The mask of Egriori

Chaotic Neutral
Domains: Death

One of the members in the Court of Four Deeds, Egriori is an enigmatic deity who is sometimes abhorred even by those whom he is allied with. He does not really answer to any of the Four Deeds and acts of his own accord. Also known frequently as the Lizard Lord or the Iron Mask in Preius, he stands as a being who deals death in a wanton manner. In this setting, he replaces the images of Nerull and the reaper. Followers of his morbid and cultish churches uphold the following tenets:

  • Death comes only as a privilege to those who live: Undead, constructs, and creatures that are not truly "living" are considered beneath those of the true living, as they can best receive the blessings of death by Egriori. It is thus a known ritual among the high priests of Egriori's following to turn enemies and dissidents into undead or even constructs as punishment.
  • Flesh and bone rot, much as mountains do: While there are plenty of inorganic things in the world not affected by the common ideas of "death," there is nonetheless a commonality that even an unliving rock will erode with time. Thus, nothing of the natural world is permanent.
  • What was given can and will be taken away: Tying in with impermanence, Egriori's followers espouse detachment from all things, mental or physical, because death can come for all of it. Ideas can die just as well as a person does. It just takes longer. Thus, things like morals are not immutable and do not matter.

Heralds and Allies[edit]

While allied with the Four Deeds, Egriori is an infamous figure in that tenuous alliance. Not a major member of the Four Deeds, Egriori is largely left to his own devices and processes. Only Quthok is known to call on Egriori, and it is largely for when he seeks a sort of hitman for a job. But even the Hungering Trepidation does not command Egriori entirely. Quthok also interestingly rejects the notion of devouring Egriori's influences despite being a creature of endless hunger. Egriori, along with Ose and Hek, form a trio unofficially known as "The Three Caprices." The three of them are known to be wildcard deities that can inhibit even their own "allies."

Egriori's heralds consist of reptilians, usually lizards. There are rare instances where amphibians, like newts and salamanders, are used. They usually appear to be an ethereal bluish green color, much like that of ghosts. Seeing these usually means a death is not far behind,
