A loovar takes the form of a particularly large fish found in ocean depths, with a distinct violet-colored backside, blunt face, and pale underbelly. It is primarily a herbivore, with a diet consisting mostly of algae, though it resorts to a carnivorous diet when food is scarce. It is a meaty, albeit common catch among terrestrial fisherman. Aquatic races such as zora occasionally domesticate loovars as underwater beasts of burden and as a potential source of food, much as terrestrial races domesticate cattle.
