Howitzers bridge the gap between field guns and mortars, being capable of both direct and indirect artillery fire. Medium howitzers typically fire projectiles between 200mm and 300mm, and are typically the largest ground-portable howitzers, though some attempts have been made to transport heavy howitzers by rail. When used for indirect fire, the howitzer can hit targets behind cover.

Before it can be fired, the howitzer must be loaded and aimed. It takes two actions to load the weapon, two actions to aim it, and one action to fire it.

Direct Fire: Ranged Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, range 3/7 miles, one target. Hit: 220 (40d10) piercing damage. Hit or miss, each creature within 60 feet of the target must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 110 (20d10) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A howitzer has the Armor Piercing (-5) property.

Indirect Fire: Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, range 7/14 miles, one target. Hit: 220 (40d10) piercing damage. Hit or miss, each creature within 60 feet of the target must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 77 (14d10) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A howitzer has the Armor Piercing (-5) property.
