Formatting

Syntax can be very difficult, and if you need help a good place to start is Help:Editing on Wikipedia (or even their Introduction page). This will explain basic wiki formatting and should provide quite a few useful links that explain more specific areas of wiki formatting. Help:Portal also provides detailed explanation of information important specifically to this community.

To me, the Dark Arts represent a morally and ethically questionable use of magic that pushes the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in society. Not so much a type of magic, but the intent behind how magic is used.

While not always inherently evil, I could agree, for in game, these practices could be banned or heavily regulated in high population areas due to their potential for harm, corruption, or abuse.

  • Manipulation of Will: Enchantments that rob individuals of their autonomy, such as dominate person or geas, fall under the Dark Arts. Such magic is seen as a violation of personal freedom and dignity.
  • Tampering with Time: Time-altering spells are considered dangerous and reckless, threatening the natural order and balance of the world. Casters who engage in this magic risk catastrophic consequences.
  • Consorting with Malicious Forces: Summoning or bargaining with fiends, demons, or other malevolent entities is considered perilous and corrupting, as it often endangers the caster and the world around them.
  • Sacrificial and Life-Fueled Magic: Any spell fueled by the sacrifice of life—be it the caster's or another's—is condemned as a violation of the sanctity of life.
  • Unnatural Weather Manipulation: Spells that unnaturally manipulate weather on a large scale, such as control weather, are restricted due to their potential to cause widespread destruction or environmental imbalance.
  • Binding of Souls: Practices like soul trapping or the creation of phylacteries are reviled for enslaving or disrupting the eternal rest of the soul.
  • Destructive Magic in Protected Areas: Elemental spells capable of large-scale destruction, such as fireball or earthquake, are forbidden in populated or sacred areas to preserve lives and infrastructure.

These laws and taboos serve as safeguards, protecting society from the dangerous allure of the Dark Arts. Practitioners of these magics are often viewed with suspicion or outright hostility, and in many cultures, they may face exile, imprisonment, or worse. This is an open-ended list, of course.
