Talk:College of Taiko (5e Subclass)

From D&D Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The intent of this College subclass is to bring the battlefield control using music to the bard class with some area effect, some of which is non-targetable since everyone is hearing the music. If you want to tweek this with rewording and clarifications, fine, but don't make it into something that it is not. --Jbbrower (talk)

Alright, you really don't seem to understand the changes. Let's go over them.
  1. "level 3" was changed to "3rd level", which is the proper format for that.
  2. Taiko Two Weapon Fighting was changed to just regular old Two Weapon Fighting, as to avoid weird jank. The dependency on weapon is needless and if a player really wants the "flavor" of Taiko they can just impose the restriction on themselves.
  3. The Beat of Battle simply underwent condensing. The restriction for it being stuck to their next roll could just be added.
  4. Kumi-Daiko was just turned into haste instead of haste wearing the skin of a buff telling you it was haste, and made it single target, as a nearly free 3rd level spell on everyone is a lot. I could see an argument for the multitarget, though.
Edit: I didn't see the fluff at the top, originally. Only the tiny bit about the fighting style was adjusted. The flavor text has not changed one bit.
A very large majority of these edits were simply formatting and wording. I really don't understand why you oppose this. --SwankyPants (talk) 18:10, 31 August 2021 (MDT)
You didn't even look at the cleaned version before commenting and reverting.
  1. Your "3rd level" change is fine
  2. The intent of changing the normal Two-weapon fighting was to allow the removal of the light weapon restriction only if using 2 identical one-handed weapons. These are to represent the taiko bachi. If someone wants to do this with 2 different weapons, they would just need to ensure that both were light weapons as normally required. This is slightly de-powering from what you said. The whole point of this IS the flavor of Taiko. If that isn't what you want then you should make your own college called something that doesn't include the word "Taiko" and leave this one alone.
  3. Your version of Beat of battle is very different from mine and Papa Slow-ying. Yours seems too powerful. My version uses 2 inspiration points to positively affect friends and negatively affect enemies but only for their NEXT roll for ability check, attack roll, or saving throw (Unlike normally granted inspiration die there is no choosing, no holding, and it always effects next roll) This is to slightly weaken the effect and to represent that when effecting a mass area that the bard's control over the inspiration is less. I could certainly remove the choice of friendly/enemy/both and just make it always all in the area.
  4. Your version of Kata Form is de-powered. I can totally see how 2 attachs, a cantrip, and bardic inspiration in one turn is too much. Your version seems reasonable. I liked the part in mine where the swords could satisfy semantic components of the spells. Do you have a better way to put it?
  5. The Kumi-Daiko Form was supposed to continue with this College's motif of larger area effect. To balance the AoE haste, I was proposing that it be concentration and effect everyone (friend and foe) int the 30 foot range. You are correct that it was verbally a haste spell, but I was attempting to put all the info in one spot. I could easily just link haste as you did. Also, I added a "remains in the area of effect" clause too. comments?

Haste on more than two creatures is a definite no (twinned spell only, so resource usage is a must for that), and inspiration points aren't a class feature. Inspiration is given by the DM, and a player can only have one inspiration at a time. 6th level feature (your add-on) is fulfilled by the war caster feat. Also, it's somatic components, not semantic. --Lavie (talk) 20:57, 31 August 2021 (MDT)

OK, maybe the haste is too much. I have a player using this to very interesting situations with players and foes moving in and out of the effect range. Also, really, you know I meant bardic inspiration. I know what Inspiration is, I have been DM'ing before you were even in diapers. I know the Kato Form feature is LIKE War Caster, but it is limited to use of this feature only while attacking and casting a cantrip, not for regular casting. Please can we make iterations on this and not just Undo revisions like a troll! (or two can troll at that game ;-) --Jbbrower (talk)
