Much like Dante's other homunculi, Envy is a soul pulled from the Gate of Truth after someone tried to bring him back to life, in his case that of Dante and Hohenheim's son who had died of mercury poisoning at 18. Acting as Dante's chief underling, following her orders to fulfill his hatred of humanity and his father. After a long campaign against humanity, he was enraged at being denied the right to kill Hohenheim, though Dante offered the lives of Edward and Alphonse Elric as consolation. After mortally wounding Edward, Alphonse saved his life by sending him through the gate. Seeing his opportunity to still kill Hohenheim, he followed Edward, though the journey through the gate was harder on his body than he expected. Vortex of Souls. When Envy is targeted by detect magic or a similar effect, or contacted by any form of two-way telepathy, the caster hears the screams of every soul inside of him and must succeed a DC 22 Charisma saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. They may retry this saving throw at the end of each of their turns, ending this effect early on a success. Mystically Mundane. Envy can not spend spell slots or Alchemic Stamina. Unaging. Envy does not need to eat, drink, or sleep, and does not age. |

After emerging on the other side of the Gate, Envy's form was torn into that of a great serpent. He was quickly captured by the Thule Society, a post-World War I Nazi organization hellbent on using knowledge extracted from Hohenheim and others from Envy's original world, to pass through the Gate and conquer the world of "Shamballa", even using some of his souls to send a handful of soldiers through the Gate. In the end, through some trickery, Envy would lead to Hohenheim's death as he sacrificed himself, using Envy as a conduit, killing them both, to send Edward through the Gate. |
