Design Note: This spell is not to be confused with the older 3.5e spell of the same name from Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead, which had nothing to do with the creation of this spell.

Awaken Undead
4th-level Necromancy
Casting time: 1 hour
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a gem worth at least 100 gp containing the soul of a humanoid, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Instantaneous

Using the gem, you perform some very visceral surgery on a Medium or smaller undead or a humanoid corpse to bind and configure the soul in the gem to the target and make them an intelligent undead creature. The target must have either no Intelligence score or an Intelligence of 6 or less. It gains an Intelligence score of 10 and learns one language that you know. Its Wisdom and Charisma scores also increase to 10 if they are not already 10 or higher. The DM chooses statistics appropriate for the awakened undead, such as the statistics for a skeleton or zombie, except with changes as previously noted.

The awakened creature is charmed by you for 1 week, or until you or your companions do anything harmful to it. When the charmed condition ends, the awakened creature chooses whether or not to remain friendly to you, depending how it was treated while it was charmed.
