categories would be excluded. It wouldn't affect any existing pages, but any page which had something like "|nocat=etc" would not be automagically categorized.

I feel the second option is best but like you I am not a DPL guru. I'll be patient though. BigShotFancyMan (talk) 19:36, 30 June 2018 (MDT)
I future proofed almost all of the equipment DPL's so that users can now create items on their pages and on talk pages(if they need to?) and it doesn't show on equipment lists(for example things like bigshots lightsabers and the piece of equipment on User:TheRealSlimShady's user page). I just need 5e Mounts and Vehicles and 5e Magic Items by Rarity lists' DPLs to be updated to include notnamespaces like this revision.--Blobby383b (talk) 13:38, 1 July 2018 (MDT)
