Ponder Orb (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
3rd-level all (ritual) | |
Casting time: | 10 minutes, 5 minutes with 4 candles and 2 incense (cast time is total, taking ritual into account) |
---|---|
Range: | Self |
Components: | M (Magic Orb, not consumed) (if cast with incense and candles, incense is consumed) |
Duration: | as long as you Ponder, re-roll check every 20 minutes of pondering |
You sit down and stare into your magic orb, and ponder, watching and listening to what it has to show you, and thinking about what to do with the information it has shown you
This spell takes up a level 3 spell slot to be known but you do not need to have any level three spell slots available to cast, does not need to be prepared
When Pondering your magic orb you ask it to show you something(telepathically of course), if you do not then see below. Base DC for the orb showing you exactly what you want is 15, DC for it showing you something close to what you want is 10, DC for showing something that is not what you want but may be helpful is 5, below 5 the orb shows you something unhelpful, and a nat 1 shows you something completly unrelated, if a nat 20 is rolled it not only shows you what you want, but something that may be even more helpful. but the DM can feel free to change the DC depending on what the player wants to see. Only the person casting can see what the orb shows clearly When pondering and you do not chose what you want to see then your PC sits deep in thought, and for the next [pondering time x 4] amount of time you gain proficiency in one subject of your choosing. you can only use ponder the orb in this way a number of times equal to your number of level three spell slots total, proficiency goes away after you use Ponder Orb again even if there is time left
this is all schools as anyone of any school could do this, also, it's different from scry for a number of reasons
1. all you need is your orb, and only your orb, nothing else will do(as to fit the standard pondering the orb thing)
2. you could do this as long as you want, and not just 10 minutes
3. this has two functions, to see, and to gain a bonus, not just to see
4. different use cases, scry is mainly for listening in, to hear/see what another thing does, or no see and hear from a different location, while Ponder Orb is meant for revealing hints, secrets, and things that way be useful, EX: the party is in there room at a tavern, they are unable to find the hidden door to enter the castle, the wizard sits and ponders his orb, asking to to show them the hidden entrance, lets say the wizard rolls a 17, they are shown a brick in the east wall of the castle, slightly different from the rest. lets say they rolled a 11, they just see the east wall. lets say they rolled an 8, then they are shown a brick wall, not of the castle.
