Jonathan and Danny alongside Dio and the stone mask, [Source]

Dio was born in 1867 to Dario Brando, an abusive alcoholic, and his wife, a kind woman with no other option, in the Ogre Street slum of London. After his mother was worked to death by his father, Dio's life was devoid of kindness, becoming an intelligent conman and turning to an inevitable life of crime, even poisoning his father to death as revenge. In his father's final days, he presented Dio with a letter, proof of the life debt George Joestar believed he owned him, and demanded that he pull the Joestar fortune out from under him. As his first course of action, Dio attempted to systematically ruin every aspect of his new adoptive brother, Jonathan Joestar's life; killing his dog Danny, manipulating his friends into leaving him, and even attacking his girlfriend in order to cheat him out of the family fortune via depression.

After a fight revealed Jonathan's true strength as an unbreakable man in both body and spirit, the two held an uneasy, but friendly relationship for 7 years, even becoming the joint stars of the college rugby team at Hugh Hudson Academy, where he majored in law. However, it was during this time that Jonathan discovered Dario's fate and drew connections to George's current state; proof of Dio's plot. When Jonathan left the house to acquire evidence, Dio wandered the streets of Liverpool drunk, disgusted with his turn to alcohol but with no other solution to his despair. Murdering a heckling passerby with the stone mask he had planned on killing Jonathan with in a staged research accident, Dio discovered its true purpose, to turn humans into vampires. Only being saved by the rising sun, Dio hatched an even more devilish plan. When Jonathan confronted Dio when he returned home, he feigned remorse before attempting to stab Jonathan, instead finding purchase in his own father's chest, and rejected his humanity, becoming a newborn vampire.
