Talk:Alraune (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Tested this out with a group of friends new to d&d, this build is great, I ran it with a homebrew class, and the sheer amount of plant mischief my said player made... Well it made me feel like I was a director on par with Roman Polanski. Cheers to the creator of this race, 6.5/8 in my book~ Cransiosis
- Thanks. Glad you've enjoyed it. —ConcealedLight (talk) 14:22, 21 May 2019 (MDT)
Grabbing Vines What kind of weapon attack does this count as and what type of damage does it do? It's not very specific.
Thorny Vines. What type of weapon attack does this count as and what type of damage does it do? It's quite vague.
Perfect Flower. So, if you are already proficient in the persuasion skill, you gain expertise in it. What do you mean by expertise? Does this mean that I add double my proficiency bonus to persuasion checks? Or do I permanently add +2 to my persuasion skill modifier? Again this is quite vague and needs some more detail before it can be complete. Frightened is not a damage type. The correct terminology would probably be, you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened. --Blackkirby73 (talk) 17:53, 4 May 2016 (MDT)
I have created a temporally, I hope, fix for this page here http://pastebin.com/pTqhcFBv I am not 100% convinced if I should edit it because the content was completely changed, or at least designed in way that I think the original author might have intended.
I would like people interested in this page to speak. (I also never changed the Suggested Characteristics section since I think that's a different guy doing it.) Berzul (talk) 04:10, 28 August 2016 (MDT)
- SgtLion, you need to explain how Honey Trap seems to appear as an incredibly powerful weapon. Is it the damage values or something? Berzul (talk) 10:51, 20 September 2016 (MDT)
- No worries, sorry to cause distress - On a bit of an edit rampage, so I didn't notice you were actively talking (Few editors do!). Thanks for bringing it up in the talk page! It's a little awkward for me, as I'm channeling the dispute of another person, I'll lay out what's been said to me, and please go ahead and disagree if it seems wrong:
- Natural weapon doing d10 acid damage is pretty strong to start with. When it also allows a powerful grapple action, which puts it far over natural attacks of other races, and even then, does yet more when the grapple is ended. This, on top of all the slew of other racial abilities, tips this race over a fair bit.
- As the side note: For the "The Alraune as a race were born from remains deceased human bodies that were long forgotten." sentence, this still doesn't read as actual english to me, I really can't work out what it's saying. Apologies if my revision didn't keep the meaning. --SgtLion (talk) 11:51, 20 September 2016 (MDT)
- Then I think I would consider a combination of 3 things, decreasing damage, removing after effect and making that only grapple would remain for that trait. I'm going to make a minor change now in that direction. I am also a little stuttered here and I will change some of the rules for it so it would be more 5E friendly. Berzul (talk) 12:28, 20 September 2016 (MDT)
- Those are some neat edits. I've gotta say thanks for addressing that. Hoping this article goes the way of Featured Article, because it does have good content. <3 -SgtLion (talk) 14:01, 6 October 2016 (MDT)
- Hey about "neat edits" I am not probably the first one to think about "natural weapons" in 5E. I know there is a spell that gives you natural weapons, without telling if it's a 2 handed, one handed, dual wield weapons, simply giving your Unarmed Strike a bonus damage. This is what I used in the revised version so I hope it is mechanically correct for 5E. Berzul (talk) 14:05, 6 October 2016 (MDT)

I removed the design disclaimer. The note was that it was for "1-to-1" campaigns, but clearly a single character of this race is not the equivalent of a full party. It is not far of being balanced for use in a normal game, there doesn't seem to be any rationale for having it otherwise. Marasmusine (talk) 11:11, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
Featured Article Nominee[edit]
This race has the potential to be a featured article. I am nominating this page as a featured article, with the reservation that it may need a little polishing work before it gets approved. This page needs to be supported, commented, or opposed from within our community, and double checked for conformation to featured article formatting and content standards by someone who will then let us know how well it meets these criteria. --Green Dragon (talk) 06:43, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- I saw your comment today on the Main Page GD and was considering nominating this one myself. GA also asked me to pull some races together for nomination since that is my forte apparently. ConcealedLight (talk) 07:43, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- A couple people on Discord expressed concerns that we wouldn't be able to use the current page image on the main page, since it's copyrighted. From my understanding that image is licensed under CC by-nc-nd 3.0, which means (disclaimer: IANAL) we can copy and redistribute the image in any medium or format so long as we A) give appropriate credit, B) don't use it for commercial purposes, and C) don't remix, transform, or build upon the work. From my understanding this means that we should be able to use the image? — Geodude671 (talk | contribs | email) . . 10:33, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- Under the featured article page there is an entry that states: "It has images and other media where they are appropriate to the subject, with succinct captions and acceptable copyright status. Externally hosted images need to be sourced, with adequate attribution to their authors. The images should be relevant and high quality thumbnails sized 300px, 600px, or 750px for very short horizontal images." So, I think that is a yes. ConcealedLight (talk) 17:54, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- Support — I've worked considerably on this race since I noticed it in Geodudes acclaimed needsbalance hell. It was a pretty blatant rip off of content for a rather questionable source of Japanese production that has an equally questionable fan base behind it, however, I saw some potential in it and worked to get it sorted to the best of my abilities at the time. I've communicated with some other users who have made their edits as well as myself. The only thing as per this comment I see that needs correction on the page is fixing some of the discrepencys in the lore for which I've asked another user who is quite skilled in that department to look at. ConcealedLight (talk) 20:00, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- Support — Imagine I'm pointing to ConcealedLight to indicate our 100% congruence of opinion. — Geodude671 (talk | contribs | email) . . 21:47, 20 January 2018 (MST)
- Comment — I removed the bit about druids, since it was incomprehensible. The Alraune's relationship with druids needs to be fleshed out, and added to their society. Feel free to post here what it should be, and I will add it onto this page if you cannot. --Green Dragon (talk) 23:34, 22 January 2018 (MST)
- Better now. --Green Dragon (talk) 09:39, 26 January 2018 (MST)
- Support — I have recently completely reworked / reworded a significant part of the lore, as per ConcealedLight 's request. Personally, I find that this page gives just enough information to build a character, fully flesh it out and start playing while simultaneously leaving enough to the imagination for the player to choose which path they wish to follow. The concept is unique enough in itself to get me interested in creating an alraune for myself. --ConcealedWife . 01:14, 24th of January 2018 (CET)
- Comment - As for Green Dragon's comment - I tried leaving some parts of the original lore intact, because I find it rude to just change everything as a whole. The part connected to the druids was unclear to me too and as such I have attempted to just leave that in as it was. I was planning on getting back to it later.
- It looks better. --Green Dragon (talk) 09:39, 26 January 2018 (MST)
Indefinite Page Protection?[edit]
Unless I missed something, I do not see why this page was indefinitely protected from non-admins. Could someone explain?--GamerAim (talk) 08:10, 8 September 2018 (MDT)
- I personally believe it is because the page is complete and a FA. Unless any changes actually need to be made, it seems more useful to just protect the page. --84.24.154.69 10:03, 8 September 2018 (MDT)
Rose Subrace Notes[edit]
So... For the Rose subrace, it says that it has an aphrodisiac and a nectar that comes from their mouth to knock people unconscious. Um... does the aphrodisiac make them kiss the Rose? Or is that separate? On a different note, those features do not specify if they have any kind of restrictions on them. All-in-all, besides the confusing and slightly odd parts, I enjoy this subrace thoroughly and will attempt to use it in the near future. Flamestarter (talk) 18:17, 1 October 2019 (MDT)Flamestarter
