This creature was created as part of the Player Equivalent CR variant rule, and as such does not follow traditional CR. Additionally, it is meant to portray a wide variety of creatures with similar abilities, and is much less specific than typical 5e creatures.

Keen Sense. The beast has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on one sense, as determined by its variant.

ACTIONS

Swipe. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) bludgeoning damage.


Large beasts dominate large swathes of wildlands, being large enough to take down the majority of wildlife alone, but being small enough to breed regularly. Their biggest competition is large packs of medium beasts, and the odd huge or gargantuan creature that wanders into their territory. In megafauna environments, especially those long ago, these creatures are equivalent to small dogs.

Variants

Avaceratops. The beast may make two swipe attacks against the same creature instead of one when it makes an opportunity attack, and its swipe attack may deal either piercing or bludgeoning damage. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Axe Beak. The beast is proficient in Perception, granting it a +2 bonus to Perception checks and a passive Perception of 12. The beast has a climbing speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Carnotaurus. The beast may attempt to grapple a creature as a bonus action immediately after hitting the creature with a swipe attack, the beast's swipe attacks deal either piercing or bludgeoning damage, and its attacks automatically hit a creature it is grappling. Its Keen Sense is smell and touch.

Bear. The beast may cause its swipe attack to deal bludgeoning, slashing, or piercing damage. Immediately after dealing piercing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. The beast has a climbing speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is smell.

Camel. The beast has advantage on saving throws to avoid exhaustion from dehydration. Its Keen Sense is touch.

Constrictor Snake. Immediately after dealing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. The beast has a climbing speed of 30 feet. While grappled in this way, the target is restrained. Its Keen Sense is smell.

Crocodile. The beast has advantage on Stealth checks while within water and can hold its breath for 15 minutes. The beast's swipe attacks to deal piercing damage. Immediately after dealing piercing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. The beast's swipe attack automatically hits creatures it is grappling. The beast has a swimming speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Draft Horse. The beast is not affected by difficult terrain. Its Keen Sense is touch.

Elk. If the beast moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a swipe attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. Its Keen Sense is hearing.

Giant Bat. The beast has a movement speed of 10 feet, a flying speed of 40 feet, and 60 feet of blindsight that can not be used while it is deafened. Its Keen Sense is hearing.

Giant Boar. If the beast moves at least 10 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a swipe attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 3 (1d6) damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Giant Canine. The beast has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the beast's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. Its Keen Sense is hearing and smell.

Giant Eagle. The beast has a movement speed of 10 feet, a flying speed of 40 feet. Immediately after dealing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Giant Fish. The beast can only breath underwater, and has a swimming speed of 40 feet and a movement speed of 5 feet. Immediately after dealing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Giant Goat. The beast is not affected by difficult terrain, and has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws against being knocked prone. Its Keen Sense is touch.

Giant Insect. The beast gains a burrowing speed equal to half its movement speed, and may deal poison damage instead of bludgeoning damage when it uses its swipes. The beast has a climbing speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Giant Lizard. The beast has 30 feet of darkvision, can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check, and has climbing speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is smell.

Giant Octopus. The beast has advantage on Stealth checks while underwater, and can only breath underwater. Immediately after dealing damage with a swipe attack, the beast may initiate a grapple contest as a bonus action. While grappled in this way, the target is restrained. The beast has a climbing speed of 30 feet. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Giant Toad. The beast's swipe attack has a reach of 15 feet, and it deals poison damage. Its Keen Sense is touch.

Lion. If the beast moves at least 10 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a swipe attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 3 (1d6) damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. The beast has advantage on its first attack roll against a creature if at least one of the beast's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Rhinoceros. If the beast moves at least 10 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a swipe attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) damage. Its Keen Sense is touch.

Riding Horse. The beast understands one language, but can not speak, and it has a movement speed of 60 feet. Its Keen Sense is hearing.

Tiger. If the beast moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a swipe attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 11 (3d6) damage. Its Keen Sense is sight.

Utahraptor. The beast's swipe attack deals slashing damage, the beast can make a swipe attack against a prone creature as a bonus action, and the beast can take the Dash action as a bonus action. Its Keen Sense is hearing and smell.
