GP?

Many items are listed as having gp. While not necessarily gold coins, this can represent multiple things. In the UNSC, they represent the priority and ability of the group, which then translates to how higher command is willing to deploy more powerful supplies. For the Covenant, it most likely represents their social status, resulting in a similar outcome. As for jackal pirates, it may very well represent a gold backed currency.

Covenant Society

The Covenant is a theocracy led by the San'shyuum and Elites, with the capital being an artificial planet named ["High Charity"]. While the Prophets, as they are more commonly known, and Elites, jointly rule this Covenant, there are other member species as well. These are the:

There is a clear divide between certain members of the Covenant. The Prophets have, over the centuries, used religion to gain power over the Elites, eliminating high-ranking warriors who question the rule of the Prophets, or those who question the Great Journey, by giving them the rank of Arbiter, once a position of honour, and sending them on suicide missions.

The Prophets favour the Brutes, which places them on equal footing with the Elites. The Brutes are savage and will not think twice about eating other sentient races, such as humans. They see Grunts (rightfully) as cowardly and (wrongly) weak. They prefer the Jackals and Buggers, and sided with them at the time of the Great Schism.

The Kig-Yar once were, and now are again, a race of pirates and marksmen.
