Ever since he was four, Krillin was a student of Orin Temple, where he trained in martial arts alongside the other monks. The stronger students, effectively everyone, constantly bullied him, leading to him leaving to seek out the legendary Turtle Hermit in order to get revenge, and maybe incidentally a girlfriend. After seeking out Roshi and being accepted by bribing him with magazines to his liking, as well as giving Launch political refuge on his island, he determined that his classmate, Son Goku, was below him, only to be blown out of the water by his physical might. After eight months of the Turtle School's grueling training, he gradually learned to see Goku as a friend, to avoid underhandedness, and to value hard work and competition. When the day of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament came, Krillin eliminated his old bullies in the preliminaries, taking some pleasure in it, but treating the fight as a martial artist should. While his chances looked grim in the first round, being incapacitated by Bacterian, he quickly remembered his lack of a nose thanks to Goku and one-shot his opponent. In the semi-finals, he was paired against the mysterious Jackie Chun, who had easily eliminated Yamcha in the round prior. Despite being able to save himself from a handful of close ring-outs, he was ultimately defeated by his disguised master. After some close calls with the Red Ribbon Army, as well as being defeated by Fangs during their bout at Baba's Palace, Krillin felt prepared to take on the challengers at the next tournament.
