Xan's Endless Agony
5th-level Necromancy
Casting time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a tear from a humanoid)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You channel unholy energy to sever the target’s soul from their body, subjecting them to horrific torment. Choose one creature that you can see within range. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 6d8 necrotic damage, or half as much damage on a successful save.

If the target is reduced to 0 hit points while under the effects of this spell, they do not die in the conventional sense. Instead, their soul is torn from their body and cast into an eternal plane of torment. Their body remains lifeless, but it does not decay or show signs of death. No spell short of Wish or Divine Intervention can restore the creature’s soul or bring them back to life. Any attempt to communicate with the soul through spells like Speak with Dead or Resurrection results in the caster experiencing vivid and horrifying visions of the target’s eternal suffering.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher the necrotic damage increases by 1d8 for each spell slot level above 5th.
