Talk:Venomous Ray (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
This spell has the same end result as ray of sickness, which a spell found in the PHB but not the SRD. Aside from a paraphrased name and description, the main difference is that this spell is also available to the druid class. - Guy (talk) 10:55, 1 August 2017 (MDT)
- Unlike ray of sickness, this spell:
- Appears on the druid spell list.
- Deals 1d4 piercing plus 3d4 poison damage (instead of 2d8 poison), and its At Higher Levels option scales slightly better better on average.
- Has a range of 30 feet instead of 60 feet.
- Has aesthetic differences.

- I agree with the above comment. To differentiate this spell, I recommend making the additional poison damage reliant on the Constitution save. The spell could be changed to:
- "On a hit, the target takes 1 piercing damage, and must succeed a Constitution saving throw or take 3d6 poison damage and become poisoned until the end of their next turn. A target that succeeds on this save takes half as much poison damage and isn't poisoned."
- I agree with the above comment. To differentiate this spell, I recommend making the additional poison damage reliant on the Constitution save. The spell could be changed to:
- The damage (3d6) is just a placeholder for now, but it should definitely be higher than a normal spell, since the target has to be hit and fail a Con save to take full damage. But with these changes, this spell draws a parallel to a Poisonous Snake's bite attack. (And this should also not be a warlock spell. Definitely Druid/Sorcerer/Wizard). --Woahluigi (talk) 14:53, 20 September 2024 (MDT)
- After my changes to this spell, I only have 2 lingering thoughts. #1: I think we can safely remove the OGL tag now. and #2: I think this spell's name should be changed to remove the word "ray". I'll leave that to someone else though, and to the admins to update the page once someone thinks of a good name. --Woahluigi (talk) 23:54, 28 September 2024 (MDT)
