Talk:Leonardo's Imploding Shell (5e Spell)

I'd bring the AC down by and the damage down by 1d6. Again, crazy range, I want to suggest 30'. I also have second thoughts that the AC should only be +1 since you have scaling AC perk on here. Needs a lot of test play because bounded accuracy makes a target unhittable for a turn with this spell potentially. Maybe just for a round which is why I am curious just how strong that one round of +x AC would be. BigShotFancyMan (talk) 07:16, 18 December 2017 (MST)

The damage was calculated using expected values, so I'm hesitant to change that. However, I'll reduce the range to 30'. As for the AC, it was meant to make enemy mobs harder to hit. The abjurer will deal damage but at the cost of noone else being able to attack the target. I've added an addendum for friendly targets.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Erias (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts.
Magic missile (3d4+3) does an average of 10.5 to one target or split across several, does so instantly, and does so at a much greater range. This spell at 3d6+1 did an average of 11.5, can only target one creature, takes a round, has less range, and even buffs the target temporarily. I'm not sure in what world that +1 damage was so valuable that this needed to be flagged as needsbalance, then nerfed to do an average damage of only 8. I'm changing the damage back.
...That said, I do think it could do without the "at higher levels" increase to AC. Considering 5e's bounded accuracy, +3 AC should be more than enough at any point. - Guy (talk) 05:52, 2 July 2018 (MDT)
3d6+1 looked to be more threatening than 3d4+3. We all overlook or don't consider everything sometimes. Hope that explains the world that +1 damage was so valuable. Also, I'm curious if this is suppose to have a spell save DC? There's no attack roll so I'd assume so? BigShotFancyMan (talk) 07:14, 2 July 2018 (MDT)
Magic missile doesn't have a saving throw. Considering the damage and nature of spell, I assumed it was not intended to have a saving throw either. - Guy (talk) 07:27, 2 July 2018 (MDT)
sigh spells really aren't one of my things lol I overlooked magic missile not having an attack roll or saving throw as well. Though, I think I am going to start giving every NPC caster I have this spell instead of magic missile and seeing what comes of that +AC before getting blasted in the face. I've gotta say, I'm getting mixed messages from this spell. Under what circumstances would it useful in the first place? It just seems extremely janky. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 14:36, 28 December 2020 (MST)

If you can't reliably damage or reach a target, and it's unlikely they'll be targeted, you can confirm damage on them next turn. Good against spellcasters currently concentrating if they're bodyblocked or under protection against the elements or something.--SwankyPants (talk) 14:58, 28 December 2020 (MST)
