Talk:Temporal Surge (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
This is a very interesting idea, but quickly becomes very unbalanced if the party is even a little imbalanced.
Heck, even if you're all the same level this lets you throw out a cantrip to have a martial unleash an attack (or two!) that is almost invariably much more powerful than whatever damage cantrip you could muster instead. - Guy 18:05, 20 May 2022 (MDT)
- I think my change to this spell makes it much more balanced, especially since its a cantrip. Still, it might be a problem with abilities like that of Quickened Spell. Further balancing may be required. --Woahluigi (talk) 16:23, 23 September 2024 (MDT)
- I agree. Great work.
- There's definitely still overpowered exploits. Even just standing within 10 feet of someone with Sharpshooter makes this by far the most powerful cantrip in terms of damage, for example.
- In my own bias at least, anything that actually encourages player teamwork is worth bending the standards a bit. - Guy 02:16, 24 September 2024 (MDT)
- Just realized this spell is exploitable if the target has a 1/turn effect, like a rogue's sneak attack. However, I don't think a heavy nerf is warranted. I do have a few ideas for balancing, though:
- Make the timepiece have a decently high gp cost, somewhere between 50 and 100 gp. It's been done before in SRD (see Chromatic Orb (5e Spell)).
- Add in a second material component with a small gold cost, but that is consumed by the spell. For instance, 10 gp worth of powdered silver or powdered diamond ("Sands of Time").
- Making the spell have a small downside on the user. For instance, losing your reaction or bonus action, or losing half of your speed.
- Also, its really important that this spell in some way target more than one creature. As of right now, this spell combos with War Caster (5e Feat), effectively allowing you to turn a reaction into an allies' action. --Woahluigi (talk) 15:09, 25 September 2024 (MDT)
War Caster can only target one hostile creature. To make it even less ambiguous, you could change this spell's phrasing to affect "one friendly creature."
I think making this (at least) 1st-level spell instead of a cantrip would fix most concerns. A bit harsh, perhaps. - Guy 17:47, 25 September 2024 (MDT)
- I meant the version of war caster found in the 2024 Player's Handbook. I do agree, its too harsh to make this a 1st level spell. I have an idea for a change that I will implement soon, should fix the war caster issue and balance the spell bit more. --Woahluigi (talk) 13:36, 26 September 2024 (MDT)
- Alright I made the change, what do you think?
