Slowed Confusion[edit]
In PSR, if you are Slowed your movement speed is halved. If you normally have a movement speed of 30, once you have spent half your movement to recover from being prone, would you have (30/2/2 = 7.5) 7 or 8 feet of movement left, or would you have (30/2 - 30/2 = 0) 0 feet of movement left? Or does the Slowed effect end when you are no longer Prone, so you would have 15 feet of movement left?
For me, the Slowed effect only makes sense if you can use your action while Prone to Dash, Dodge, or Hide. In virtually every instance you want to immediately use your movement to recover from being Prone so you can use your action, so having options to mitigate the Prone penalties while remaining Prone might be nifty for players who can think that far ahead. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 50.24.119.76 (talk). - Oh that's a good question. "While you are Prone, you are Slowed." So as soon as you're not Prone, you're no longer Slowed. You would have 15 feet left.
- This is of course based on 5e's prone's condition, so a lot is inherited from that. But now you've got me thinking more about it.
- While it isn't actually spelled out in this condition itself, I intended for weapons like crossbows (whenever I get around to writing those) to not suffer disadvantage while Prone. So while wielding a crossbow at range it could be advantageous to be Prone.
- "Spending half your speed" or "spending 5 feet of movement" to do things in 5e always bugged me a bit, partly because it can be confusing. I wonder if it would make more sense to have recovering-from-prone or drop-prone use your bonus action instead? - Guy 00:29, 15 March 2024 (MDT)
- Oh, that explains the attack advantage/disadvantage against you based on distance! If going prone is a strategic play rather than purely detrimental, then that changes a few things. Could going Prone behind half-cover give you 3/4 cover, and Prone behind 3/4 cover give you full cover?
- I'd say that dropping prone and recovering from being prone should only be a bonus action if you have some kind of proficiency, and maybe that could be restricted if you are Threatened (I've taken a peek at a few of your PSR rules) so you have to move away from the threatening creature to recover as a bonus action. Maybe if you have a certain proficiency you could help someone else recover from being prone as a bonus action as well - I think using Help already allows someone else to recover from being prone. It might also be fun for a drunken master-type to have a special attack or trick they can pull while prone.
- As far as whether to sacrifice movement or an action to recover from being Prone, could you have that be an option the player could choose? There may be instances where it is safer to run away, and more often than not players will want to start hacking away as soon as they can. Maybe if a creature attacks on the same turn they recover from being Prone, they attack without their proficiency bonus? Just trying to shake things up.
