Media Wiki Update

Are there any particular coding differences we should be aware of with the new update?   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   18:44, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Not that I'm aware of yet. A few things still haven't been worked out yet, but overall coding should remain [roughly] the same. — Blue Dragon (talk) 04:56, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

serious lag, and errors when searching.

Since D&D wiki has updated to using sphinx to search, I have experienced repeated erors in searches. It said to report any problems at the top of the page, so that's what I am doing.

Can you please let me know what kind of errors you are experiencing? Are you not happy with the relevancy of the searches or are there frequent technical errors? — Blue Dragon (talk) 04:54, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

URL

Whenever I try to go to Dandwiki.com through my URL I get an error page yet whenever I Google Dandwiki I can use the link to get here.

Make sure you're typing in www.dandwiki.com and not www.danddwiki.com. The word "and" is actually not completed, so the url reads D an D wiki, not D and D wiki. You wrote it correctly here but just make sure you aren't doing that when typing it in.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   04:03, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Both url's work. We have both domains of dandwiki.com and danddwiki.com (it was kept at dandwiki.com for searching reasons). --Green Dragon 04:38, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
This should be fixed now for the upgrade. Thanks for the bug report. — Blue Dragon (talk) 04:54, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Pooka 4e Race

Having just finished the write-up for the 4e Pooka race, I was unaware that there was already a 3.5e Pooka race here. Would it be at all possible to have the name of the new race changed to 'Pooka (4E Race)' instead of just 'Pooka', so as not to get them mixed up?

Incidentally, is there anything you feel could improve the write-up?

DLPC

All of the 3.5e feats are incorrectly formatted due to DLPC no longer being a proper function. On top of this It looks like properties aren't working properly either, but this could just be the dlpc not working. Either way there are some affected templates, and fixing the template will fix this issue, but most likely the DLPC can no longer be used for sorting. I'm unsure how this affects the rest of the site. - Sleaker 23:00, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Questions

Hello,

1) I have submitted an item that didn't show up (Thrillseeker base class)Additionally my friends have submitted classes some of which have been published and some which has not, they can not figure out why either. His contributions were Legend of the Swamp, and Ambassador of Slime. AND 2) When I look at all the prestige classes, it stops at S.. and there is no link to go to the second page or see the rest of the prestige classes. AND 3) This site is very cool and very needed, for the 3.5 community that didn't make the switch. Thank you.

Captcha

Hello. I was just wondering. I understand how the new captcha can help keep down on spam and vandalism and bots, but its also really annoying. Everytime you change or add a interwiki link from one article to another it registers it as a outgoing off-site link and forces a captcha. Can the program be altered to only do that for off-site wikis and not interwiki links? I'm going to hold off on continuing the removal of double redirects until someone can answer this, as its just too annoying.

Additionally, have I missed the button or is the MOI feature gone?   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   00:04, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Uploading creature images

I cannot seem to upload image files for a new creature. It says I need to be logged in even if I already am. It says:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

   (SQL query hidden)

from within function "User::idFromName". MySQL returned error "1142: SELECT command denied to user 'ddmediadb'@'localhost' for table 'wdd_user' (localhost)".

Problem

This keeps happening when I try logging on.

Spell page problems

The Aiming a Spell line (target/targets/area/effect) on the spell pages (see Heal) is broken. —edwin 13:32, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind, I fixed the template to not use VariablesExtension (which is broken).—edwin 16:33, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Could you look at my 4e race and critique, please?

Welcome back

Welcome back? I haven't seen you active recently, and just wanted to wave.-- Irykyl 08:37, 8 May 2012 (MDT)

He's been around. Still, though, he doesn't do what you would consider typical administrative work (more developmental things) and that may be why you have not seen him. But, he's actually really been helping out a lot with the development of D&D Wiki. --Green Dragon (talk) 13:27, 8 May 2012 (MDT)

recaptcha at the media wiki

Hi BD, can you update the recaptcha at the media wiki too? The newer one seems a bit better, and the spam over there is pretty bad. Marasmusine (talk) 02:31, 22 May 2012 (MDT)

Barnstar

Barnstar.png Barnstar
I give you this barnstar for merging D&D Wiki Media Repository into D&D Wiki. Thanks for consolidating files and user accounts. Thanks for preserving the file's histories. Thanks for removing the spam that D&D Wiki Media Repository housed. --Green Dragon (talk) 20:46, 27 May 2012 (MDT)

Thanks! --Green Dragon (talk) 20:46, 27 May 2012 (MDT)

Phew, that halves my workload, cool. Marasmusine (talk) 02:51, 28 May 2012 (MDT)

spaaaam

I'm deleting about two New Page spams per day, so whatever captcha we're using has been cracked. Time to change to a different one? Marasmusine (talk) 02:17, 19 March 2013 (MDT)

Thanks for letting me know. I'm going to try Asirra again---hopefully there won't be too many compatibility issues for people. — Blue Dragon (talk) 06:55, 19 March 2013 (MDT)

The past week has seen a huge increase in spambot activity, so we need another alternative already. Marasmusine (talk) 06:32, 28 June 2013 (MDT)

Hi Marasmusine, thanks for the ping. I turned on the bad behavior extension---please let me know if it's still bad continuing through the next couple of days. Thanks, — Blue Dragon (talk)
Okay, it abated for short time, but now it's bad again. I've deleted 4 counts of spam this morning alone. Marasmusine (talk) 04:40, 13 August 2013 (MDT)

errors

Hi BD - I often get an error message beginning "A database error has occurred. Did you forget to run maintenance/update.php after upgrading? See: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading#Run_the_update_script" when moving or deleting pages. Any ideas? Marasmusine (talk) 06:44, 21 March 2013 (MDT)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The recent 1.19.4 update I must have missed running the update script for. Please let me know if it happens again :) — Blue Dragon (talk) 06:49, 21 March 2013 (MDT)

Helpers Page

I am attempting to implement a "Helpers" page to assist users with their problems. If you would like to help other users with wiki problems, simply add all of the following categories that you feel that you could assist in to your User Page. The Categories available are: , , , , and . If you choose to put one of the above categories, please also add as well. Thank you, Salasay Δ 13:44, 5 February 2013 (MST)

AutoWikiBrowser

Hi BD, can you help me set up AutoWikiBrowser to work with D&D Wiki? I have used this tool on Wikipedia in the past to automate bulk page edits. There are several tasks here that would take me a year or more to finish by manually editing, and I have no idea how to make a bot.

The FAQ says this:

  • Does AWB work on other projects/languages?
Many Wikimedia projects and languages are supported, see the "User and project preferences" option in the general menu. Other languages will be added on request, though at the moment the interface is always in English. You are also able to use AWB with third-party wikis: Options > Preferences > Site, you can change the wiki there. The wiki must support the Bot API required by AWB. This means that it should have latest HEAD version of MediaWiki or something close to that. The wmf-deployment branch is also recommended, as this is what is currently live on WMF sites.

This this sound possible? Thanks, Marasmusine (talk) 01:43, 29 October 2013 (MDT)

Hi Marasmusine. I gave this a quick check, and since D&D wiki does support the bot API, it seemed to work without any problems. I put "www.dandwiki.com/w/" in the site parameter. I didn't try making any edits, but since this is the same API that the custom bots we have use, it should work. You may need to add "bot" to your account permissions, or something similar. I'll be happy trying to help further if you run into any problems or the site parameter given above doesn't work. Thanks! — Blue Dragon (talk) 09:32, 29 October 2013 (MDT)
Thanks, it's logged me in now, I had missed the "/w/" path. Now let's see if the automation works...! Marasmusine (talk) 11:07, 29 October 2013 (MDT)
Yay, it's working really well! Marasmusine (talk) 11:30, 29 October 2013 (MDT)

Forced Captcha Checks

Word. If I recall correctly, you are only admin I've yet to interact with. Marasmusine directed me here because I seem to be forced to do a captcha check for every edit I make suddenly, I was wondering if you might have an idea as to both the cause and solution of this annoyance. Thanks kindly <3 --SgtLion (talk) 14:05, 29 October 2013 (MDT)

Hi SgtLion. I believe this is related to an IP blacklist I turned on today---I've turned it off now because I'm not sure it provides anything yet it clearly has false positives. Please let me know if the problems are still occurring. — Blue Dragon (talk) 15:26, 29 October 2013 (MDT)
Aye, I'm still being forced to do captchas for every edit I make. I'm also sad that my IP is somehow blacklisted, but I'm pretty sure it's a dynamic anyway. --SgtLion (talk) 00:54, 30 October 2013 (MDT)
Hi SgtLion. It looks like it was set to trigger on all user edits that weren't admins. I believe I have fixed it now, please let me know if you continue to have CAPTCHAs. Thanks, — Blue Dragon (talk) 06:36, 30 October 2013 (MDT)

Can't delete!

It never rains but it pours, eh? I've tried to delete some items of spam this morning (5 pages already, ugh) and I get this database error:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

(SQL query hidden)

from within function "CheckUserHooks::updateCheckUserData". Database returned error "1048: Column 'cuc_actiontext' cannot be null (ddw-db)".

01:07, 30 October 2013 (MDT)

8 spam pages this morning now, maybe that blacklist was useful after all. Marasmusine (talk) 03:24, 30 October 2013 (MDT)
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I upgraded to MW 1.21 last night, but I forgot to upgrade the extensions. The bulk of them should all be upgraded now. Please let me know if you see any more database errors! — Blue Dragon (talk) 06:35, 30 October 2013 (MDT)
Deletion working correctly now, thanks. Have you seen Special:Log/newusers? Those are all spambot accounts made over the past few days :/ I can keep on top of it, though. Marasmusine (talk) 06:50, 30 October 2013 (MDT)
I put together my own puzzle system to complement the CAPTCHA---let's see if spam gets a little better! — Blue Dragon (talk) 17:30, 30 October 2013 (MDT)
I haven't seen any spam all day! Success, I'd say. Marasmusine (talk) 13:02, 31 October 2013 (MDT)

Hi BD. First of all, the additional puzzle you implemented has worked wonders, I've only seen 2 cases of spam in the past two weeks.

Second thing is, User:Honorlord left me a message[1] about some captcha check / editing problem, could you look into it? Thanks. Marasmusine (talk) 10:27, 16 November 2013 (MST)

D&D Player's Handbook II (3.5e)

Hello,

I am a new player to D&D. Our DM enjoys using 3.5e and I was wandering if DanDWiki could update the website with content from the Second Handbook, which is public domain. I was going to try and add some spells from it, however, I thought if I could email you directly, you will get better results. I hope this information is taken into consideration. Thanks!

Best, Manius

Hi Manius, I'm just wondering, what makes you think that PHB II is public domain? Marasmusine (talk) 00:37, 3 December 2013 (MST)

List Templates aren't functioning

Geez, you really do get people talking to you in spurts. As brought up in SRD Talk:Outsider Type and Template talk:SRD Type List Template, the list templates don't appear to be filtering out by pagename anymore. So SRD:Outsider_Type, SRD:Animal_Type, SRD:Construct_Type are all bringing up the same, unfiltered list of articles. I brought this issue to you because it doesn't look like the template or anything relevant has been changed on the wiki pages themselves, so I can only assume it's the product of an update or bug or somethin'. Thanks kindly, --SgtLion (talk) 12:54, 3 December 2013 (MST)

Hi SgtLion, thanks for bringing this to my attention. It looks like DPL has changed how they interface with the parser a bit; to fix these problems, the DPL calls need to change from <DPL>...</DPL> to . If you see more errors like this, please let me know or change the DPL call to the style. Thanks, — Blue Dragon (talk) 11:33, 4 December 2013 (MST)
As always, you deliver quickly and beautifully well. Thanks a bunch <3 --SgtLion (talk) 12:27, 4 December 2013 (MST)
