Semi-False Appearance. The talus resembles an ordinary boulder, though it often has a distinctive "talus" shape. A creature that succeeds on a DC 15 Wisdom (Insight) check can see the boulder is a talus.

Immutable Form. The talus is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.

Crystalline Structure. The talus has a fragile crystalline structure either atop or on the rear of its body. If the crystalline structure is atop the talus, it is able to be damaged by ranged attacks, melee attacks with a reach of 10 feet, area effects that encompass the talus, as well as melee attacks made by creatures that have climbed onto the talus's body (DMG 271). A talus with its crystalline structure on its rear can be damaged by called shots from ranged attacks, melee attacks from creatures with advantage, whenever the creature is flanked, by area effects that encompass the talus, creatures that have successfully tumbled through the talus's space (DMG 272), as well as melee attacks made by creatures that have climbed onto the talus's body (DMG 271). The crystalline structure has immunity to poison and psychic damage, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks and vulnerability to thunder damage.

Destructible Arms. The talus has two arms. Each arm can be attacked (AC 20; 20 hp; immunity to poison and psychic damage, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks, vulnerability to thunder damage). Destroying an arm deals no damage to the talus.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The talus makes a fist attack for each arm it has. It can't make both attacks against the same target.

Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. This attack may not be used against creatures that have climbed onto the talus.

Lob. Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 60/120 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage. This attack may not be used against creatures that have climbed onto the talus. Hit or Miss: The talus loses an arm.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 31 (5d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage. This attack may not be used against creatures that have climbed onto the talus, but each creature that has climbed onto the talus must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) check opposed against the talus's Strength (Athletics) check or fall off the talus. Creatures have advantage on ability checks to climb onto the talus and called shots from ranged attacks against its crystalline structure until the start of the talus's next turn. Hit or Miss: If the talus has less than two arms, it gains an arm.

Rumble (Recharge 4-6). Each creature climbing on the talus takes 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) check opposed against the talus's Strength (Athletics) check or fall off the talus.

While a stone talus can easily be mistaken for a boulder, these creatures are usually content with slumbering in place until they feel as though a creature has disturbed their slumber either by walking into its territory or by mining it up. Ambitious hylians and gorons also sometimes specifically attack stone taluses to harvest the trove of precious resources which their bodies are made from.

Elemental Nature. A stone talus doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Variant: Talus Howdah

Some stone taluses are outfitted with fortresses on their backs. A stone talus with a howdah has the following trait.

Howdah. The talus carries a fort on its back. Up to nine Small creatures can ride in the fort without squeezing. To make a melee attack against a target within 5 feet of the talus, they must use spears or weapons with reach. Creatures in the fort have three-quarters cover against attacks and effects from outside it, as does the talus's crystalline structure if it is on top of the talus. If the talus dies, creatures in the fort are placed in unoccupied spaces within 5 feet of the talus.

The creatures on the talus typically use bows and other ranged weapons. They also will likely try to shove those that climb onto the talus. If multiple creatures are available, they will use the Help action to better the odds of removing the unwanted trespasser if one of them has a better modifier for the Strength (Athletics) check. If the howdah provides cover for the crystalline structure, increase the CR of the talus to 14 (11,500 XP).

Variant: Igneo Talus

An igneo talus is comprised of magmatic rock. Igneo taluses have immunity to fire damage and vulnerability to cold damage. When the igneo talus hits with a weapon attack or uses its Rumble, it deals an additional 11 (2d10) fire damage. An igneo talus has a CR of 14 (11,500 XP) and also has the following traits:

Heated Body. A creature that touches the talus or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 11 (2d10) fire damage.

Cold Susceptibility. If the talus takes cold damage, its body cools. While its body is cooled, the talus's Heated Body trait is suppressed and its slam deals no fire damage. At the start of each of the talus's turns while its body is cooled, roll a d6. On a 5 or higher, the talus heats up again.

Variant: Frost Talus

A frost talus is comprised of glacial rock. Frost taluses have immunity to cold damage and vulnerability to fire damage. When the frost talus hits with a weapon attack or uses its Rumble, it deals an additional 11 (2d10) cold damage. A frost talus has a CR of 14 (11,500 XP) and also has the following traits:

Frozen Body. A creature that touches the talus or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 11 (2d10) cold damage.

Fire Susceptibility. If the talus takes fire damage, its body thaws. While its body is thawed, the talus's Frozen Body trait is suppressed and its slam deals no cold damage. At the start of each of the talus's turns while its body is thawed, roll a d6. On a 5 or higher, the talus freezes again.
