BLUF
The Freehold is the first dwarven nation in the Westlands. There are communities of dwarves in most large cities, but dwarves are alone among the elder races in their affinity for stone and the earth. They have enclaves and city states throughout the mountains of the west, but the Freehold is the first of dwarfkind to stake their claim to power outside the Verge. The country is really an alliance by marriage of the city of Hargrin, and the dwarves of the Voltirim Deep (a series of large towns and outposts). They quietly claimed power during the Wars of Succession and quickly struck up trade with Amacidia and Onea. They sent representatives to the Treaty of Three Swords and were recognized in the treaty as if by accident. Now the Freehold is the nexus of dwarves in the west. Although they are a famously stubborn and independent race, most of the Free Cities and outposts in the west look to the Freehold with pride.
