Origins of the Shrouded Forest[edit]

In the year 1d, a great rift formed in the south of the Centralian region of Beachblush (bleeding into the northernmost point of the Casanovan region), a canyon of unparalleled size was created, one which swallowed up nearly a third of the border between the two regions set up by the dictator of the time, Raul Santiago. Nobody knows exactly how it was created, but rumors of everything from a battle between the goddesses Nature and Disgust, to a curse on the land from witches have been thrown around. Regardless of how it was created though, the repressed people of the country saw a possible way of traveling between the two regions. Everyone from freedom fighters to smugglers tried to cross the chasm, and very few were able to succeed.

In the aftermath of this destruction, the canyon became overgrown with plant life, and while the ground remains torn up and segmented, it is now filled with all manner of flora and fauna, constantly shrouded in mist (hence the name), and contains many rare medicinal herbs for those brave enough to face the region. While there is no known society that resides in the area, aside from a small amount of hunting cabins and hermits, some historians have noted that the rare Sky Tieflings appeared at approximately the same time, although no official connection has ever been revealed.

The highway over the shrouded forest is called the bridge of faith, it takes a little more than a day and a half to cross the bridge by horse and carriage (there is a simple hostel halfway through run by the government, it costs 2 silver per person, and ID checks are common to try and spot criminals), if someone should choose to cross through the canyon itself, given the terrain, and the lack of pathways, assuming that the party doesn't get lost, it's more likely to take six to seven days by foot (the terrain is too rough to be traveled by horse and carriage, but individual horses are more likely to survive). If for some reason, one were to try and cross from left to right, it would take about fourteen to sixteen days by foot. Most of the forest remains uncharted and unknown, this added layer of uncertainty only makes it more dangerous.

The forest is a center of great mystery, it may possess latent magical powers, or simply be a largely untouched, verdant land where nature can thrive away from the influences of the intelligent races; rumors and stories abound of the location, but none can compare to the scale and mystery of the real thing.

Encounters in the Shrouded Forest[edit]

Should your party decide to venture into the Shrouded forest, these are some of the events that they might be able to run into:

Encounters
D12 Event
1 The party gets lost in the winding trees and shrubbery of the forest, and any compasses begin to point in the wrong direction.
2 The party turn around for a minute only to find that they've been split up, and have to find a way to find each other.
3 The group finds a small cabin, in which lives a Sky Tiefling. Roll the d12 again, on an odd number he is odd but friendly, on an even number he is odd but hostile/sinister.
4 The party see a flock of luminous white birds flying away from the center of the canyon through the forest's canopy, and wake up feeling inspired.
5 The party see a flock of luminous white birds flying towards the center of the canyon through the forest's canopy, and wake up feeling on edge.
6 A day of heavy rain makes the canyon near impossible to traverse; have your group make a DC15 survival check, on a success, the party travels half as far as they were hoping to, on a failure, they are unable to make any significant progress.
7 The persistent fog of the Shrouded Forest lets up significantly (though not completely), and the party's travel comes more easily to them, reducing the DC of any survival checks they have to make that day by an amount determined by the DM.
8 The party come across a group of forest critters dressed up in fancy clothes and sitting around a tea-table, the clothes are as if custom tailored to each animal, and the table is set up with food and still hot tea, though the animals themselves seem to possess intelligence average to their species.
9 A group of nomadic sky-tieflings come into contact with the party as they are on a hunt, and blame the party for alerting their prey (whether or not this is true), the party must try and smooth things over before any further escalation happens.
10 No major events happen that day, and the uncharacteristic silence of the forest is somewhat eerie.
11 No major events happen that day, and the uncharacteristic silence of the forest is somewhat calming.
12 A group of 2d6 wild animals run into and attack the party, but they seem to be running from something larger.
