Steel. Common trade good (metal), 0.6 gp per kilogram. Steel is an alloy of iron and a small amount of carbon other materials to improve its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion. Steel of this nature is preferred for weapons and armor, especially chain and plate armors which rely specifically on the strength of steel to remain intact and protect the wearer. Forms of metal which could prove more useful, such as titanium, are prohibitively more expensive for most.
Typically only specialist craftsmen trade in steel, as most metalworkers refine their own steel from iron without relying on an intermediary. A kilogram of high-quality steel, usually cast in the shape of a bar or ingot, is worth about 0.6 gp. Such an ingot is a petty item.
