Do the Modifiers of Bows and arrows stack?[edit]

Sir Milo Teabag 20:50, 24 October 2007 (MDT)[edit]

Essentially, if I fire a +4 arrow from a +3 bow, is it +7, or +4, or +3?

from the SRD (Magic Weapons section):

The enhancement bonus from a ranged weapon does not stack with the enhancement bonus from ammunition. Only the higher of the two enhancement bonuses applies.

I think it would be a +5 arrow, since effectively the +3 bow aims at the enemy and the +4 arrow swerves towards it, but it is never possible to get a weapon with a modifier above +5.

Edit: I did not notice the quote from the SRD. +4 is probably correct.

Chainer 18:12, 11 January 2008 (MST)[edit]

No, it IS correct.

Affirmative, +4. Highest bonus applies.

Nonsense. Look here in the SRD.

What is best to do in my opinion is to have a +5 bow (with mods you like and can afford -- splitting if your DM allows it) and +1 arrows with different modifiers. You can have sets of arrows with different purposes (Bane arrows come to mind). I like SRD:Suppression and SRD:Psibane in games with heavy psionics. Fire away with your +5 split bane arrows (so they count as +7). That is 8 attacks with greater multishot at -1 to hit, +7 and +2d6 to damage (good with a scout ranger and the Swift hunter feat from complete scoundrel). Don't forget an SRD:Efficient Quiver!

This is what's so great about the Arcane Archer- a level 10 arcane archer can use a +1 Longbow of Multiple Spectacular carrier effects and +1 Arrows of MSCE and still have the +5 enhancement bonus.
