Detect Elements (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
2nd-level Divination (ritual) | |
Casting time: | 1 action |
---|---|
Range: | Self |
Components: | V, S, M (a pair of L-shaped rods, or a forked twig) |
Duration: | Concentration, up to 10 minutes. |
When you cast this spell, choose air, earth, fire, or water. For the duration, you can sense the size, direction and location of occurrences of that element within 30 feet of you. This spell cannot determine what form the element takes- for example, detected water could be mud, ice, or steam and detected earth could be rock, sand, mud, or dirt, but it can detect the presence of incongruities or differences in makeup in an element, such as those caused by ores in earth.
You can use your action to switch what element is detected by this spell.
This spell also detects elemental creatures corresponding to the type of element currently being detected, such as an earth or water elemental, but it does not immediately identify them as such, only noting them as incongruous to a normal inert instance of their element.
The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 inch of common metal or a thin sheet of lead.
At Higher Levels. As you cast this spell at higher levels, you can make finer distinctions between the elements. When you cast this spell at 3rd level or 4th level, the paraelements (ice, magma, ooze, and smoke) are added to the list of elements you can detect. With a 5th-level slot or higher, you can detect quasielements (ash, dust, salt, vacuum, lightning, mineral, radiance, and steam) and the spell is no longer blocked by common metals, only lead.
