Paladin Subclass

Native to Maztica, eagle knights are noble warriors blessed by Qotal, the Maztican god of the sky, freedom, and his greatest gift: pluma, the magic of feathers and air. They are career warriors, fighting during wartime where they serve as scouts and shock infantry, and guarding or teaching during peacetime.

Tenets of the Eagle Knight[edit]

Do No Harm. The mark of a true warrior is to capture their foe, not to kill them. Death should only be dealt in honor of the gods.
To Live is to Dance. Dance is a way of life for eagle knights; in celebration, ceremony, and even in warfare where their combat is as much art as function.
Praise Qotal. While deference to other gods can sometimes be a matter of survival, an eagle knight must put service to Qotal first and foremost. This includes regular cereal offerings and protecting nature, especially butterflies, ravens, and couatl.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

  • Divine Wings. As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity feature to sprout a pair of powerful wings. For 1 minute, you gain a flying speed of 30 feet, and you may beat your wings as a bonus action on each of your turns, forcing each creature within 10 feet of you to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 1d6 + your Strength modifier bludgeoning damage, and is knocked prone and pushed 10 feet away if its size category is smaller than your own.
  • Divine Dominance. As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity feature to cast counterspell or dispel magic without expending a spell slot. When cast in this way, the spell has a level equal to your proficiency bonus. If your proficiency bonus is below +3, you make the spell's ability check with disadvantage.
Eagle Warrior

At 3rd level, you master the dances of the eagle knights. While you are wearing hide armor, you gain a +1 bonus to your AC, and attack and damage rolls you make with a shortbow, spear, or maca. This bonus increases to +2 at 7th level, and +3 at 15th level.

Eagle Form

At 7th level, while under the effects of your Divine Wings Channel Divinity option, you take on parts of the appearance of a giant eagle. Your flying speed increases to 80 feet, you may cast the enlarge/reduce spell on yourself without expending a spell slot, and you gain a pair of talons which count as natural weapons that deal 2d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage on a hit.

Additionally, you can use your Channel Divinity a second time before needing to take a short or long rest.

Aura of Feathers

Starting at 7th level, you emit an aura of calming comfort. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened and being afflicted with madness while you are conscious.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Eagle Chief

At 15th level, while under the effects of your Divine Wings Channel Divinity option, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, and you do not provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach.

Additionally, you can use your Channel Divinity a third time before needing to take a short or long rest.

Chosen of Qotal

At 20th level, you have Qotal's direct attention. As a bonus action, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You have advantage on saving throws against spells and extreme temperatures (DMG pg. 109).
  • When you use your your Divine Wings Channel Divinity option, any creatures of your choice within 10 feet of you gain its benefits as if they were a 3rd level paladin with this Sacred Oath.
  • You may end this feature early as an action to regaining one use of your Channel Divinity feature.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a 5th-level spell slot to use it again.
