Staphobia (5e Disease)
Staphobia[edit]
Forming macroscopic tendrils throughout the host body, the microbial staphobia causes mottled tissue necrosis as it feeds, during which the host suffers ravenous, uncontrollable hunger for any healthy flesh it can obtain. When a host body perishes, the staphobia may continue to puppeteer the corpse even after returning to its macroform, though these bodies lose much of their original functionality.
A creature can only contract this disease by being infected by a staphobia. Symptoms begin appearing immediately; every 24 hours that elapse, an infected creature must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) necrotic damage and gaining a level of exhaustion on a failed save, or taking half as much damage on a success.
Whenever an infected creature starts its turn with less than half its total hit points remaining, it must succeed on a Charisma saving throw with a DC equal to 12 + its current exhaustion level; on a failed save, the infected creature must use all its movement to move towards the nearest creature and, if possible, make an unarmed attack against it.
When the infected creature dies, the staphobia exits in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the body. If it chooses, the host body is revived as a zombie in the space of its corpse or in the nearest unoccupied space. The zombie is under the staphobia's control.
