Their viral research and close ties to the federal government eventually lead to them being chosen for the Pan-Immunity Virion Project twenty years later as well as power infantry armor and laser research.[57][64]
  • ZAX 1.2 is brought in to regulate conditions in West Tek. It is not part of the Vault-Tec preservation software, so it does not have any orders to protect humanity after the bombs fall. In the meantime, it calmly calculates data and plays chess with the scientists. Many scientists claim that ZAX is a "big ol' cheater" and draws the game out too much for a computer of his considerable abilities.[65]

2056[edit]

  • The Integrated Human Resources Management System v2.3, a joint product of the District of Columbia Office of Software Management and the United States Office of Computational Organization, as part of a contract with Computechtron, was implemented.[66]

2057[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) February: United States government removes the Grand Canyon's protected status as a national park.[67]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) May: Uranium mining begins in the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is closed indefinitely.[67]
  • March 15–June 15–July 15: Due to some shipping error, the Zion Canyon general store had yet to receive its supply of De-Luxe Mountain Man All-In-One Survival Kits, which it ordered three weeks prior. One month later the shipping company—instead delivering the survival gear—delivered crates of Dinky the Dinosaur(TM) Officially-Licensed Dino-Action Dolls. This blunder was a major loss for the store, causing it to have to sell these toys to regain its lost capital.[68] These toys can still be found in the store in 2281.

2058[edit]

  • Isla Negra Holdings begins to take control of Point Lookout, Maryland as the New Plague devastates the region.[69]

2059[edit]

  • The Anchorage Front Line is established, as the United States increases its military presence in Alaska to protect its oil interests. The Anchorage Front Line causes tensions in the United States and Canada, as the United States attempts to pressure Canada into allowing American military units to guard the Alaskan pipeline.[70]
  • The first artificial Intelligence is born. Limited by memory constraints, its expansion is rapidly halted. The discovery paves the way for future A.I. research in laboratories throughout the United States.[71]

2060[edit]

  • Traffic on the streets of the world stops moving. Fuel becomes too precious to waste on automobiles, so alternatives are explored - electric and fission-powered cars begin to be manufactured, but factories can only make limited amounts while conserving fuel. Pressure on fusion research increases.[72]
  • The European-Middle Eastern War abruptly stops as the oil wells in the Middle East no longer produce oil. With the fields exhausted, neither side has a reason to continue hostilities. Both the Commonwealth and the Middle Eastern states are almost completely ruined by eight years of war.[73]
  • The European Commonwealth falls apart, reduced to hostile nation states, fighting over the remaining resources. The European Civil War begins.[74]

2061[edit]

2062[edit]

  • May: Construction of Vault 92 begins.[75]
  • May, 3rd: A U.F.O. codenamed "Paladine" crashes just north of Hagerstown, Maryland, but could not be recovered.[76]
  • Despite quarantine measures, the New Plague continues to spread, fueling national paranoia.[77]
  • Wan Yang is arrested as a suspect in the Niagara Sabotage.[78]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Many Mormon congregations come together to purchase places in Vault 70, located in Salt Lake City.[79]

2063[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Dr. Willem Clark, a top nuclear physicist in his day, is put in charge of all scientific endeavors at the Reservation. Colonel Green, a career soldier in the U.S. army, is put in charge of security.[24]
  • August: The construction of most Vaults completed, except for Vault 13, whose construction finally gets off the ground heralding a development cycle that seems plagued with problems. Drills begin in the other cities with completed Vaults, but the increasing frequency of the drills has a "cry wolf" effect, and the turnouts for drills trickle off as the years go on.[80][81]

2064[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) A photograph of Dr. Clark, Dr. Sebastian, and the Maniac AI surfaces during the lull between the remobilization of Los Alamos and the arrival of its new mission orders.[24]
  • March: Construction of Vault 106 begins.[75]

2065[edit]

  • February: Construction of Vault 76 begins.[75]
  • April 14: M.A.R.Go.T. enters service.[82]
  • June: Due to enormous demands for electricity from a 17+ million population, a nuclear reactor in New York City goes supercritical, almost causing a meltdown. The near meltdown brings into effect power rationing, and the term "Hot Summer" is used to refer to this incident.[83]
  • August: Increasing need for mobility in the United States mechanized cavalry leads the military to focus the efforts on creating a man-based tank - essentially, a two-legged walking armored unit: power armor.[84] Research grows until 2067 and several prototypes are developed, many of which prove to be unworkable in the field. These prototypes pave the way for future advances in military, construction, and fusion technology.[85]

2066[edit]

  • The U.S. Army conducts a test of a next generation nuclear weapon, dubbed the Super Bomb by the media.[86]
  • The U.S. Navy missile cruiser USS Ebon Atoll is accidentally sunk by the U.S. Navy Submarine USS. Interference during the Anchorage Campaign. The Interference mistook the Ebon Atoll for an enemy vessel and shot it with a nuclear torpedo killing all on board. It is one of the worst U.S. Navy disasters since World War II.[87]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Resource rationing in Denver results in Food Riots, after the midwestern parts of the United States and Mexico cannot supply enough food for the population. National Guard units are called in to deal with the situation.[88]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Poseidon Energy shuts down the Eagle Rock mining complex due to the danger and expense. The installation is sold to the government.[39]
  • May: Construction of Vault 87 begins.[75]
  • Spring: As the oil resources dry up across the globe, China's fossil fuel dependency causes an energy crisis in the nation. China, bordering on collapse, becomes more aggressive in its trade talks with the United States. Unwilling to export oil to China, talks between the United States and China break down.[89]
  • June 24: Negotiations between the U.S. and other world powers come to a dramatic end, with the president walking out of oil talks with the other world powers. After a much heated debate, the president stormed out of the meeting and declared that the last known supply of petroleum will be used exclusively by the U.S. and the U.S. will not sell or trade any oil to outside parties.[90]
  • Summer: Adding further insult to the Sino-American relations, the first crude fusion cell is unveiled, one of the results of the power armor project. Devices designed for the fusion cell begin to be manufactured. Incorporating fusion power into the general U.S. infrastructure begins, but the process is too slow to supply power to the regions that need it. Nearly eleven years later, few sections of the United States were supplied with fusion power.[91][92]
  • December: In the winter of 2066, China invades Alaska. The Anchorage Front Line becomes a true battleground.[93][94][95] The United States Congress unanimously passes and the then-President of the United States signs the U.S. Declaration of War on China, officially marking the beginning of the Sino-American War.
  • December: As a sign of increasing tension between the two countries, Canada proves reluctant to allow American troops on Canadian soil or allow American planes to fly over Canadian airspace. American and Canadian tensions rise, but Canada eventually backs down, and U.S. troops pass through Canada. This sets the stage for the Canadian annexation in 2076.[93][96]

2067[edit]

  • The first suit of T-45d power armor is deployed in Alaska. While lacking the full mobility of future versions, this power armor is incredibly effective against Chinese tanks and infantry. Its ability to carry heavy ordnance becomes key in various localized conflicts, and it has the power to destroy entire towns without endangering the wearer. China rushes to create its own versions, but they are many years behind the United States.[97]
  • A Nuka-Cola machine can be found on almost every street in America.[42]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Senator Todd Peterson decides to build a secret bunker to house himself and his family should war break out. Senator Peterson is a wealthy man in his own right, but lacks the funds necessary for such a project. Through secret dealings with Poseidon Oil and a covert branch of the government known as the Enclave, the final funding for the project is attained. A construction site is chosen in southern Colorado and work begins.[98]

2068[edit]

2069[edit]

  • Canada begins to feel the pressure from the United States military as the U.S. draws upon Canadian resources for the war effort. Vast stretches of timberland are destroyed, and other resources in Canada are stretched to the breaking point. Many Americans refer to Canada as Little America, and Canadian protests are unheard.[99]
  • February 11: By order of the U.S. government, all Patriot's Cookbook magazines are banned and incinerated. However, many magazines still remained in circulation.[100]
  • March: Vault 13 is finally completed - it is the last of the Vaults on the West Coast,[101] and drills begin. Due to its late completion, the "cry wolf" effect that hurt the other Vaults is not as pronounced.[80][102]
  • October: Construction of Vault 76 ends.[75]
  • December: Construction of Vault 106 and Vault 108 ends. Vault 108 was in construction for 8 years due to work stoppage.[75]

2070[edit]

  • The first of the Chryslus Motors fusion-driven cars are developed. Reassuringly big and American, the limited models carry a hefty price tag but are sold out within days. Many Chryslus plants have long since been converted into making military ordnance.[103]

2071[edit]

  • West Tek Research Facility is put under military command.[104]
  • December: Construction of Vault 87 ends.[75]

2072[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Completed B.O.M.B. missiles are sent to different space centers around the U.S. so they can be carried into space and installed into the B.O.M.B. satellites. The process is slow, but it is being carried out fairly regularly.[24]
  • Journal-It Software is copyrighted by PagSoft LLC.[105]
  • June: The United States Army confirms the development of a "Super Weapon(Liberty Prime)" to liberate Anchorage Alaska.
  • June 3: The United States' increasing demand for Canadian resources causes protests and riots in several Canadian cities. An attempted sabotage of the Alaskan pipeline is all the military needs as an excuse to finalize its annexation of Canada, which had already begun in 2067.[93][106][107][108][109]

2073[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) August: The Ballistic Orbital Missile Base, or B.O.M.B.-001, is completed and partially functional (for security and maintenance bots) using a temporary onboard generator. The only thing the base needs are the manually input final launch instructions and codes, and the main power reactor.[110][111]
  • September 15: As China becomes increasingly aggressive with their use of biological weapons, the United States government felt that a countermeasure was needed. The Pan-Immunity Virion Project is officially formed and plans are made to begin experiments at the West Tek Research Facility in Southern California.[112][113]

2074[edit]

  • Despite claiming that it fights a purely defensive war, United States units are deployed to China. Long supply lines and difficult conditions on the mainland lead to the units becoming bogged down in fighting. American infantry, mechanized divisions, and power armor units suffer from strained resource and supply lines.[114]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) The government turns the lower levels of Eagle Rock into a radioactive waste dump. Future founders of the Enclave help Poseidon Energy secure a contract for the operation, leading to the development of Agricola robots and the installation of a bunker on site.[39]
  • June: Construction of Vault 112 ends.[75]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) July: Bloomfield Space Center is completed. It is tasked with building Hermes XIII and Hermes XIV, rockets meant to service B.O.M.B.-001 and -002 respectively. Originally meant for Mars missions, the rockets are instead to be used for installing the final elements of the orbital base (reactors), entering final launch instructions, and performing a final check of the station.[110][111]

2075[edit]

  • May 9: F.E.V. experiments continue at West Tek with batch 10-011, in the wake of successful tests on flatworms; the flatworms exhibit increase size and heightened resistance to viral contagions. Experiments with insects have less success, and further experimentation on insects is postponed by Major Barnett.[117][119][120]
  • May: Vault 112 seals two years early, for Stanislaus Braun's sadistic desires.[121]
  • June 30: F.E.V. experiments continue at West Tek with batch 10-011, with white mice as subjects. Increased size, muscle density, and Intelligence are noted.[117][122][123]
  • November 9: FEV experimentation (batch 10-011) on rabbits is concluded. Increased size, Intelligence, and (this time) aggressiveness is noted. Apparently, it was hard to determine whether the flatworms in the previous experiments were angrier and more violent than normal. Frankly, the researchers cannot be blamed for this.[117][124]

2076[edit]

  • RobcOS v.85 is copyrighted.[125]
  • REPCONN Aerospace is bought out by RobCo Industries.[61]
  • January 3: A military team under the command of Colonel Spindel is sent to the West Tek research facility to monitor the experiments in the interest of national security, due to fears of international espionage.[34] Captain Roger Maxson (the grandfather of John Maxson, the High Elder of the Brotherhood of Steel in 2161) is among the team personnel.[126]
  • January 12: Splicing in several new gene sequences into their test virus, dogs are injected with batch 11-101a at West Tek. Although increased strength was noted, increased intelligence was not.[127] Using batch 11-011, experiments are conducted on raccoons. The same results are noted, but the attempted escape of several infected raccoons causes Major Barnett to terminate the escape... and the test subjects. Two pairs of raccoons, however, are unaccounted for.[128]
    • Note: Scott Campbell and Brian Freyermuth intended these escaped raccoons to form an intelligent animal community northwest of the Glow called the "Burrows". This location was never implemented.[117][129]
  • January: The United States annexation of Canada is complete. Canadian protesters and rioters are shot on sight, and the Alaskan Pipeline swarms with American military units. Pictures of atrocities make their way to the United States, causing further unrest and protests.[93][130]
  • April 15: Once all secondary tests and studies are done on the test subjects, all dogs from the batch 11-101a Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) tests at West Tek are terminated... from a safe distance.[117][131][132]
  • June: Power armor T-51b series prototype completed, resulting in the T-51b power armor. This is the pinnacle of power armor technology before the Great War. Many of these units are sent to China, and they begin to carve a swath through the Chinese forces. The Chinese resources are strained to the breaking point, and the supply lines from the nations China has annexed begin to break down.[133]
  • July: Flotation Homes and Seaweed is published by Vault-Tec Industries.[80]
  • August: Food and energy riots begin in major cities throughout the United States. Military units begin to be deployed in cities within the United States to contain rioters, and many temporary prisons are constructed. A state of emergency is declared, and martial law soon follows.[134]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) August: Hermes XIII and Hermes XIV are completed, loaded with cargo and placed on the Bloomfield launch platform, awaiting the final funding, and the okay to launch.[110][111]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) October: Production of B.O.M.B. nuclear missiles is put on hold due to budget cuts. The Reservation is put on reserve.[111]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) October: Due to the seriousness of world events and the threat of nuclear war, Hermes' launch is postponed while funds are routed to vault technology. Launch is rescheduled for 2077.[110][111]
  • October 4: At West Tek, fifteen chimpanzees are infected with batch 11-111. The most successful test to date, growth and immunities in the chimpanzees surpass all other subjects to date. The military practically drools over the results. Plans are made in secret to begin testing in small quarantine towns in North America, and the Mariposa Military Base construction is sped up in anticipation of moving the West Tek project to a location under military supervision.[135]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) November: Enclave personnel seize control of Bloomfield Space Center and begin researching and developing a way to convert Hermes XIII and 14 into a personnel transports to transport important individuals off-planet.[110][111]

Several soldiers defect from the military both in Canada and the United States. They are captured, and are sent to military prisons.[147][148][146]
  • February: F.E.V. Research is leaked to the world through an unknown source. Protests in many major cities and governments around the world, as well as accusations that the U.S. was responsible for the New Plague. F.E.V. is seen as the threat, and serves only to fuel tensions. The governments of the world fear what the U.S. is up to. Speculating anything from trying to make a breed of super soldier, to trying to make Hitler's master race, they begin to panic.[149]
  • February 16th: The testing of the Archimedes I weapons system was successful. However, despite precautions being taken, several minor systems were overloaded.[150] Furthermore, both the Black Mountain communications array and the Hidden Valley United States Armed Forces bunkers experienced system frying power fluctuations at the time of the testing.[151] However the Archimedes II testing was pending the long-range communication/targeting system on the Euclid's C-Finder.[152]

  • September 6: Technicians at the V.S.S. Facility notice General Chase is making radical, unrealistic changes to the Anchorage simulation. They believe Chase is becoming obsessed with the simulation and is gradually going insane, but refrain from confronting him out of fear that they will lose their jobs to military contractors.
  • October 10: Captain Roger Maxson and his men discover that the scientists at Mariposa Military Base have been using "military volunteers" (military prisoners who didn't have their brains scooped for use in robobrains) as test subjects in their experiments. Morale in the base breaks down, and in light of the mental breakdown of Colonel Robert Spindel stationed at the base, Maxson's men turn to him for leadership.[156][157]

    • In the early morning (U.S. Eastern Standard time) the war begins, triggered by an unknown party. The United States and China deploy their nuclear arsenals. Other countries, seeing the missiles on their way, launch their planes and fire their warheads as well. Air raid sirens sound, but very few people heed the warning. The vaults are sealed. Two hours of nuclear bombardment later, the War ends, along with much of humanity.[156]
    • Randall Clark witnesses the destruction of Salt Lake City and, by extension, the death of his family. The city is hit by thirteen nuclear warheads, resulting in total destruction.[162]
    • Mr. House saves Las Vegas and most of the surrounding area from complete destruction with his defenses at the Lucky 38, stopping 68 of the 77 ICBMs launched at Las Vegas (59 through forced deactivation and 9 destroyed with laser cannons mounted on top of the Lucky 38). The resulting "light show" can be seen as far as Mexico City.[163] Nine of the warheads evade destruction, a fault of Mr. House being forced to use an inferior operating system without the Platinum Chip, but only damaging minor parts of the Mojave Desert, with the most damaging detonation being near Nellis Air Force Base.[164]
    • The Sierra Madre gala event begins, but is cut short by the war. The casino hermetically seals itself and the holographic security murders many of the guests. The few scattered survivors eventually commit suicide in the following hours and days. Vera Keyes dies from an overdose of her pain medication, while Frederick Sinclair dies in his attempt to disarm his traps. The only known survivor is Dean Domino.

    • The West Tek Research Facility is hit by warheads, breaking open the F.E.V. tanks on levels four and five and releasing it into the atmosphere. Mutated by radiation, it loses its mutagenic abilities, but it later complicates things for the Master.[167]
    • The Mariposa Military Base survives; the soldiers within protected from the radiation and FEV flooding the wasteland.[156][168]
    • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Surviving scientists and soldiers based in Los Alamos band together with other survivors they encounter for safety. They set up a temporary camp in a cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde and attempt to contact the federal government for further instructions. No contact is ever made. A small vault is built into the cliff side to shield the only computer they have from the elements.[169]
    • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) All Enclave personnel leave Bloomfield Space Center to either take cover or maintain "hot spots". Sub-reactor is turned off. Bloomfield, B.O.M.B.-001 & 002, and Hermes XIII & Hermes XIV are completely forgotten.[110][111]

  • October 25: At Mariposa, Platner, bound in power armor, is sent out to get specific readings on the atmosphere. He reports no significant radiation in the area surrounding the facility.[156][170]
  • October 27: After burying the scientists in the wastes outside of Mariposa, the soldiers seal the military base, then head out into the desert, taking supplies and weapon schematics with them. Captain Maxson leads his men and families to the government bunker at Lost Hills.[156][171]
    • Note: Although Maxson's points in his holodisk indicated that civilian personnel other than the families of soldiers under his command were to remain at the base, whether they did so or not is unknown.[172]
  • October 28: After having wandered for five days, Randall Clark takes refuge in a former USGS research station inside a cave in Zion Canyon.[162]
  • October 31: A black rain begins to come down in areas across the United States and likely the globe, causing a spike in radiation levels in affected areas.[173]
  • November: Captain Maxson, his men, and their families, arrive at the Lost Hills bunker a few weeks later, suffering many casualties along the way, including Maxson's wife (but not his teenage son). The surviving soldiers go on to become the Brotherhood of Steel.[174]
  • November: During the Exodus, a faction within the Brotherhood of Steel led by Sergeant Dennis Allen breaks off to explore the southeast West Tek Research Facility(Glow) to recover technology. The Captain refuses to permit that, so Allen and his separatist group splits away from the Brotherhood of Steel, taking power armor and weapons with them.[175][176]
  • November: The separatists make their way to the West Tek research facility. They arrive there twenty days later, and are promptly chewed apart by the West Tek's unforgiving automated defense systems. Wounded, Allen begins to suffer radiation poisoning from a leak in his suit. Before he dies, he logs what happened to the expedition into a holodisk.[175][176]

  • January 15: Glowing green snow fell in Zion Canyon.[177]
  • January 28–30: The background radiation in Zion Canyon is finally low enough for Randall Clark to explore outside the USGS research station. He quickly finds himself to be the only living thing in the immediate vicinity.[177]
  • The dwellers of Vault 87 are locked in airtight chambers and exposed to the Forced Evolutionary Virus(FEV) by the Vault's Overseer and his security, who are simply, though callously, following the "plan" laid out by Vault-Tec. The vault's population is transformed into super mutants.[178]
  • The city of kids, Little Lamplight is officially founded. By unanimous vote Jason Grant is named as the city's first mayor.[179]

2080[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) John Bloch's military group makes a peace-protection pact with local ranchers.[181]

2081[edit]

  • The Skynet AI, in Sierra Army Depot, becomes self-aware, according to its own records.

2083[edit]

  • May: Throughout the month Randall Clark notes mutated life returning to Zion Canyon. Particularly, prickly pear, honey mesquite, banana yucca, Bighorners, stinging flies larger than normal lizards, and something dragonfly sized that zaps them in mid air then scoops them up.[182]
  • Summer: The city of Necropolis is founded by the ghoul survivors of Vault 12 and the US citizens that fled to Bakersfield when the bombs fell.[183]

2084[edit]

  • April 10–~June 17: Randall Clark leaves Zion Canyon to visit Salt Lake City, circling pockets of radiation and scavenging. Outside of Nephi he caught the trail of three men heading toward Fountain Green, he didn't follow however, believing them to be cannibals bue to the missing corpses of the old couple he mercy killed on the day of the Great War.[184]
  • Spring: Set takes control of Necropolis, wrestling control from the original Overseer. The Vault 12 Overseer, not willing to take a dirtnap, is driven north and history loses sight of him.[185]

2085[edit]

  • The planned date for the U.S. military to bring the VB-02 Vertibird, a Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft, into service.[186] For obvious reasons, this never happens, but the Enclave resumes development after regaining its footing.

2087[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) December: After most of the initial survivors in the Reservation succumb to radiation, those "fortunate" enough to not die have turned into ghouls. And after spending ten years underground, they finally come back to the surface. Twelve ghouls, including Dr. Willem Clark, volunteer to search the wastes in the hopes of finding other survivors.[24]

2088[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) The computer in Mesa Verde fails. The scientists resort to carving their most important schematics into the kiva walls.[169]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) December: Of the twelve volunteers to explore the wastes, only one comes back to the Reservation; Dr. Willem Clark. However, he has brought back a few dozen fellow ghouls to seek shelter at the Reservation.[24]

2089[edit]

  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) Scientists in Mesa Verde began to drill the village children in the ways of mathematics and science so that knowledge is not forgotten. They hope that their descendants will one day help bring civilization back to the wasteland.[169]
  • Van Buren (not confirmed as canon) January: After explaining the hardships and prejudices placed against ghouls by smoothskin humans, the ghouls of the Reservation proclaim Dr. Willem Clark as their leader. Willem further solidifies his place as leader by explaining his plans to one day make the ghouls the rightful and true heirs to the Promised Earth and that becoming a ghoul was the next, logical step in the evolutionary process.[24]

2090[edit]

  • Vault 29 opens. Harold sets out to make his fortune as a trader, making the circuit around the survivalist communities in the wasteland.[187][188]

2091[edit]

  • Vault 8 opens, and they use their Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.) to create fertile ground for their city. This eventually becomes Vault City.[189]
    • Note: While Joanne Lynette says that the city was founded 120 years ago, which would place the event around 2120, the Chosen One later says that it's 70 years before the Vault Dweller left Vault 13. This probably means that Fallout 2 was initially meant to take place earlier, and the dialogue file was not corrected.[190]

2092[edit]

  • The Los Angeles Vault opens, the Boneyard is founded and attracts survivors.[191]
  • Dr. Richard Moreau is exiled from Vault City for murder. The circumstances surrounding the murder are unknown, but he changes his last name to Grey and heads south.[192]

2093[edit]

  • The Hub is founded by a man named Angus, who sets up camp around a filthy oasis in the desert, and he proceeds to begin trading with other settlements.[193]

2095[edit]

  • September 20–November 15: 28 Mexican survivors – eleven male, eight female and nine children – settle in Zion Canyon.[194]

2096[edit]

  • Harold rises to the level of a caravan boss in the Hub. His caravans suffer occasional attacks in the wastes, but Harold's caravan outfit survives and prospers... until the mutant attacks begin to pick up a few years later.[195]
  • February: The inhabitants of Vault 22 leave their vault due to an outbreak of mutated spores infecting most of the dwellers and overrunning the Vault.
  • February 11: About 118 survivors of Vault 22 move out of the Mojave wasteland and travel to Zion Canyon. Most are infected with the spores and bring spore carriers and spore plants to the Zion Valley and attack/kill most of the Mexican survivors already in Zion.[196]
  • February 14: According to Randall Clark, the Vault 22 survivors eat the Mexican survivors they took captive.[196]
  • February 19 - January 13, 2097: Randall Clark begins to ambush the Vault 22 survivors and continues to until the remaining 34 survivors leave Zion.[197][198]

2097[edit]

  • January: J. Hendricks becomes overseer of the remaining Vault 22 survivors, and as his first order as overseer orders everyone to leave Zion Canyon.[197]
  • January 13: The thirty-four Vault 22 survivors leave Zion Canyon after 10 months of ambushes from Randall Clark.[199]
  • A man named Jonathan Faust leads his group of about 200 people from the overcrowded Vault 15 into the wastes of the outside. Eventually they become a raider band known as the Vipers.[200]

2101[edit]

  • The Vault City Overseer retires and the Council of Citizens is established. The Council appoints the initial First Citizen.[201]

2102[edit]

  • May 22: Increasing mutant attacks on Harold's caravans frustrate him to the point of financing and leading an expedition to find out where the mutants are coming from. Consulting with a scientist and doctor at the Hub, a man by the name of Richard Grey, the two of them decide to join forces.[202]
  • June 23: Richard Grey's expedition (including Harold) finds the Mariposa Military Base and is summarily scattered and defeated by the mutant inhabitants. Grey is knocked into one of the vats of Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) by a robotic arm, and Harold is knocked unconscious, only to awaken later out in the wasteland.[203]
  • June 27: Harold, already mutating, is found by traders and taken back to the Hub. His former caravan partners and employees, horrified by his condition, abandon him.[204]
  • July: Richard Grey, now horribly mutated by the virus, crawls from the vat, covered with F.E.V. and in terrible pain. Barely able to think or perceive his surroundings, he crawls into the vat control room and begins his audio log. He fades in and out of consciousness, sometimes for days or weeks at a time.[205]
  • July–November: Richard Grey begins to acclimate to his condition, and begins his first tests of animals by exposing them to F.E.V. These experiments and his growing awareness lay the foundation for his plans for the Unity and the master race. He takes the name "the Master".[206]
  • November: The first human victim wanders into Mariposa, and Grey consumes him.[207]
  • December: Grey continues his experiments on wanderers that enter Mariposa with no success. The creations are flawed (due to the radiation counts in their bodies), making them big but incredibly stupid, and Grey consumes them rather than letting them live.[208]

2103[edit]

  • January: The Master discovers the problem with the influence of radiation on his mutations, and he begins to choose his subjects more carefully. The first classic super mutants are born. He begins his plans to build an army.[209]
  • 2103-2130: Throughout this period, the Master begins slowly gathering test subjects, willing or unwilling, from local human stock. The Great Winter of 2130 and the scarcity of human subjects make building his army difficult.[210]

2108[edit]

  • August 22–September 3: Randall Clark tracks 10 sets of barefoot tracks northeast of the Zion Canyon entrance, and finds feral ghouls, which he believes to be the result of dementia until they attack him on sight. Over a little more than a week, he rids Zion of the ghouls.[211]

2113[edit]

  • February 5-6: Randall Clark attempts to commit suicide on his 60th birthday, with the help of a bottle of Whiskey and a 12 guage shotgun.[212]

2120[edit]

  • Angus establishes himself as governor over the Hub.[213]
  • Skynet is given final orders by its masters, then left to rot in Sierra Army Depot.

2121[edit]

  • Spring: Vault 15 opens.[214]
  • Winter: Raiders begin to organize in the region as food supplies run low. The Khans and the Vipers begin terrorizing local settlements.[215]

2122[edit]

  • Spring: Shady Sands is founded and a wall is erected to protect the settlement from raiders.[216][217]

2123[edit]

  • April 25: 24 children, half boys, half girls, arrive in Zion Canyon from an unknown place. Randall Clark takes interest, and starts watching them from a distance.[218]

2124[edit]

  • January 2–22: Randall Clark begins leaving gifts, like books and medicine, and notes for the children to make the most of their new home. He signs every note as "The Father". The children later form the tribe the Sorrows. Clark also realizes that he is terminally ill, probably with lung cancer.[219]
  • January 23: Randall Clark makes his final notes as he climbs up Red Gate to make sure the children will not find his body, and reveal the mythological "Father" figure to merely being an old man. He dies peacefully shortly afterwards.[219]

2125[edit]

  • The Vipers attempt to raze the Hub in its formative years. Despite the numerical advantage, they are defeated by a coordinated defence led by Angus. Beaten, they retreat to the north.[200]
  • Winter: Angus is murdered. The Hub is thrown into chaos.[220]
  • Spain emerges as the technological and economic leader of the European union, and begins instituting policies that lead to the eventual separation of the eastern members of the European Union.

2126[edit]

  • A band of merchants seizes the water tower in the Hub. They demand anyone wanting water must pay a toll. The Great Merchant Wars begin.[221]
  • 2126-2128: The Great Merchant Wars are fought, the Water Merchants seal up the town, but are outnumbered.[222]

2127[edit]

  • Vault 101's original Overseer dies after grooming a subordinate to continue his work.[223]

2128[edit]

  • A man named Roy Greene makes peace in the Hub and negotiates a settlement. The Hub's Central Council is formed, composed of two representatives from each of the Hub caravan companies. A long period of indecisiveness and meetings maintain the status quo in the Hub.[222]

2130[edit]

  • The Great Winter occurs.[224]

2131[edit]

  • A group of machinists comes to the Boneyard, settling into an old, abandoned factory and beginning to manufacture weapons and ammunition.[225]
  • 2131-2135: The Master begins ordering his super mutants to gather human stock from caravans. For many years, the caravan disappearances are blamed on monsters in the desert, and even when the abductions begin to occur on Hub caravans, the deathclaws are blamed. The super mutant army grows.[226]

2135[edit]

  • Elder Roger Maxson dies of cancer, and his son, already an accomplished soldier, takes up the role of "General" (Elder) within the Brotherhood of Steel. John Maxson becomes a member of the Paladins, showing tremendous promise as a soldier.[227]

2137[edit]

  • The Master begins to mass-produce super mutants. Only about one in six or one in five attempts are successful, and of these successes, only half seem to last to go on to be part of his growing army, called the Unity.[228]

2138[edit]

  • The cryogenically frozen Robert House regains consciousness.[229]

2140[edit]

  • Decker forms the Underground in the Hub and starts pulling strings.[230]

2148[edit]

  • The brutal eastern European winter forces the Belukr tribe to flee from European Union territory. In the following spring, the tribe makes its way to Moscow, where they encounter the Muscovite Vault Dwellers.

2150[edit]

  • Around the early 2150s the Vipers recover from their defeat by Angus at the Hub, replenish their ranks from captured slaves and caravan drivers, and begin to establish a power base in the badlands to the North of the Hub (and south of the Lost Hills Bunker). Driven by a religious frenzy (and the need to provide for their much larger numbers of soldiers and disciples), they begin raiding more frequently than before, attracting the attention of the Brotherhood of Steel.[200]

2151[edit]

  • The Brotherhood of Steel Elder Council sends out Knights to seek traces of Sergeant Dennis Allen's separatist group. All they find is ruins.[175]
  • Crimson Caravan Company is founded by Demetre Romara.[231]
  • The Boneyard machinists run out of scrap in the surrounding area, form trade relations with Adytum.[225]

2152[edit]

  • As their influence slowly spreads throughout the wastes, the Master finds humans, doomsday cultists, and rather than dip them in the vats, he demands their obedience as spies - their leader is a man named Morpheus, an ex-member of the gang called the Rippers, and he pledges his followers to the Master. Morpheus and his cultists form the future core of the Children of the Cathedral.[232]

2153[edit]

  • Vault 760-C opens. The residents begin rebuilding Vancouver, Canada, and scouring the wastelands for music.

2154[edit]

  • Vault 17 was raided and its inhabitants taken prisoner by the Master's Army. They were subsequently turned into super mutants, among them Lily Bowen.

2155[edit]

  • The machinists in the Boneyard name themselves Gun Runners.[233]
  • The Brotherhood sends out a few squads of scouts to track the Vipers down - it is more of a training exercise conducted by John Maxson's father, as the Brotherhood is convinced that small detachment of troops in power armor would be sufficient to deal with a group of raiders, no matter how large. One Brotherhood squad, lead by Maxson, finds the Vipers. Expecting the raiders to break and run, Maxson doesn't take into account the religious ferocity of the Vipers (or their poisoned weapons), and when a single arrow nicks him with his helmet off, he dies within hours. John Maxson takes up the role of Elder, and Rhombus becomes the new head of the Paladins.[200][234]
  • The Paladins, now led by Rhombus, begin a full scale campaign against the Vipers, tracking them down and wiping out almost all of their members within the span of a month. Some of the Vipers are able to flee north and east into the mountain range.[200]
    • Note: According to Chris Avellone's Fallout Bible #6, the Vipers were never heard from again. It was added there possibly because they don't appear in the final game, but it is inconsistent with Fallout, where the Vipers are mentioned by several characters (Ian, Aradesh, Killian) as still being around. The surviving Vipers must have therefore been still active in California until at least 2161. Furthermore, small groups of Vipers can be found in the Mojave Wasteland in 2281.
  • After capturing a caravan of vault dwellers, the Master learns the location of the Boneyard Vault(Los Angeles Vault), the future site of the Cathedral. He conquers the inhabitants and sets up operations there, and the human cultists begin to use the Vault as their powerbase. Within the Vault, the Master begins to send out patrols to Vault locations in search of these other Vaults. This move is finalized in the subsequent year, 2156.[235][236]

2156[edit]

  • The Master sees advantages in establishing a benevolent "religion" (the Children of the Cathedral), and using them as spies in settlements throughout the wastes. Missionaries from the Children of the Cathedral spread slowly across the wasteland, acting as eyes and ears for Morpheus and the Master.[237]

2157[edit]

  • The Master learns the location of the Bakersfield Vault, Vault 12, and sends a detachment of super mutants there to seize the vault. Many ghouls are snapped like twigs in the attack, and Set finally parleys with the super mutants, telling them that the ghouls are the Vault survivors the super mutants are looking for. The super mutants, angered at failing to find an intact Vault, set up a small garrison at the watershed to watch the inhabitants and ensure Set's...cooperation in the war to come.[238]

2158[edit]

  • Regulators take control of Adytum. The trade relations with the Gun Runners sour, as the trade begins to favor the settlement heavily.[239]

2159[edit]

The people of the Belukr Tribe and the Muscovite Vault Dwellers form the Reborn Coalition of Soviet Nations

The Vault Dweller marches into the wasteland, leaving Vault 13 behind him.[249]
  • May 12: Vault Dweller removes his Armored Vault 13 jumpsuit and from this day forward, never wears it again.[250][251]
  • July 10: The Vault Dweller heads north with a small group of fellow vault dwellers and wastelanders and founds the small village of Arroyo.[252][253]
  • The Brotherhood of Steel helps the other human outposts drive the Master's Army away with minimal loss of life, on both sides of the conflict. The advanced technology of the Brotherhood is slowly reintroduced into New California, with little disruption or chaos. The Brotherhood of Steel wisely remains out of the power structure, and becomes a major research and development house.
  • The former residents of Vault 760-C ratify the Treaty of Vancouver, forming the Music Appreciation Society.

She runs the gauntlet in the Temple of Trials, using her charm to pass most of the tests after her handgun jams (and is ruined) on the first level. She offers numerous criticisms of the test, resulting in many revisions.
    • Note: The broken handgun is the one you see on her table in the opening movie of Fallout 2.[277]
  • February 2: The Vault Dweller's daughter ascends to role of Village Elder. She rules with a steady hand, and her wisdom is greatly respected.[278]

  • While there had already been a small number of ghouls in the area soon to become the town of Gecko, the population swells and the town of Gecko is formed. The new influx of ghouls bring scavenged technology and know-how, and the power plant in Gecko becomes operational later that year. Vault City looks upon their new neighbors with growing concern.[286]

  • July–August: Enclave scientists and chemical corps scour the remains of Mariposa, while assault squads comb the desert for slaves they can use to excavate the military base and get to the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) vats. One of the squads includes soldier Frank Horrigan, age 25 at the time, recently removed from duty on the President's Secret Service detail to take some R&R time in the wastes after some undocumented psychotic blunder or another.[289]
  • August: Melchior is captured by an Enclave patrol and becomes part of the slave excavation force at Mariposa.[290]
  • September: Enclave construction crews and super mutant slaves begin excavations. They uncover the FEV, and mutations begin to occur in the human workers. Frank Horrigan comes into contact with the FEV and is sent to the Enclave labs for study.[291]
  • October: Melchior begins to mutate, but keeps his intelligence and cunning in the wake of the transformation, making him smarter than your average super mutant. Realizing that the Enclave will kill the super mutants after they get the FEV data, he begins to use his magician talents to hide away weapons for the mutants to defend themselves when the Enclave decides to dispense with them.[292]
  • 2236-2238: Horrigan gradually mutates from exposure to FEV, gaining the physique and slow, stupid, single-mindedness of a super mutant. He is kept heavily sedated, operated on, and studied. He is conscious for only brief periods at a time, then quickly sedated after the bloodshed is over.[293]

2237[edit]

Agatha: "Not too much I'm afraid. It was fabricated way back in 1714 by a famous Italian craftsman named Antonio Stradivari. He had made a bunch of Stradivarius violins actually, and each one was individually named over time to identify them. They are regarded as the most outstanding instruments ever made... and no two sound alike they say. Incredible. Since the bombs fell laying waste to most of the world, it may be safe to say that this could be the last surviving violin of its kind."

  17. The Courier: "Tell me the whole story of Vikki and Vance."
Primm Slim: "Yahoo! I ain't had a chance to tell their tale in a mess of years. First things first: any bosh you've heard about Vikki and Vance being copycats ain't nothing but ill-tempered slander. Fact is, they begun their crime spree two days before Bonnie and Clyde robbed their first bank - so who was copying who? Now true, Vikki and Vance didn't exactly cut a wide swath of murder and bank robbery across the central U.S., like Bonnie and Clyde did. It was more like a narrow swath of shoplifting, check-cashing fraud, and gas pump driveoffs - but crime is crime! They drove reckless, too. Having lived by the gun - well, Vance owned one, anyway - it was only fitting that the duo of desperados would die by the gun. Perhaps it was fate itself that accidentally drove them into a crossfire between police and a gang of bank robbers in Plano, Texas. Or maybe they just didn't notice until it was too late. It's been said that Vikki would have tried to cash a bad check in that bank, had she lived. We'll never know for sure. All we know is that the crossfire tore the car and both occupants to pieces, and the police issued an official apology. You can put your eyes on the genuine Death Car just over yonder, and there's Vance's machine gun in the case next to it!"

Look here - a row of multi-colored plasma fuels! Careful, they may look safe to drink, but your stomach is the last place they should be. Why the difference in cylinder size? Refining our production methods has resulted in higher yields of fuel over time, that's why! To my right you can see a sample of some old "safety barrels" REPCONN once used to store radioactive waste. Perfectly safe. On my left is an example of a mountain of REPCONN safety barrels some legislators claim are poisoning our environment. Ridiculous. Behind me is our most recent rocket project, which we're keeping under our hats... until "launch," if you'll pardon the expression. And in front of me is a model - not actual size - of the launch dome we are using to send our rockets screeeeaming into orbit. Now these colorful fellows behind me are REPCONN's earliest... experiments in flight. Feel free to read the plaques and learn, Rocketeers!" Hesitates a bit at experiments, since each rocket was a disaster. "Now for the highlight of our tour! Even from there, we could see House's defensive rockets shooting down the incoming missiles. Everybody assumed he died in the War. Maybe he did. 178. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.42: "Super Mutants"
"The Super Mutants that infest the urban ruin of Washington D.C. originated in Vault 87. Those unlucky enough to have reserved space in Vault 87 soon found themselves forcefully taken to a secure part of the vault, where they were locked in airtight chambers and exposed to a concentrated form of the F.E.V. The Overseer and his security force had no real idea what to expect; they were simply following the "plan." When the exposed vault dwellers started transforming into Super Mutants, nearly the entire vault population had been exposed. Those who hadn't yet metamorphosed knew what was coming, and, well...it didn't end well for humanity.
The dwellers of Vault 87 were turned into Super Mutants in 2078, and have been a presence in the Capital Wasteland ever since. Most of those original Super Mutants have long since been killed. But whether it's because of the nature of the F.E.V. they were exposed to, or a simple underlying human instinct, the Super Mutants of the Capital Wasteland are obsessed with the preservation of their own species. Super Mutants are asexual and incapable of procreation, so their only way of reproducing is to kidnap other humans, drag them back to the Vault 87 chambers, and infect them with F.E.V. And so they have done, for nearly 200 years.
Super Mutant society is loosely hierarchical, with the weaker (most recently transformed) Super Mutants generally giving way to the stronger. The Super Mutant hierarchy, as defined by the Capital Wasteland contingent of the Brotherhood of Steel, is as follows: Grunt, Brute, Master, and Behemoth. Generally speaking, the Super Mutants of the Capital Wasteland get bigger, stronger, and dumber as they age. The Behemoths are so strong and savage that they’re the only thing feared by the other Super Mutants."

  223. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.42: "Vault Dwellers
Vault 101 was actually part of an unscrupulous social experiment. All of the other Vaults were intended to be opened at one point or another when the "all clear" signal was sent from Vault-Tec or the appropriate regulatory agency, and this indeed, did transpire, with almost universally horrific results. But Vault 101's secret plans were different: The doors were never scheduled to open. Ever. In fact, the Vault was supplied with just the type of equipment it would need to keep functioning indefinitely-like spare parts for the water processor. But this was just the beginning:
The true experiment was even more devious and cunning. Although Vault 101 was about testing the human condition when a Vault never opened, this was only the first part of the plan. The "actual" experiment went far beyond that, and a select few knew the true nature; that this was to test the role of the Overseer. While the Overseer was able to interact (and even visit) the outside world via radio transmissions, and a secret tunnel from his sealed office, the rest of the inhabitants faced a much more dismal future: As far as they knew, Vault 101 was never sent an "all clear" signal, and faked radio transmissions described a nuclear-ravaged world gone mad, with absolutely no hope of existence outside of a Vault. The radio transmissions were actually recorded before the bombs even fell, and in many cases described a world even more horrible than the reality of the nuclear wasteland. The Vault 101 Overseer, like his counterparts in the other Vaults, was actually a planted Vault-Tec operative whose job it was to control the experiment from the inside.
Aside from keeping up this ruse, the Overseer's other important role was to reinforce to the dwellers of Vault 101 that the outside world would never be habitable again, and that their only salvation was in the Vault. The Overseer prevented anyone from leaving the Vault, and made sure the Vault dwellers received their regular "transmission" from the outside world. People entered Vault 101 in 2077, just before the bombs fell.
The Overseer died of natural causes 50 years later (in 2127), at the age of 84, after grooming a subordinate to continue the clandestine plan. The new Overseer led his people according to the same isolationist doctrine preached by his predecessor, but also attempted to garner as many senior Vault Dwellers to become complicit in this plan as possible. By 2277, the descendants of the Overseer had an entire generation of Vault Dwellers who were playing along with this plan, keeping the secrets from their children.
The Overseer and his cronies continued to receive periodic information from the outside world, while those not in the know were told that things had gotten so bad that whoever was sending transmissions was no longer able to do so; reinforcing the thought that leaving the Vault was sheer suicide. The final piece of this grand experiment only truly began when the Vault Dwellers living in blissful ignorance finally realized the world outside could be accessed, and there was a possibility of life above ground. The experiment only really commenced when the Vault 101 door first opened, and a young dweller fled into the light."

2196 Tandi (Aradesh's daughter) is unanimously elected President by the NCR council. Her popularity is to prove enduring: she will continue to serve in office until her death in 2248, at the age of 103.
2242-2243 The events of Fallout 2 take place.
2248 President Tandi takes ill and dies at the age of 103. Her presidency has lasted 52 years. Vice-President Joanna Tibbett assumes office.
2253 President Tibbett is removed from office by a vote of no confidence following her "timid" response to the massacre of 38 NCR citizens at the hands of Mojave raiders. Her replacement, President Wendell Peterson, orders three battalions of NCR infantry into the Mojave.
2270 The extirpation of tribals in the area of present-day Bullhead City is complete. "The Pacification of the Mojave," as it comes to be known, makes General Aaron Kimball a national hero.
2272 The NCR's Mojave outpost is established.
2273 Aaron Kimball retires from the NCR military and runs for office as one of Hub's political representatives (or "governors," as Hub idiosyncratically calls them). Less than two months into his term, Wendell Peterson is voted out of office and Aaron Kimball becomes the NCR's next President.
2274 NCR forces move east and occupy Hoover Dam. The NCR reluctantly signs the Treaty of New Vegas recognizing Mr. House and his stewards, the Three Families, as the rightful owners of the Strip. The Strip opens for business.
2275 Camp McCarran is established as NCR Headquarters in the Mojave. Sporadic fighting begins with the Mojave Brotherhood of Steel. The NCR government withdraws official support from the Followers of the Apocalypse and founds The Office of Science and Industry.
2274 Hoover Dam restarts and the Strip blazes with light. The first trickle of privileged, curious NCR citizens visits the Strip.
2276 Conflict with the Brotherhood of Steel escalates, culminating in decisive victory at HELIOS One. The Mojave Brotherhood is considered "neutralized."
    2277 Fallout 3 begins.
2277 Legion forces under the command of the Malpais Legate fail to wrest control of Hoover Dam from the NCR. Despite heavy casualties, the NCR's victory is celebrated back home.
2278 Following the abduction and killing of four soldiers, NCR troops assault the Great Khans' settlement at Red Rock Canyon and massacre several dozen men, women, and children. This event goes unreported in NCR press.

The New California Republic was born from the remnants of the survivors of Vault 15 and the small walled community they founded, Shady Sands. Under the leadership of Aradesh, and with the assistance of the Vault Dweller (who saved Tandi, Aradesh's daughter and a future president of the NCR), the community prospered. Trade routes with other settlements allowed cultural exchange, and a movement to form a national entity gradually took root and won popular acceptance. In 2186, the town of Shady Sands changed its name to "New California Republic" and formed a trial council government to draft a constitution. Four more settlements joined the council, and in 2189 the NCR was voted into existence as a sprawling federation of five states: Shady Sands, Los Angeles, Maxson, Hub, and Dayglow.
By post-apocalyptic standards, the NCR is a paragon of economic success and good ethical character: political enfranchisement, rule of law, a reasonable degree of physical security, and a standard of living better than mere subsistence are daily realities for it's 700,000+ citizens. Currently, the NCR in a state of transition, with rapid economic growth and a sea change in political leadership endangering its grand humanitarian ideals. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Mojave, where the occupation of Hoover Dam has improved access to electricity and water, but at the cost of straining its budget and embroiling its armed forces in a morally corrosive imperialist project.
The NCR government's aim is to annex New Vegas as the republic's sixth state. While it already controls Hoover Dam, its treaty with Mr. House and the three families compels it to allot one-fifth of the dam's electrical and water production to local use free of charge. Adding injury to insult, the NCR is locked into protecting New Vegas from invasion by Caesar's legion even as it receives not one cap in tax revenue from the Strip's highly lucrative resort operations. NCR citizens in the Mojave have largely come here for economic reasons, whether as paid citizen soldiers or as prospectors and fortune-seekers."

We have crash landed north of a camp occupied by Super Mutants. We believe these to be remnants of the Master's army as encountered by the first Vault Dweller. Although the archives mentioned that some of these Super Mutants might actually be friendly, we found little to like about these ones, especially the chief.
The leader of this camp went by the name of Gammorin. We were set upon by his patrols soon after we pulled ourselves from the wreckage. Bound and gagged, the mutant guards dragged us back to their camp. Fully half of us had been killed by the crash, and now less than half of that survived the treatment of our mutant captors.
We were scheduled to be killed for the amusement of Gammorin. It was not hard to see that several of the Super-Mutants were unhappy with this. In fact, I was amazed to discover that they were not as savage as I had been previously lead to believe.
I challenged Gammorin to single unarmed combat. It was to the death. There could be no other outcome in my mind. If I die, it will in combat."

Before I had a chance to close his eyes, the menace was upon us! Metallic death machines entered the camp undetected by my sentries! By law, the NCR prohibits persecution and discrimination on the basis of gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or religious belief (so long as said religion does not advocate violence). Legal protection of Ghouls and other mutants was added in 2205, though enforcement of these rights has been spotty. For the most part, the NCR's practices live up to its ideals, but there has been some retrenchment since the death of President Tandi. Aaron Kimball's popularity was amplified by a reactionary undercurrent, especially among males, calling out a need for a "strong man" to lead the NCR forward. Of course, that's because Armitage is actually a robot, of the same class as the replicant they are searching for. Armitage has the same schedule as Zimmer; he sleeps in the same room and eats the same food—not because he has to, but because he's been programmed to replicate human behavior as closely as possible."

Rivet City's hard-nosed security chief, 35-year old Harkness is a good guy and a good friend, despite his demeanor. What he doesn't know is that he isn't even human; he's a sentient humanoid robot who escaped from his creators and had his mind wiped. Harkness is extremely fair-minded. He treats Hangar Deck citizens with the same regard as Upper Deck citizens. As a result, he is very well liked by the Hangar Deck residents."

  338. The Lone Wanderer: "What was the Scourge?"
Kodiak: "It was a Brotherhood operation. They marched in and swept the place clean. Most of the people there were half-mutated, cancerous, vile things. And these people... rape gangs, torture squads... it was pure chaos there. The Scourge is the best thing that could have happened to it. This was way back, before the Citadel was fortified. Part of the early recon after the Brotherhood first arrived in this area. One night, a squad of Brothers led by Paladin Lyons swept into the city from over Mount Wash, tearing apart anyone who stood against them. They were completely outnumbered. And still they razed that place to the ground."
    (Kodiak's dialogue)
  339. The Lone Wanderer: "What about the Brotherhood's history in this area?"
Elizabeth Jameson: "We first arrived in the Capital Wasteland in 2255. In those first couple of years, we discovered the Citadel, Super Mutants, and Project Purity! Ah, the purifier. What an undertaking. The work your father and his team did was... amazing. The Brotherhood helped protect them, you know. At least for a little while. But we were stretched thin as it was, even back then. We had to pull our forces out. When we did, the place was overrun. I imagine that's when your father left. I... I'm sorry, I wish things had turned out differently."

From the husk of the Pentagon I carved a grand Citadel! No easy task, my friend! Ah, but that was yesterday, when all we had to worry about was those damn Super Mutants. The Enclave, now... 344. The Lone Wanderer: "Why did you stop working on it? What happened?"
Madison Li: "You happened." Mildly annoyed. "It wasn't just you; we had more problems than we could handle already, but your birth is what finally pushed it over the edge. Your father decided that you were more important than everything we'd been working for, and he left. He left all of us. Once he was gone, the Brotherhood decided we weren't worth their time anymore. Without their protection, we had to abandon the purifier."
    (Madison Li's dialogue)
  345. The Lone Wanderer: "You knew my father?"
Cross: "I did. And you as well! Long ago, I helped guard the water purifier against the Super Mutant horde. When your father left, I escorted the two of you to Megaton. He was... a noble man. I was saddened to hear of his passing. But from what I've heard, he died with honor. He died for you. I only pray that my own death has such meaning."
    (Cross' dialogue)
  346. The Lone Wanderer: "So, you used to be in charge? How did you end up here?"
Horace Pinkerton: "That lasted until 'bout 18 years ago, when those ambitious backbiters like Li and her little team showed up. She came in with her big "Purity Project" pipe dream, and my whole staff started working with her, those traitors! She even took my seat on the council. By then, I was glad to leave it behind. But hell if I'm leaving the city I made great!"

  350. The Lone Wanderer: "Could I ask you about Rivet City's history?"

Now I'm on the council, and with my leadership, we're the strongest settlement in the Wastes! Bloated with self-importance Of course, a few of those dead-enders still stick around, but who'd want to leave?"
The Lone Wanderer: "Hasn't Rivet City been around for longer than twelve years?"
Bannon: "Well, yes, but it was hardly anyplace of importance until I arrived on the scene. That's all ancient history now. No one would ever care about it. If you insist on wasting your time on that, you could try that bartending old crone down below, Belle Bonny."

  358. The Courier: "Have you always been with the First Recon?"
Sterling: "Used to be a Ranger... one of the first they sent out east, back before we took the Dam. Observation and reconnaissance. We took the lay of the land, checked out the locals, and kept ourselves inconspicuous. Couple friends of mine were the first to scout the Dam. That was back in '73, if I recall. Lot of those Rangers are dead now. Vegas always chewed men up... it's just a little more literal, nowadays."
    (Sterling's dialogue)
  359. The Courier: "Why did you leave the Rangers?"
Sterling: "Well... that wasn't really a matter of choice. Got myself caught by Legionnaires, up near Malpais. They had themselves some fun with me... mangled my hands and feet pretty good. Wasn't much good with a pistol after that. Wasn't gonna be trekking across the waste on any more long scouts, either."
    (Sterling's dialogue)
  360. The Courier: "How did you manage to escape Malpais?"
Sterling: "Caesar's boys figured I wasn't going anywhere, after what they done to me. So they didn't bother tying me up. I crawled out of there on my elbows and knees. Must have looked a sight. Then I rolled down an embankment into the Colorado. Guess I had a mind to drown, rather than give Caesar's boys the satisfaction of killing me. But a couple Rangers happened to be watching from across the river. They jumped on in and pulled me out of there. Lucky break, they said."
    (Sterling's dialogue)
  361. The Courier: "What are your plans for New Vegas? Securitrons upgraded."
Robert House: "I've resurrected Vegas, spirit intact. What I need now is the ability to enforce my rightful claim. Not just against Caesar's Legion, by the way. In fact, the NCR is a more present and insidious threat."
The Courier: "How do you intend to enforce your claim on the city?"
Robert House: "To enforce, one must have force - a position of strength. Years ago, when I detected NCR scouts roaming the Mojave, I could tell from their uniforms that these were no mere tribesmen. I knew it was only a matter of time before an army appeared, to take control of the dam. And I knew my Securitrons wouldn't be enough to oppose them. And so I recruited the Three Families. Vegas belongs to me because I mustered enough strength to bring the NCR to the bargaining table."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  362. The Courier: "How long were you the head of the family?"
Benny: "Seven years. Took over three days after Mr. House introduced himself. Our chief at the time, mountain of a guy named Bingo, wanted to stay nomadic. I disagreed, so he challenged me to the knife. He looked so surprised when I stuck that knife in his neck. Thought he was so tough, but he was so slow. That's how I made chief. It's how things were back then."
    (Benny's dialogue)
  363. The Courier: "What was your relationship with Benny... back when he was breathing?"
Robert House: "Benny was the leader of the Chairmen for seven years, ever since I recruited the tribe. I considered him something of a protege."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  364. The Courier: "Why do you care whether Kimball lives or dies?"
Robert House: "I care because he is a known quantity - not the man so much as the political context he inhabits. Kimball rose to prominence as the "Hero of the Mojave" when he led a campaign of reprisals against tribals who dared to attack NCR citizens. Ordering the occupation of Hoover Dam was his first act of office. As water and electricity flowed to NCR cities, his popularity soared. Conversely, his failure to annex the Mojave these seven years, and the immense costs of occupying a foreign land, have eroded his popular support."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  365. The Courier: "Wasn't the NCR's army big enough to defeat your Securitrons and the Three Families?"
Robert House: "Indeed it was - and still is. But not without taking significant casualties. Would Kimball and Oliver have traded the lives of hundreds of soldiers for absolute control of Hoover Dam? Oh yes. They weren't afraid of me, they were afraid of Caesar - that attacking me would leave them vulnerable to a Legion offensive. And so they negotiated. Not out of the kindness of their hearts, as they try to make it seem. Because the calculus of power left no other choice."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  366. The Courier: "What were the terms of your treaty with the NCR?"
Robert House: "NCR forces were permitted to occupy Hoover Dam and establish a military base at McCarran Airport. Well, it used to be one. Not an airport anymore. They recognized my sovereignty over the Vegas Strip and agreed to supply electricity and water once their engineers repaired the dam. Written into the treaty were provisions that the NCR do nothing to prevent its soldiers and civilians from visiting the Strip. That's how I harnessed the NCR to my endeavor. Their occupation has been the engine of my growing economy."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  367. The Courier: "I'd like to know more about the NCR."
Dennis Crocker: "I can provide a quick history lesson, if that's what you're looking for. In 2274, President Kimball sent the NCR army into the Mojave in force, with the objective of occupying and repairing Hoover Dam. Rangers and army scouts had confirmed that the dam was basically unoccupied and could be restored to an operable condition. Upon arriving at the dam, however, they discovered that a large force of tribals and robots had occupied it. This was our introduction to the Three Families, the Securitrons, and, of course, Mr. House. Using his Securitrons as intermediaries, Mr. House called for parlay. He claimed his forces had occupied Hoover Dam in order to safeguard it for our arrival. And that he was ready to turn it over to us, so long as we could agree to terms. Those terms became the Treaty of New Vegas. The Treaty recognized Mr. House's sovereignty over the Strip and granted us rights to establish military bases at the Dam and McCarran Airport. The NCR is legally permitted to send 95% of the electricity produced by the dam to our home states. The remaining 5% goes to the Strip. The treaty actually makes it illegal for the NCR to prevent its citizens, or troops on furlough, from visiting the Strip. Once on the Strip, our citizens are subject to arrest - or punishment - by House's Securitrons, though that's a rare occurrence. Our troops enjoy a different status. It's illegal for the Securitrons to take action against them. Of course, it's also illegal for our troops to carry firearms on the Strip, so there isn't much trouble they can get into. Our military police does an adequate job of keeping the troops on furlough in line. I don't envy them that task. The embassy was established a few weeks after the Treaty was signed. Basically Mr. House handed us a dumpy little building he had no interest in renovating. I'm the third ambassador to hold this post. And the first, I think, to accept its limitations. My predecessors had ambitions of engineering the annexation of the Mojave. They thought they'd convince Mr. House to join up. I've never even spoken to the man - or whatever he is. Maybe the situation will change once we've beaten the Legion once and for all."
    The Courier: "Go on."
Dennis Crocker: "Now we mostly just keep track of the NCR citizens and troopers around and make sure they don't get in trouble, but that's Captain Pappas' job. I keep myself busy with paperwork and reports that get sent back to the NCR. It's mostly busy work, but every once in awhile, we make progress."
    (Dennis Crocker's dialogue)
  368. The Courier: "How did you get to be in charge of this place?"
Robert Joseph MacCready: "It's not that complex. Any kid can say they want to be mayor here. It's just that most don't want to bother with the responsibility of leading. Most of the time, they last until the kids get tired of them, then they get kicked out on their ass by the new mayor. One only lasted 5 minutes. Said with a bit of glee, since he was the one who kicked out the 5-minute mayor (Princess). Of course, I've kept this place going strong for three years. To most of these kids, that makes me Mayor For Fucking Life. Fine by me, I say."

  372. The Courier: "Where does New Vegas get all its electricity?"
Robert House: "Hoover Dam stating the obvious, of course. A hydroelectric dam? The NCR had it up and running at 50% capacity within a year of occupying the dam. By treaty, New Vegas receives 5% of its output - more than enough."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  373. The Lone Wanderer: "Tell me more about the Outcasts."
Bowditch: "It's a rather sad story, I'm afraid. Last year, some of our soldiers had grave disagreements with the decisions of Elder Lyons. Disagreements spiraled out of control, and there was a schism in the ranks. The loyal soldiers practically threw out the dissenters. Now they call themselves the Outcasts."
    (Bowditch's dialogue)
  374. Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide Collector's Edition p.42: "Freeside
Las Vegas wasn't heavily damaged during the Great War, but people didn't immediately "settle" into the remnants of the old city. The various Vault tribes that emerged years later, hunted and fought among the ruins, but it was not until the "return" of Mr. House that they ceased (most) of their hostilities. Mr House directed the tribes to use his sizable quantities of pre-war construction materials to build the crude (but effective) outer walls that separate The Strip and Freeside from the rest of New Vegas. While Mr. House valued the area around Fremont Street, he ultimately viewed it as secondary in importance to the Strip itself and he had a second, inner wall that separated the two areas. When NCR prospectors (and eventually the army) arrived in the region, people typically went straight for The Strip, leaving Freeside (as it had become known by locals) as an informal stopping point. Eventually Mr. House recognized that he could use Freeside as a filter for undesirables, and pulled his favored tribes and all Securitrons into the Strip, leaving Freeside to fend for itself.
In the two years that followed, Freeside has slowly degenerated into a hostile, lawless den of ne'er-do-wells. For a while, it was completely without order, but two power groups managed to come to an understanding about how the area needed to be maintained. The Kings, formed from the dispossessed remnants of unfortunate tribes, prevent all-out chaos from erupting, but do little to deal with the day-to-day nastiness that Freesiders inflict on each other. The Followers of the Apocalypse, no longer associated with the NCR, settled in the Old Mormon Fort. They receive some protection from the Kings in exchange for help with the community's basic needs (food, water, health services, and some education). Despite the oversight from the Kings and help from the Followers, the people in Freeside live in daily peril... from each other as well as outside forces."
(Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide faction profiles)
  375. The Courier: "Tell me about the Kings."
Gloria Van Graff: "Ah, the "rulers" of Freeside. The Kings are a bunch of boys who refuse to grow up, and this is their playground. Their leader seems different, though. The few times I've dealt with him I've been impressed despite myself. Unfortunately, he rarely acts. The Kings believe that everyone in Freeside can do whatever they want, provided they can back it up with force. Which suits us just fine. When we first arrived in Freeside, the Kings protested when we kicked out the original occupant of this establishment. When we reduced several of their members to glowing puddles of goo, their objections vanished. Since then, we've left each other alone."
    (Gloria Van Graff's dialogue)
  376. The Courier: "Yes, what is the task?"
Edgar Hardin: "Back when we were stationed at HELIOS, our scouts reported that a group was establishing itself in the area as a distributor of Pre-War weapons. Our Elder at the time, Elijah, was too concerned with getting HELIOS running and fending off the NCR, so he ordered us to leave them alone. It's time that we correct that oversight, and show this region that the Brotherhood is still a force to be reckoned with. I want you to visit these weapons dealers, this Van Graff family, and make an example of them. Leave no one alive. When the job is done, report back and I'll arrange for a team to clean up the site and retrieve the weapons."

I'll share these with the traders, and soon, everyone will know about the Wasteland Survival Guide! But now, the very first copy of our book goes to you. It wouldn't nearly as good without your input. You're the real Wasteland survival guru!"

Robert House: "Since 2278, I've lost five roaming Securitrons near Hidden Valley. I didn't receive any clear video of the incidents, but telemetry from the units destroyed indicates they were attacked with energy weapons. It's obvious that the Brotherhood has a base in Hidden Valley or thereabouts. Finding it won't be easy, but getting inside will be the real trick."

We shut the quarry down while we waited for the NCR to get us some more blasting sticks, but now the Deathclaws have shown up. The NCR's a no-show, and my men and I have got nothing to do but sit on our asses all day. It's damn frustrating."

Daniel, one of the other New Canaanites, has made many maps of the region. The bad news is that we can't help you right now. Not with everything that's going on."

Survivor of an attack, he says. Bad men after him, needs a place to hide. We figured he was just in shock, so we gave him a place to lie low. We didn't actually expect anyone to come after him."
