The Compass of Worldly Desires (5e Equipment)

Wondrous item, very rare (Minor) (no)

A compass born from great desire, a tool to find what you wish for most. This object closely resembles an average silver pocket watch on its exterior, however upon successfully opening the watch the object reveals itself to have incomprehensible inner workings. The object's gear will fold its interior into a pillar which angles itself to the direction to the next step to achieving what their heart most desires.

Opening: Upon picking up the compass, provided the individual has an intelligence score of 5 or more, it will begin to vibrate as if gears are turning inside. Quickly after a sharp needle will pierce their hand and return back into the compass, after which the compass will release a chime. If said creature attempts to open the compare, the mechanisms within will unfold and function properly.

Using: Once the compass opens, it will point towards what their character's heart most desires, or what will get them closer to it. The compass receives this information upon piercing their hand. The compass leads in said direction without care for any potential dangers, where or not it is aware of them is yet to be seen.

Passing on the compass: The object must be willingly passed on from the individual who is in current possession of the object, the original user must say the passcode they set up when originally prompted for its use and give it permission to be used by the new owner. In the event of the character's demise, the contract is voided and can be used by the next sentient being. in the situation it is stolen or lost, the compass will activate its return protocol.

Return Protocol: If the compass finds itself outside of 1 mile of the contractor, it will unfurl multiple metal limbs and begin to seek out the individual. In this state, the compass has an 80ft movement speed and is considered diminutive in size. The Compass has an AC of 22, though hitting it will not cause damage, only cause it to temporarily be incapacitated for 1d4 hours.

If the compass is trapped, it is capable of using a small laser located at the top of the button to open it, which will allow it to free itself (albeit slowly) from most imprisonment.
