Talk:Pyronite (5e Race)

Following up on the comment on my talk page, the issue with the fly speed is more the fact that this race already exceeds regular balance standards. Flying speed by itself, we can look to first party races like aarakocra and owlin for examples of how they are balanced. Flying eats up a lot of their budget, so they don't get a lot else. However, for pyronite, this flying speed is augmented by an additional clause where you can use an action to become a whirlwind "transporting you to an area of 30 feet that you can see." Since this doesn't provoke opportunity attacks, it sounds like a teleport, much like misty step which is a 2nd level spell. There is no limit on this use, which makes it extremely overpowered, even at the cost of an action. The last clause about "controlling the heat of the fire to the point of making it harmless to other creatures" is also not defined in how it works, like do you extinguish fires or something or make all possible fire spells not do damage? It's a very niche area where 5e mechanics do not go into, and so it is ill-defined.--Yanied (talk) 19:36, 3 April 2024 (MDT)

I see, I already have an idea in mind of how to solve the flying speed, it would become something like a wind step of the monks and with respect to control the heat of the fire I think I had written that it would be like the cantrip of "control flames", but it seems that I wrote it wrong, said and done I will fix the rest.--Mr. Knight 23:04, 3 April 2024

The change to the flying speed looks good!--Yanied (talk) 18:34, 4 April 2024 (MDT)

Thanks!! Glad to hear that, so the race no longer needs the maintenance tag? If something is still missing I'll be happy to fix it. --Mr. Knight 17:21, 6 April 2024

There is still a lot in this race that makes it much stronger than first party content.
  • It has an interesting weak ranged bonus action fire attack. I'd say consider just giving the race firebolt to save on wording issues.
  • Fire immunity and absorption is highly not recommended, as immunity is VERY strong and free damage absorption for healing and buffs is definitely way too strong. Consider cutting down to resistance. It may not be as faithful to source material, but heatblast is way too strong to be a base player race compared to first party content.
  • The bludgeoning damage in son of earth is really high and it also allows you to cast a 2nd level spell on top of that. Maybe consider just giving mold earth? Though, since this creature is largely fire, consider axing this trait altogether so it's not so loaded...
  • The unarmored defense is fine, coupled with the extreme climate. The wording needs help, however, with unarmored defense language and reference to environments.
  • The kamikaze AOO explosion is toned down so that's good. Given the other traits, this is still a buff, but if the other stuff is decreased in power, then we might have more room for this to stay.
  • The trait about contracting sickness is still a little weird, since it sounds like you change your damage type entirely if you have a disease... But it's also a niche situation so maybe that is fine.
Otherwise, there is a lot of wording that needs to be fixed and some traits can be simplified to help. The power level is slowly being reined down, which is good, though!--Yanied (talk) 19:30, 6 April 2024 (MDT)

Ok, I've already made the recommended changes, removing the immunity and hit point recovery by fire and I hope I've written well the defense without armor, so how do you like the changes?

Regarding the "unexpected reaction" feature, I took it from the episode "side effects" where the aliens are affected by ben's disease, causing this case of heatblast, their fire was exchanged for ice, so I wanted to give that detail, also I put it as an optional trait, it will be up to the Dm or the player if they want to use this trait.

also I saw your comment in Petrosapien (5e Race), I have made the respective changes, let me know if they are to your liking, also could you give your expert opinion to these 2 more races? Appoplexian (5e Race) and Vaxasauriano (5e Race) --Mr. Knight 12:32 April 8, 2024

Sure, I'll take a look. The changes made so far look pretty good for this race. I can clean up some of the wording about the nonmagical parts. For the resistance, you have two types, being fire and poison, which are extremely common, on top of two cantrips that can avoid being nullified by antimagic, and also the limited flight and self-explosion thing. I think you should pick either fire or poison and then this should be roughly within parameters for refining wording. Oh, also was the height and weight table removed on purpose for some reason?--Yanied (talk) 18:43, 8 April 2024 (MDT)

The non-magical parts have been removed, and sorry for the weight table, I thought it wasn't necessary, I had seen quite a few races that didn't have it and I thought it was optional, my bad, besides I removed the poison resistance leaving the fire resistance only, I added an extra benefit to "Son of Fire" is this within the balance margin? --Mr. Knight 11:26 April 9, 2024

Usually the RHW table is mandatory but I think people remove it... which is annoying to clean up. I've cleaned up wording and capitalization, moving excess traits down since thing has 10 traits and some of them are loaded. For now, I think the balance is ok. As a note, be sure to find the artist source for the art and include it!--Yanied (talk) 19:33, 9 April 2024 (MDT)

Great!!! thanks for everything Yanied, I'm glad that now Heatblast can be playable and within parameters, I will take note from now on with the other races I plan to create and fix the existing ones.

Regarding the image I was looking for the source and the creator from the beginning, but what I found was a Wallpaper page and did not say the creator, but I will change the image to another that if I know the author, but the other images with the petrosapien and apoplexian, have the author's mark written on the image, so I did not think it was necessary, but I'll fix it in a moment. Again, thanks for everything my friend! --Mr. Knight 21:39 April 9, 2024

I'm glad the race got fixed up. Thanks for adjusting everything and trying to source the image. Cheers and happy homebrewing --Yanied (talk) 19:43, 10 April 2024 (MDT)
