Design Note: Good game design prevents analysis paralysis by providing you a limited number of easily digestible options. Anyway, let's do the opposite of that.

This is a tentative expansion of Attire (PSR Supplement). Aligning with 5e SRD:Armor is a lower priority here.

Reduction[edit]

Some armor reduces the damage you take. This reduction can apply to only certain damage types (such as bash or pierce), or damage from certain sources (such as from Falling).

  • For example, if a longbow attack deals 7 pierce damage but you have 5 pierce reduction, you only lose 2 hit points.
  • Damage reduction doesn't stack; if multiple effects reduce the damage you take, only the biggest reduction applies.
  • Resistance happens after reduction and all other modifiers, and that final value is compared to damage threshold (if applicable) or other effects depending solely on the total damage dealt.

Common Attire[edit]

This widely available attire can be easily bought or sold during downtime trade. "Armor" includes any attire that increases defense when worn.

Attire Value Defense Reduction Properties Note
Head
Pointed Hat 5 gold Special Not protective, but the peculiar shape of this witch's hat can help focus magic power.
Cap 20 gold +1 Leather or chitin protects the head, but leaves the face exposed.
Armet 50 gold +1 Steel A knight's helm, featuring a visor that can be raised or lowered. Comfortable, but loose.
Great Helm 100 gold +2 Steel, Special Completely encloses the head in unparalleled protection, but muffles all senses.
Torso
Runic Robes 100 gold Special Famed for use in wizard duels. The runes do nothing to stop solid steel, however.
Leather 20 gold +1 Flexible, but penetrable. Some compromise protection for freedom of movement.
Duelist Vest 150 gold +1 2 pierce Steel Elegant, minimalist armor favoring flexibility, employed by nobles in the sport of fencing.
Brigandine 60 gold +2 Heavy, Steel A coat inlaid with steel plates. Barely resembles armor. Good for keeping a low profile.
Scale Armor 80 gold +2 2 bash, 2 pierce Heavy, Loud Cheaper to make than most heavy armor thanks to a reliance on clay or beast parts.
Hide Armor 120 gold +2 5 bash Heavy Favored by ruffians. Raw beast fur absorbs most blows, but it isn't impervious to blades.
Chain Mail 160 gold +2 5 slash Heavy, Loud, Steel Usually called "mail." Infamously resilient to cuts, but thin weapons can pierce through.
Breastplate 200 gold +2 5 pierce Heavy, Loud, Steel Favored by knights who can afford it. Arrows, spears, and fangs rarely pierce solid steel.
Arms
Claws 20 gold Special Sharp beast claws fix to the glove's backside. Sometimes offense is the best defense.
Vambraces 20 gold +1 Sturdy beast hide embracing the forearms. Can deflect blades in a pinch.
Gauntlets 150 gold +2 Heavy, Steel Steel plates enclose a more flexible glove. The interior lacks steel, to preserve Dexterity.
Legs
Boots 10 gold Sturdy leather footwear. Without at least these, thorns are much bigger threats.
Merfins 100 gold Special Long fins automatically extend when underwater, greatly increasing mobility.
Panther Paws 100 gold 5 Falling Fur boots magically imbued with a cat's grace. Invaluable to aerial fighters.
Sabatons 150 gold +1 Heavy, Loud, Steel Footwear covered in articulating steel plates, paired with greaves that protect the shins.

Uncommon Attire[edit]

Once you reach 5th level, you've made the connections to buy this attire easily during downtime trade. Coming across any at a lower level is rather fortunate.

Attire Value Defense Reduction Properties Note
Arms
Brick Bracers 10 gold +2 Heavy, Special Surprisingly dense clay. It feels like a wall of bricks is wraps around each forearm.
Torso
Stalwart Stone 400 gold +3 5 pierce, 5 slash Heavy, Loud, Special Resembles sculpted granite. Of ancient vergar design. Too cumbersome for most.
Silksteel Chain 200 gold +2 5 slash Loud, Steel Mail made of a miraculous alloy as lightweight as it is strong.
Full Plate 600 gold +3 5 pierce, 5 slash Heavy, Loud, Special, Steel Master-crafted layers of plate, chain, & scale. With the right fit, you're nigh invincible.
Legs
Sandals of Speed 200 gold Attune (Special) Magic, gleaming sandals with straps that tightly wrap the calf. Worn by royal porters.
