Zodiac Signs (3.5e Variant Rule)
Zodiac Signs[edit]
There are two different types of Zodiac in today’s popular culture. The Western Zodiac and the Eastern Zodiac.
Using this variant you can gain benefits and drawbacks from either the month you are born, Western, or the year that you are born, Eastern, or both.
Western Zodiac[edit]
The table below lists the 12 different Western Zodiac signs and their qualities. It also lists their compatibilities with the other signs (the effect this has is listed below) and the month the sign is associated with. (The month is a simplified version of the real dates that the signs are associated with)
You may pick a sign from the table below or roll a d12 and consult the table below.
Qualities[edit]
Here is a list of the qualities and what their affects are on the character that possesses them. Each sign has one quality from the three categories, elemental, cross, and social.
Elemental[edit]
Fire: Fire represents one's desires and creative energies. The character gains Fast Healing 1 when below a quarter of their maximum hit points.
Earth: Earth represents one's material resources, environment and possessions. The character gains DR 1/-. This DR stacks with other sources of similar DR.
Air: Air represents the intellect and one's ability to reason and communicate. The character gains Tongues and Comprehend Languages as spell like abilities usable 1/day each. Caster level is equal to the characters character level.
Water: Water represents imagination, human feelings and one's ability to love and sustain. The character gains Command as a spell like ability useable 3/day. Will save DC 10 + 1/2 character level to negate.
Cross[edit]
Cardinal: Characters with this quality are associated with initiation and creativity. +2 to any one of these skills: any one Craft, any one Perform, or any one Profession. The choice is made at character creation and cannot be changed.
Fixed: Characters with this quality are associated with focus, powerful concentration, individuality and determination. +2 to any one of these skills: Concentration, any one Knowledge, or Spellcraft. The choice is made at character creation and cannot be changed.
Mutable:Characters with this quality are associated with resourcefulness, holism and adaptability. +2 to any one of these skills: Appraise, Gather Information, or Survival. The choice is made at character creation and cannot be changed.
Social[edit]
Personal: Characters with this quality are principally aware of and concerned with the self. The character gains a bonus to saves equal to the characters Cha score 1/day. This bonus lasts for 1 round and is used as a swift action.
Social: Characters with this quality are principally aware of and concerned with others, and sociality. The character can use the Lay on Hands supernatural ability as a Paladin but can only heal a total equal to the characters Cha score instead of level x Cha bonus per day.
Universal: Characters with this quality are principally aware of and concerned with humanity. The character gains the use of a 30 ft aura that when activated affects those in it as if by a Calm Emotions spell. Using this is a move action that can be active for a total number of rounds equal to the characters Cha score per day. The character may choose to divide this ability among multiple uses, and the character doesn’t have to use it all at once. Everyone in the aura is allowed a Will save to resist the effect with a DC 10 + 1/2 your character level. A creature who passes their save can not be affected by the same Calm Emotions effect for 24 hours.
Compatibility[edit]
The compatibility of the signs determines how the character interacts with others signs. There are two compatibility types positive and negative, positive gives bonuses and negative gives penalties.
There are 2 ways to go at using compatibility, one is the simple interactive method and then there is the more complex combat method. You can use one or both of the methods, at the DM decision.
Positive[edit]
A positive compatibility means that your abilities have a higher effect on those of the corresponding sign.
- Simple Method: You gain a bonus to interaction skills equal to half your character level against others of the appropriate sign. Interaction skills are Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, Gather Information, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Perform, Sense Motive, and Sleight of Hand, the DM may choose to change this list, by adding or removing skills.
- Complex Method: You gain a bonus 25% (or 1/4) to all dice rolled numerical effects against others of the appropriate sign. This means anything that you would gain a bonus on that you roll a die for that effect someone of the appropriate sign. Attacks, damage, and healing are all examples.
- Example: Talie, who is a Gemini, attacks Jok, who is a Libra, with a total attack bonus of +8 and rolled a 12, for a total of +20, she would gain an additional +5, since 5 is 25% (or 1/4) of 20, to this attack because Libra is of positive compatibility to Gemini.
- Now if she hit and rolled damage and dealt a total of 12 damage, she would add +3 to this damage as well, for a total of 15 damage.
- If she tried to heal her friend on the next round who is an Aquarius she would gain this bonus 25% on the amount of healing as well.
Negative[edit]
A negative compatibility means that your abilities have a lesser effect on those of the corresponding sign.
- Simple Method: You gain a penalty to interaction skills equal to half your character level against others of the appropriate sign. Interaction skills are Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, Gather Information, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Perform, Sense Motive, and Sleight of Hand, the DM may choose to change this list, by adding or removing skills.
- Complex Method: You gain a penalty 25% (or 1/4) to all dice rolled numerical effects against others of the appropriate sign. This means anything that you would gain a bonus on that you roll a die for that effects someone of the appropriate sign. Attacks, damage, and healing are all examples.
- Example: Talie, who is a Gemini, attacks Peter, who is a Virgo, with a total attack bonus of +8 and rolled a 12, for a total of +20, she would take a penalty of -5, since 5 is 25% (or 1/4) of 20, to this attack because Virgo is of negative compatibility to Gemini.
- Now if she hit and rolled damage and dealt a total of 12 damage, she would subtract -3 to this damage as well, for a total of 9 damage.
- If she tried to heal her friend on the next round who is an Pisces she would gain this penalty of 25% on the amount healing as well.
Ophiuchus[edit]
Ophiuchus is known as the 13th Zodiac sign. It is a very rare sign that has a greater effect on the character than the other signs. This sign should be used by the DM to create interesting NPCs and PCs for story purposes, but should be used sparingly. There is no specific month that the sign of Ophiuchus shows, it changes every year and is present for only 3 days during this time.
An ophiuchus gains the qualities listed on the table plus additional qualities listed below:
- SR equal to 5 + character level, Darkvision 30 ft., and one of the following immunities:
- Immunity to a single energy source of your choice, chosen from fire, cold, electricity, acid, or sonic.
- Immunity to all poisons.
- Immunity to all disease, including supernatural and magical diseases.
