This equipment is best utilized with the Spell Points variant rule (DMG pg. 288), or an equivalent.

Staff, uncommon

A more powerful version of an ice rod, this staff features 7 blue gemstones arranged in an intricate pattern. A spellcaster holding this staff can use it as a Spellcasting Focus. While holding this staff, you can use it to perform one of the following attacks:

  • Melee Weapon Attack. You swing the staff, making an attack roll (using your Strength modifier) against a creature within your reach. On a hit, the target takes 1d4 + your Strength modifier bludgeoning damage plus 1 cold damage. If you wield this staff in two hands, its bludgeoning damage die increases to 1d6.
  • Ranged Spell Attack (costs 1 mp). You loosen from the staff a blast of ice and make an attack roll against a creature or object within 120 feet. On a hit, the target takes 3d8 cold damage. You can add your spellcasting ability modifier to the attack roll of this attack. If you do not have a spellcasting feature, you add your Intelligence modifier instead. A flammable object hit by this attack ignites if it isn't being worn or carried.
  • Melee Spell Attack (costs 1 mp). With a burst of frost, a long hammer of ice forms from the head of the staff. While the hammer persists, the staff now deals 1d6 cold and 1d6 slashing damage on a hit, and you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of melee attacks using this weapon. If you do not have a spellcasting feature, you use your Intelligence instead. After 1 minute, the hammer disappears.

Frigid Aura. This rod extinguishes unprotected non-magical flames within 30 feet of it. Additionally, a creature holding or carrying the rod does not need to make saving throws against extreme heat (see chapter 5 of the DMG).
