Please ask before you change something. That is all. I am of course up for constructive criticism.--Yanied (talk) 18:54, 7 January 2018 (MST)

lifespan[edit]

how long can a grim live for ? my dnd group is blowing their ages up because it's not posted, like 3000 years and stuff. thanks

This is a class, not a race. The age limit depends on race.--Yanied (talk) 20:24, 25 January 2018 (MST)
Yes, but there are class features that remove age, so.... --Anonymous
Ageless death is also one of the first level class features so it should be easy to see then. And when you ask how long something can live for, you usually would ask that of a race more than a class.--Yanied (talk) 13:39, 6 April 2021 (MDT)

Grim Feast[edit]

Is it possible to stack the additional hit points gained with this feature? Something like manipulating these consumed souls to protect yourself instead of just letting them fade away, which would probably be one interpretation to it if we follow the original rules that states the additional hit points disappear after a long rest and are not stackable.

The extra hit points are meant to be temporary. This class is going to get overpowered at this rate with everyone adding unnecessary things to it as it is--Yanied (talk) 14:04, 8 October 2018 (MDT)

death's raiment[edit]

why superior darkvision, it seems more fitting for an emissary of death to have true sight so that he can notice more when claiming souls

Just to prevent possible overpower.--Yanied (talk) 19:57, 15 March 2018 (MDT)
I agree with the first post here. Maybe true sight up to 10 feet, or even 5 would make more sense -Anonymous
Read the 17th level upgrade. There is 30 feet of truesight on the raiment.--Yanied (talk) 13:39, 6 April 2021 (MDT)

"Beginning at 15th Level: The cloak now seems almost-new. Your cloak now provides resistance to the following types of damage: slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning." What if someone already have those three resistances? No bonuses? Become immunity?

Then nothing happens. It's meant to be built around with a set limit. --Yanied (talk) 15:14, 19 August 2018 (MDT)

Not sure what format you’re supposed to use on these but um I think you take 1/4 damage half of half

it’s like Yanied said; nothing happens. You can’t gain resistance twice.   ~BigShotFancyMan   talk   17:40, 11 July 2019 (MDT)
Thanks for catching that, BSFM--Yanied (talk) 22:16, 11 July 2019 (MDT)

Does the dex bonus still apply on top of the deaths raiment ac?

No, the Raiment has its own formula with con and wis.--Yanied (talk) 13:38, 5 August 2020 (MDT)

Pathfinder conversion[edit]

Any ideas for converting this to be compatible with pathfinder?

No idea.--Yanied (talk) 15:48, 15 April 2018 (MDT)

Grim Reaver[edit]

I feel like it shouldn't be able to go into another plane like say in a bag of holding. Cause if it goes far away it returns. I think it should be the same way for bag of holdings.

Well now it has a clause that it won't return from planar shift.--Yanied (talk) 14:07, 8 October 2018 (MDT)

Compliments and Changes[edit]

My compliments on your excellent revision of the Soul Reaper, Variant 2 into something that works better and gets rid of the messy Soul Storage that I had originally created. I made minor changes to the class because I felt that certain things were not addressed such as the age question. Why would Death's emissary die of old age? Death would want them to be out there collecting souls for as long as possible, not dying and having to create another to replace them IMHO. Additionally the flavor of the class is that they were imbued with Death's own powers, Death doesn't die of old age. Second, the flight speed of 25 was too short because the base speed of a medium sized creature is 30, and thus their wings should be of adequate size and strength to carry them as far as they can walk. Changed the cantrip as well because shouldn’t have spells until after level 2. Azagoth (talk) 09:04, 18 May 2018 (MDT)

Thanks for the compliment. Means a lot from the original maker.--Yanied (talk) 13:49, 19 May 2018 (MDT)
Really like how this class is. The scaling robe and weapon is a nice way to balance without subclasses. Kudos BigShotFancyMan (talk) 08:07, 9 July 2018 (MDT)
Thanks--Yanied (talk) 18:27, 9 July 2018 (MDT)

There's an awful lot of non account people changing the page incrementally. How do I petition to get the page locked from that?--Yanied (talk) 15:09, 19 October 2018 (MDT)

{{needsadmin}} with the reason why or User talk:Admin you can post for any admin to see or go to a specific admin's talk page. A list of admins can be found here Special:Listadmins. I recommend the User talk:Admin page. ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 13:54, 31 October 2018 (MDT)
I also thought the last change making the calculation for half vs a quarter wasn't bad. Your thoughts on reverting that? ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 13:57, 31 October 2018 (MDT)
If it's not gonna hurt the balance of the class, then I guess it's ok. I'm a bit paranoid about that.--Yanied (talk) 14:25, 31 October 2018 (MDT)
I don’t know if it would. I didn’t think it was bad, but neither am I saying it’s a good edit. Just asking stuffz. ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 14:57, 31 October 2018 (MDT)

I do miss having the subclass variety. If you ever plan on adding it, a really simple way would be to split the magic uses of the class and the non magic uses into two, just to give it a bit of a direct path, or magical one. But really cool overall. Apothose

Thanks. I don't think I'll be touching on it, but those are good ideas for subclasses in other classes for sure--Yanied (talk) 22:12, 19 February 2019 (MST)

Too much damage[edit]

If you compare the damage that other classes can inflict using consumables for 10 rounds, then the reaper stands out greatly. The reaper sags on damage at 5-6 levels. And it has too high damage at 1-2 and 7+ levels. It would be a good solution to give him necrotic damage like a rogue damage from a hidden attack. Also remove the bonuses associated with a critical hit, and leave only one attack. Try to build a graph of damage of different classes depending on the level, and see for yourself.

I don't think making it like the rogue is necessary nor a good idea since it takes from the class' uniqueness in mechanic. What can be done is shifting the weapon bond and lessening its upgrades to include less.--Yanied (talk) 09:24, 9 March 2019 (MST)

Material component[edit]

It is very strange that there are spells that require a material component, but at the same time the class does not have the ability to use magic focusing.

I don't follow what's strange. There isn't a restriction for them on magic focuses. ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 07:46, 6 March 2019 (MST)

Copied over to Homebrewery[edit]

Since I needed a way to easily edit my own copy of the class (GM is running a campaign with a lot of undead.... thus the reaper's necrotic stuff needed to rework for the it to not be more OP than normal)

I decided to share here the transcribed Homebrewery copy, incase anyone wanted to either print it or if they too needed to make such edits.

https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/jCUpbeEn9dGl (Recommended to read within a chromium based browser, such as Chrome or OperaGX. Firefox has some rendering problems, like Stench of Death's description going off the page)

I didn't change much, primarily the removal of a rogue comma from the feature list, replaced "Improvement" with "Increase" on said feature list when it came to "Ability Increase", and just various personal preference alignments. (Which I'm sure will annoy someone, but it makes it easier to read through the lists)

If there are any errors, let me know. I might not get back right away, but I'll see what I can do when I do see it.

Side note: When the page does get unlocked later this year, probably should remove that rogue comma as well as giving image credits to Andrea Christen ( https://www.andreachristen.com/ ) --Aftcrest (talk) 13:07, 10 February 2021 (MST)

Future Rework[edit]

Going over the class, my notion of balance when I made it was nonexistent. So I am currently working on a rework of it and I will implement it sometime in the future.--Yanied (talk) 13:39, 6 April 2021 (MDT)

It's going to be a few months still before the page is editable anyway, so take your time. Though, I would recommend having the rework as a separate entry. Such as by moving the old one and labeling it something like "Legacy" or having the new one named something to indicate it. There are people that like the broken nature of the class as is for one reason or another. Eitherway, I'm looking forward to a rework. Aftcrest (talk) 11:41, 7 April 2021 (MDT)
I mean, most people can’t edit it yet. Except for admins, like the creator of the page, or the person thinking about reworking the page. --SwankyPants (talk) 11:47, 7 April 2021 (MDT)
Yep, pretty much. I'm not going to make a separate entry just so there is an excuse to keep an overpowered thing on the list where more balanced classes are supposed to be. So if you want to keep this overpowered version, save it for your own uses as a userpage or something. If it is reuploaded, it will be tagged with needsbalance.--Yanied (talk) 12:50, 7 April 2021 (MDT)

Rework Patch Explanation[edit]

Rework is posted. Please give your thoughts on the huge nerfs.

  • Upgrades are now by choice so that it better reflects how the class works without archetypes, yet still offering options.
  • Focal points moved to reaver and raiment, which upgrades are for
  • Spell-level gaining levels cleared so no gaining features at the same time.--Yanied (talk) 14:38, 7 April 2021 (MDT)
