At the age of 3, Hinata Hyuga, the eldest daughter of the clan head Hiashi Hyuga, was almost kidnapped by the head ninja of the Hidden Cloud Village in what was supposed to be a peace treaty. When the perpetrator was killed, the village denied all accusations and demanded the body of Hiashi himself as compensation. In his stead, however, they received the body of his twin brother, Hizashi, who volunteered himself to save the clan and ensure the lack of a functioning byakugan due to bearing the branch family's curse seal. This event would heavily separate Hinata and Hizashi's son Neji.

While she was intended to be the next heiress of the clan, her failure in combat against her younger sister Hanabi, particularly from her hesitation to harm her own family, cause Hiashi to disinherit her, focusing on raising Hanabi himself while Hinata was raised by Kurenai, Kiba, and Shino as a member of Team 8. It was in this time that she would fall in love with Naruto Uzumaki, fight Neji in the Chunin Exams, and ultimately regain the respect of her father. As time passed, she would become far more powerful.
