Jjan (Shard Ne'Vaal Supplement)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Jjan is a small, coastal nation that was formerly a tributary state to Ba Xin. Their ancestors are recorded to be originally from the Karas Plains, with a mix of cultures from Ba Xin. It is also said that some of the Jjanese were contributive to the people who eventually left the continent to settle on Toryu, thus attributing to a similarity between their two languages and cultures, to a certain degree. However, Jjan maintains a distinct and proud culture of people who have resisted many invasions from their more powerful neighbors.

Geography[edit]

Their north side and northwest corner touch the southern cluster of the Rei Iruy Cradle Range. The rest of the nation is surrounded by water, lending to a balanced and temperate climate, replete with four seasons. Towards the mountains are thick forests, while it is relatively flat towards the south, with vast swaths of grasslands and low-hill valleys.

Cuisine[edit]

Situated on a virtual peninsula, Jjan is a nation touched by much of nature's bounty both on land and sea. For the most part, a lot of their foods encapsulate seafood. However, because there are landlocked populations further inland, transportation and preservation of seafood was a crucial component of Jjan's national culinary identity. A variety of fermentation techniques allowed for seafood to reach even the northern mountainous regions of Jjan, where they contribute to the culinary scene in many ways. These dishes are often pungent, since you're fermenting seafood for gods' sakes, and is often an acquired taste by outsiders and even coastal Jjanese. Closer to the water, the seafood is preferred fresh, coupled with a variety of herbs native to both kelp beds and scenic valleys of green.
