Ahuizotl are horrid creatures native to Maztica's rivers, where they sit just below the surface mimicking the voices of their victims crying for help. When a creature approaches, it uses its long tail to rip the target into the water, repeatedly biting and pummeling it until its prey drowns. Worst of all, it allows most of the disfigured corpse to float up to the surface after it has eaten its eyes, teeth, and fingernails.
An ahuizotl's typical appearance is thought to be its attempt to blend in, appearing as its approximation of a spider monkey, their faces too doglike, their fur too sleek, their muscles too large. It is only through truesight that their true form is seen: a great writhing mass of mouths and tongues, a trait often associated with the Far Realm, and one they share with jaguar lords. Unlike their potential cousins, however, they do not specifically hunt couatls, though this may simply be because knowing an ahuizotl's true form doesn't make its goal less attainable.
