Staff, very rare (requires attunement by a bard, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard)
Once attuned and wielded, this staff will often attempt to place itself between the wielder and whatever the wielder perceives as danger. This will not disrupt or advantage the wielder, but it is noticeable.
The staff has 20 charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC: shield (1 charge), absorb elements (1 charge), counterspell (3 charges + 1 spell level above 3rd), or banishment (4 charges).
When used for a counterspell the staff will know the right level to cast the counterspell, and will automatically spend the charges needed to block the spell.
The staff regains 1d8 + 2 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge not during a counterspell, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff dissolves into a shimmering band of force that covers the current owner, they are now protected as if they cast the shield spell. Once the spell ends, the staff is destroyed.
